Sampling plan for Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) on cucumber Neotropical Entomology
Bacci,Leandro; Picanço,Marcelo C.; Moura,Marcelo F.; Semeão,Altair A.; Fernandes,Flávio L.; Morais,Elisangela G.F..
This work determines the best technique, sampling unit and the number of samples to compose a sampling plan for Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom) and Thrips palmi (Karny) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) on cucumber. The efficacy of three sampling techniques: leaf beating on a plastic tray, direct counting of insects on the lower leaf surface, and whole leaf collection in bags were compared in nine commercial cucumber crops using three sampling units (a leaf from a branch located in the apical, median or basal third of the canopy). The number of samples was determined based on the relative variance and the economic precision for the best technique and sampling unit. The direct counting of insects on the apical third of the plant canopy was the best sampling...

Distribuição espacial de Tenuipalpus heveae Baker (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) na cultura da seringueira Neotropical Entomology
Martins,Gustavo L M; Vieira,Marineide R; Barbosa,José C; Dini,Thiago A; Manzano,Anderson M; Alves,Bruno M S; Silva,Rodolfo M.
The objective of this work was to study the spatial distribution of Tenuipalpus heveae Baker in rubber tree plantations. The experimental area was located in Marinópolis, State of São Paulo, and corresponded to a total of 1,000 plants (clone RRIM 600) divided in 100 plots of ten plants each. A total of 16 samplings were conducted, approximately once every 10 days, between December 2007 and June 2008. On each date, samples were taken from two plants per plot, each sample corresponding to the top 30 cm of a branch randomly taken from the median region of the canopy of each plant. The number of T. heveae was evaluated on three leaflets randomly taken from each sample, using a 20x power pocket magnifying glass. The number of mites was evaluated in two areas of...

Spatial distribution of Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) in citrus orchards Scientia Agricola
Costa,Marilia Gregolin; Barbosa,José Carlos; Yamamoto,Pedro Takao; Leal,Renata Moreira.
The psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama is one of the most important pests of citrus, mainly because it is the vector of the bacterium that causes huanglongbing (HLB) or 'Greening' disease. To study the spatial distribution of nymphs and adults of this pest, an experiment was carried out in two 'Valencia' sweet orange orchards, four and 12 years of age, established in Matão, central area of São Paulo state, Brazil. The following dispersion indices were used to study pest aggregation in the citrus plants: variance/mean relationship (I), index of Morisita (Iδ), coefficient of Green (Cx), the <img border=0 width=16 height=16 src="../../../../../img/revistas/sa/v67n5/a08form10.gif" align=absmiddle>exponent of negative binomial distribution, common k...

Non-Parametric Statistical Methods and Data Transformations in Agricultural Pest Population Studies Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Cabrera Campos,Alcides; Guerra Bustillo,Caridad W; Herrera Villafranca,Magaly; Suris Campos,Moraima.
Analyzing data from agricultural pest populations regularly detects that they do not fulfill the theoretical requirements to implement classical ANOVA. Box-Cox transformations and nonparametric statistical methods are commonly used as alternatives to solve this problem. In this paper, we describe the results of applying these techniques to data from Thrips palmi Karny sampled in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plantations. The X² test was used for the goodness-of-fit of negative binomial distribution and as a test of independence to investigate the relationship between plant strata and insect stages. Seven data transformations were also applied to meet the requirements of classical ANOVA, which failed to eliminate the relationship between mean and variance....
