Efficient use of energies on crop production helps to achieve increased production and productivity as well as profitability and competitiveness of agricultural sustainability of rural communities. The study examined profitability and energy used of rice production under two different technologies in two States of Nigeria. Primary data through structured questionnaire and interview were administered to 265 rice farmers comprising 57 semi-mechanized (Group 1) and 208 traditional (Group 2) rice farmers in both States. Results revealed that the semi-mechanized had higher income ₦370998.2 ($2348.1) per ha compared to ₦307031.1 ($1943.2) per ha from traditional technology. Group 1 farmers produce a total energy output 54842.8 MJ ha-1 (3.7 tons) compared to... |

Energy partitioning and methane production by sheep fed silages of three commercially available sorghum hybrids (BRS 610, BR 700 and BRS 655) harvested at three maturation stages (milk, soft dough and floury) were evaluated in open circuit respiration chambers. A complete randomized design was used in a 3 × 3 (hybrids × maturity stages) factorial arrangement, and the means were compared by the Student-Newman-Keuls (SNK) test (P<0.05). The intake of dry matter, digestible dry matter, gross energy, digestible energy and metabolizable energy were not affected by maturation stage, but were influenced by hybrid. The net energy intake was influenced by maturity and sorghum genetics. The fecal output represented the main source of energy loss, as percentage of... |

Feeds for pigs can be attributed different energy values according to, first, the step considered in energy utilization (DE: digestible energy, ME: metabolizable energy and NE: net energy) and, second, the method used for estimation at each step. Reference methods for evaluating DE content are based on in vivo digestibility measurements; indirect estimates of DE values are obtained from in vitro methods or prediction equations based on chemical characteristics. Methods have also been proposed for estimating urinary energy (and gas energy to a smaller extent) in order to calculate ME content from DE value. The NE values originate from energy balance studies (slaughter methods or, more commonly, indirect calorimetry measurements in respiration chambers) and... |

The objective of this study was to determine the energy nutritional requirements for females of Nellore, Nellore × Angus and Nellore × Simmental fed on two levels of concentrate. Sixty heifers from three genetic groups were used: 20 Nellore, 20 Nellore × Angus and 20 Nellore × Simmental. Twelve belonged to the reference group (four of each genetic group) and were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment. Another 12 heifers (four of each genetic group) were fed on the maintenance level and 36 heifers (12 animals of each genetic group) were kept in feeding system ad libitum with 30 (six in each group) or 50% (six of each group) dry matter concentrate. Animals were randomly assigned to six treatments in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement (three genetic... |

The objective of this study was to estimate requirements of energy, protein and macrominerals of young Nellore/Holstein crossbreds bulls supplemented on pastures of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. Thirty-five young bulls, at 8.53±0.18 months of age and with initial body weight of 230.6±6.1 kg were used. Ten animals were slaughtered as reference, in different weight range, and the other animals were slaughtered at the end of the experimental period. For estimate of net energy requirements for weight, a regression equation between log of retained energy (RE) and log of empty body weight gain (EBWG) was constructed. Net requirements of Ca, P, Mg, Na and K were determined by the equation Y' = a.b.Xb-1, in which a and b represent the intercept and the coefficient... |

Study was conducted to evaluate the chemical composition of Protein Block (PB) I, II and concentrate. The result of chemical analysis were showed that the dry matter (DM) 94.54, 93.48 and 89.16 percent; crude protein (CP) 45.85, 41.41 and 15.41 percent; crude fiber (CF) 4.26, 1.90 and 3.36 percent; ash 25.38, 26.99 and 6.36 percent; and ether extract (EE) 8.58, 1.18 and 4.98 percent, respectively. Nutrients digestibility and energy contents were studied by gas production technique. The predication values of organic matter digestibility of protein block I, protein block II and concentrate residue were 84.56 ± 5.08, 75.41 ± 2.68 and 114.86 ± 0.89 percent, metabolizable energy (ME) 7.65 ± 1.30, 8.33 ± 1.61 and 9.89 ±1.19 MJ/kg and net energy for lactation... |
