AN ASSESSMENT OF FISH COMMUNITIES ALONGA PIEDMONT RIVER RECEIVING ORGANIC POLLUTION(ACONQUIJA MOUNTAINS, ARGENTINA). Acta biol.Colomb.
FERNÁNDEZ,LUIS; BECHARA,JOSÉ A..
The relationships between fish assemblage structure and environmental variables along a pollution gradient in the Medina River were analyzed over a year in four sampling sites (S1-S4). The river flows in a mountain-plain transition and is affected by several small town wastewater and sugar cane industries effluents. Environmental variables were divided in two sets, hereafter named -pollution- and -natural-. The first set included water quality variables modified by anthropogenic activities such as D.O. (Dissolved Oxygen), C.O.D. (Chemical Demand Oxygen), and dissolved ion concentrations. Natural variables included altitude, position, and time of the year. The upstream site (S1) had the lowest species richness and C.P.U.E. (catchperunitofeffort). The number...

Teixeira,E.A.; Euler,A.C.C.; Faria,P.M.C.; Turra,E.M.; Luz,R.K.; Prado,S.A.; Takata,R.; Ribeiro,P.A.P.; Fontes,D.O.; Ribeiro,L.P.; Saliba,E.O.S..
Most studies in nutrition for the South American catfish (surubim) were limited to the initial phase of development. However, it is clear that performance and nutrient utilization can change during the life stages of a fish. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the performance and nutrient utilization in juveniles of surubim fed diets varying in protein and energy levels. Two experiments were performed to test different levels of energy and protein in formulated diets. In the first experiment, surubim juveniles (89.2±4.8g) were fed five diets containing different levels of energy (18.0, 18.8, 19.6, 20.5, 21.3 MJ/kg). In the second experiment, juveniles (170.03±3.35g) were fed five diets containing different levels of protein (360, 400, 440, 480 and...

Physical mapping of the 18S and 5S ribosomal genes in nine Characidae species (Teleostei, Characiformes) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Peres,Wellington Adriano Moreira; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos; Moreira Filho,Orlando.
Characidae is one of the largest fish families of the Neotropical region, and presenting a pronounced morphological variability, certainly does not constitute a monophyletic group. The cytogenetical data also show a large chromosomal variation and can provide important information for a better understanding of the relationships between the species of this group. 18S and 5S rDNA probes were used in the present study for the chromosomal mapping in different Characidae species from the São Francisco River (Astyanax lacustris, Astyanax scabripinnis, Hasemania nana, Piabina argentea, Orthospinus franciscensis, Serrapinnus heterodon, Serrapinnus piaba and Myleus micans) and Alto Paraná (Astyanax altiparanae) basins. Genetic diversity and population structure of bocachico Prochilodus magdalenae (Pisces, Prochilodontidae) in the Magdalena River basin and its tributaries, Colombia Genet. Mol. Biol.
Berdugo,Gilberto Orozco; Narváez Barandica,Juan C..
Prochilodus magdalenae is an endemic freshwater fish that occurs in the Magdalena, Sinú and Atrato hydrographic basins. It has an important economic role and is a food resource for the artisanal fishing communities. Its socioeconomic importance contrasts with the current status of its fisheries, where stocks are being depleted. Considering its importance and lack of information on its genetic structure, we used seven microsatellite markers to assess the genetic structure of wild populations of P. magdalenae. The genetic diversity was assessed and the population genetic structure was estimated through Fst, analysis of molecular variance and Bayesian analysis. A total of 290 alleles were found in all loci throughout all population. The high polymorphism...

The Digestive Function of Pseudoplatystoma punctifer Early Juveniles Is Differentially Modulated by Dietary Protein, Lipid and Carbohydrate Content and Their Ratios ArchiMer
Castro-ruiz, Diana; Andree, Karl B.; Solovyev, Mikhail M.; Fernández-méndez, Christian; García-dávila, Carmen; Cahu, Chantal; Gisbert, Enric; Darias, Maria J..
Pseudoplatystoma punctifer is an Amazonian catfish highly appreciated for its high flesh quality, size, and commercial value. Its aquaculture is pursued to satisfy the demands of an increasing population in the region. However, knowledge of the nutritional needs during the early life stages is necessary for improving growth and reducing the incidence of cannibalism, factors that limit the success of its commercial farming. This study aimed at evaluating the influence of four diets containing different protein and lipid levels (30:15, 30:10, 45:15, or 45:10 in %) in the digestive physiology and performance of early juveniles. The results showed that the dietary protein:lipid as well as carbohydrate levels and ratios influenced differently the whole-body...

Redescription of Hypostomus johnii, a senior synonym of Hypostomus eptingi (Siluriformes: Loricariidae), Northeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Ramos,Telton Pedro Anselmo; Zawadzki,Claudio Henrique; Ramos,Robson Tamar da Costa; Britski,Heraldo Antônio.
ABSTRACT Hypostomus johnii (Steindachner) was described from the rio Parnaíba basin in the state of Piauí and the rio São Francisco basin in the state of Bahia. Despite the good quality of the original description of H. johnii, it does not currently allow its distinction from congeners. Thus, H. johnii is redescribed based on the analysis of the types and several recently collected specimens. Recent collecting efforts of the rios Parnaíba and São Francisco basins resulted in specimens only being found in the rio Parnaíba basin. This raises doubts about whether H. johnii occurs in the rio São Francisco basin. The species is distinguished from its congeners by having a high number of teeth on the premaxilla and dentary (between 60-115); small to...

Reynolds shear-stress and velocity: positive biological response of neotropical fishes to hydraulic parameters in a vertical slot fishway Neotropical Ichthyology
Duarte,Bernardo Alan de Freitas; Ramos,Isabella Cristina Resende; Santos,Hersília de Andrade e.
The barriers created by dams can cause negative impacts to aquatic communities, and migratory fish species are directly affected. Fishways have been developed to allow the upstream passage of fishes through dams. In Brazil, after the implementation of environmental laws, these structures have been built based on European and American fishway designs. Studies have shown selectivity for different neotropical fishes in some Brazilian fishways, and the main challenge has been to promote upstream passage of a large number of diverse fish species. The patterns of flow circulation within the fish ladder may explain fish selectivity although few studies detail the fish response to hydraulic characteristics of fish ladder flow. This paper presents a laboratory...

Biology of growth of Hoplias aff. malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) in a shallow pampean lake (Argentina) Neotropical Ichthyology
Balboni,Leandro; Colautti,Dario César; Baigún,Claudio Rafael Mariano.
The trahira Hoplias aff. malabaricus is a top predator in pampean shallow lakes and is highly appreciated by recreational anglers and artisanal fishermen. Trahira growth from Yalca shallow lake was determined by lepidological analysis and age validated by marginal increment. When growth was fitted to the von Bertalanffy model, annual classes exhibited a bimodal pattern as a result of the presence of spring and summer annual cohorts associated with a three month spawning season, each period in turn showing different growth patterns. The trahira population-age structure at Yalca shallow lake showed a truncated profile with very low numbers of large adults and few individuals older than three to four years, thus producing an unbalanced length-structure...
