Supporting the Constructive Use of Existing Hydrological Models in Participatory Settings: a Set of “Rules of the Game” Ecology and Society
Bots, Pieter W. G.; Delft University of Technology; Cemagref; p.w.g.bots@tudelft.nl; Bijlsma, Rianne; Deltares; r.m.bijlsma@utwente.nl; von Korff, Yorck; Lisode; yorck.von-korff@lisode.com; Van der Fluit, Nicolien; Buro Natuur+Water; info@buronatuurpluswater.nl; Wolters, Henk; Deltares; henk.wolters@deltares.nl.
When hydrological models are used in support of water management decisions, stakeholders often contest these models because they perceive certain aspects to be inadequately addressed. A strongly contested model may be abandoned completely, even when stakeholders could potentially agree on the validity of part of the information it can produce. The development of a new model is costly, and the results may be contested again. We consider how existing hydrological models can be used in a policy process so as to benefit from both hydrological knowledge and the perspectives and local knowledge of stakeholders. We define a code of conduct as a set of “rules of the game” that we base on a case study of developing a water management plan for a...

Een margriet is een margriet is ... Naturalis
Haveman, R..
In the Netherlands, usually only one Leucanthemum species is recognised, L. vulgare Lam. Recent field observations suggest that the Leucanthemum species that occurs abundantly in the Netherlands is the tetraploid species L. ircutianum DC instead. A few Dutch specimens in the herbarium collection of Naturalis in L, however, have been identified as belonging to the 'true' diploid L. vulgare. The latter seems to be rare in the Netherlands, and might be confined to a few relict populations.

Marine fauna of hard substrata of the Cleaver bank and Dogger bank Naturalis
Schrieken, N.; Gittenberger, A.; Coolen, J.W.P.; Lengkeek, W..
As most of the sea bottom in the Dutch part of the North Sea consists of sand, marine fauna that live in association with hard substrates are rarely monitored. We report here on the results of a species inventory in June 2011 done by scuba-diving while focusing on a wreck on the Dogger Bank and on rocky bottoms on the Cleaver Bank. This resulted in various new records of species for the Dutch part of the North Sea. This result appeared for a large part linked to the added value of monitoring with scuba-divers. It is therefore concluded that scuba-divers should be used in addition to the more traditional monitoring methods in which dredges and grabs are used, if one aims at getting an accurate view of the biodiversity present in marine regions like the...

New and interesting Microlepidoptera from the Netherlands, mainly in 1984. The following species are recorded here for the first time from the Netherlands: Trifucula maxima Klimesch, Leucospilapteryx omissella (Stainton), Argyresthia (Blastotere) trifasciata (Staudinger) , Teleiodes wagae (Nowicki), Chionodes tragicella (Heyden), Gelechia muscosella Zeller, Epinotia thapsiana (Zeller) and Celypha rosaceana (Schläger). Monochroa niphognatha Gozmány has also been recorded for the first time, but was misidentified previously in our country as M. tetragonella Stainton. The fist authentic Dutch specimen of the latter species is recorded her now. Bucculatrix antispilella Spuler is removed from the Dutch list. The known distributions of five Tinaeidae in the...

Protosuberites denhartogi spec. nov., a new name for European ‘Prosuberites epiphytum’ (Demospongiae, Hadromerida) Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Kluijver, M.J. De.
The common NE Atlantic sponge species hitherto known under the name Prosuberites epiphytum (Lamarck, 1814), is differentiated from the South Australian type and other regional specimens. Spicule size and form, although generally similar, are subtly different. Australian P. epiphytum apparently persistently overgrow the thallus of algae, possibly as part of a symbiotic association, and this is not known for European specimens. In view of these facts and taking into account the disjunct distribution, it is proposed to assign the NE Atlantic populations to a new species. The genus Prosuberites has been restricted recently to species with single long tylostyles with heads embedded in a basal spongin plate, and both P. epiphytum and the new species do not...

Sensitivities of marine macrozoobenthos to environmental pressures in the Netherlands Naturalis
Gittenberger, A.; Loon, W.M.G.M. van.
The relative sensitivities of 309 common invertebrate species in Dutch marine waters are presented for environmental and anthropogenic pressures like organic enrichment, sedimentation and fisheries. The species were furthermore appointed to trophic groups like suspension and deposit feeders. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment uses these data when calculating the Benthic Ecosystem Quality Index 2 and the Infaunal Trophic Index. These metrics aid in the mandatory monitoring of ecological quality for example for the European Water Framework Directive. The common Dutch species were selected based on their abundance according to, 1. the mwtl dataset including results of on-going monitoring programs issued by the Ministry, 2. the...

Benthic communities on hard substrates within the first Dutch offshore wind farm (OWEZ) Naturalis
Bouma, S.; Lengkeek, W..
Five years after the commissioning of the offshore wind farm Egmond aan Zee, the monopiles and the rocks of the scour protection layers were covered by a wide variety of marine organisms. This paper describes the results of qualitative and quantitative assessments carried out in 2008 and 2011. The assessments were based on video footage, pictures and samples collected by divers at three different wind turbines. The ecological relevance of identified taxa is also discussed.

The exotic jellyfish Blackfordia virginica introduced into the Netherlands (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) Naturalis
Faasse, M.A.; Melchers, M..
In August 2014 the exotic jellyfish Blackfordia virginica was captured in the harbour of Amsterdam. This is the first confirmed record of this species in the Netherlands, although in October 2013 a possible specimen was filmed and released. This indicates that the species might be established in the Amsterdam area, although repeated introduction with ballast water cannot be ruled out. In September 2014 hydrozoan polyp colonies closely resembling those of B. virginica were collected near IJmuiden in the Noordzeekanaal, a canal connecting Amsterdam with the North Sea at IJmuiden.

Drastic changes in the amphipod fauna (Crustacea) of Dutch inland waters during the last 25 years Naturalis
Pinkster, Sjouk; Scheepmaker, Maarten; Platvoet, Dirk; Broodbakker, Nico.
After the introduction of Gammarus tigrinus in The Netherlands some 25 years ago and of other recently invading amphipods (Crangonyx pseudogracilis and Corophium curvispinum) the native species decreased, the invaders increased. The success of these invaders and its impact on the local amphipod fauna is discussed. Electrophoretic tests give evidence that a second invasion of Gammarus tigrinus, this time from Germany, is taking place. Some predictions about future developments are made.

Invasive crayfish in the Netherlands: a preliminary risk analysis. Naturalis
Soes, D.M.; Koese, B..
A total of ten crayfish species have been observed in the Netherlands: one native species (the Noble crayfish Astacus astacus) and nine invasive species. Six invasive species are established (narrow-clawed crayfish Astacus leptodactylus, signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus, spiny-cheek crayfish Orconectes limosus, virile crayfish Orconectes , white river crayfish Procambarus acutus and red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii), the status of one invasive species (marbled crayfish Procambarus sp.) is currently unclear. Two invasive species (the stone crayfish Austropotamobius torrentium and the redclaw Cherax quadricarinatus) have been recorded only once. The remarkable expansion of some of these invasive crayfish has raised questions about the possible...

Spatial and temporal distribution of caddisfly larvae in two lowland streams in The Netherlands (Trichoptera) Naturalis
Franken, R.J.M.; Klutman, A.G.M.; Tempelman, D..
Caddisflies are a species rich insect order. The adults are moth-like, but their wings bear hairs instead of scales. The larvae are aquatic and live in self-constructed cases, made of plant material, sand or debris. The species are used as indicators of water quality, but much is still not known about their biology and ecology. In this paper the preferred substrates and phenology of the larvae of 13 species are described, using the data of a survey of two lowland streams in the east of the Netherlands.

Nieuwe en interessante Microlepidoptera uit Nederland in het jaar 1999 (Lepidoptera) Naturalis
Huisman, K.J.; Koster, J.C.; Nieukerken, E.J. van; Ulenberg, S.A..
This is the twelfth compilation of interesting Microlepidoptera collected in The Netherlands, covering the year 1999. Cochylidia richteriana (Tortricidae) is recorded for the first time from The Netherlands: two females were swept from vegetation in the extreme south of the country. In 1999 Cameraria ohridella (Gracillariidae) appeared to be established in The Netherlands, we refer to its discovery. The following rare or interresting species are mentioned here: Ectoedemia quinquella (Nepticulidae), the second Dutch locality: the very rare Depressaria pulcherrimella (Depressariidae) was found in the province Zuid-Holland; a third locality of both Aristotelia subdecurtella and Monochroa arundinetella (Gelechiidae) for The Netherlands in the province of...

First record of a settled stomatopod Platysquilla eusebia in the North Sea (Malacostraca: Stomatopoda) Naturalis
Lewis, W.; Gittenberger, A..
This paper describes the discovery of a settled juvenile specimen of the stomatopod Platysquilla eusebia on the Dutch part of the Dogger Bank in the central North Sea. This is the northernmost record in Europe. The species is native to the Mediterranean and to the Atlantic coast from Portugal up to France. Further investigations have to show if the species already forms populations this far north. As the planktonic stages of P. eusebia have already been recorded in prior years, the establishment of the species should not be a problem, providing the circumstances are favourable.

Moss animals of the Dutch part of the North Sea and coastal waters of the Netherlands (Bryozoa) Naturalis
Faasse, M.A.; Moorsel, G.W.N.M. van; Tempelman, D..
Bryozoa or moss animals constitute a conspicuous and species-rich component of hardsubstrate benthic communities in marine and estuarine habitats. To gain insight into the biodiversity of these habitats, knowledge of bryozoan species is indispensable. Since the last comprehensive publication on Dutch species in 2004 much new information has become available. Particularly from the Dutch part of the Continental Flat of the North Sea, the largest natural area of the Netherlands, many new records have been collected. Other reasons to present an updated review are changes in nomenclature, the arrival of some exotic species and identification issues.

The scientific career of the zoologist Max Wilhelm Carl Weber (1852—1937) Naturalis
Pieters, Florence F.J.M.; Visser, Jaap de.
It is shown that the pinnacle of Max Weber’s scientific career was the organization and leadership of the Siboga Expedition to the former Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia) in the years 1899—1900. Before that time, as Professor of both General and Special Zoology at the University of Amsterdam, he had devoted his research mainly to the anatomy of mammals, which resulted in the fundamental reference work Die Säugetiere published in first edition in 1904. Just before his departure with the Siboga Expedition Weber was appointed Extraordinary Professor of Special Zoology in Amsterdam. This gave him more time to edit the results of the Siboga Expedition and for taxonomic studies, especially on the fishes of the Indo-Australian Archipelago. Nevertheless he...

Parastenocarididae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from The Netherlands Naturalis
Schminke, H.K.; Notenboom, J..
A survey of the groundwater fauna of The Netherlands has revealed the presence of 4 species of Parastenocarididae, viz. Parastenocaris fontinalis Schnitter & Chappuis, 1915, P. tumida Kiefer, 1961, P. germanica Kiefer, 1936, and P. nolli Kiefer, 1938, the latter two being new for The Netherlands. P. tumida is only imperfectly known, but there is enough material so that a full description can now be given not only of the female but also of the male hitherto unknown.

Changes in ranges of hoverflies in the Netherlands in the 20th century (Diptera: Syrphidae) Naturalis
Reemer, M.; Smit, J.T.; Steenis, W. van.
Changes in ranges of hoverflies in the Netherlands in the 20th century (Diptera: Syrphidae) In July 2001 the database of the Netherlands Syrphidae Recording Scheme contained approximately 200 000 records of Syrphidae. This database was used to examine changes in the hoverfly fauna of the Netherlands during the 20th century. The dataset was divided into two parts, before and since 1988, containing equal numbers of records. This revealed that there is a significant increase in the distribution of hoverfly species with saproxylic larvae. Probably this is a consequence of the changes in woodland management that have taken place in the past 20 years. Another result of the trend analysis is the conclusion that there is a high proportion of southern species...
