Pseudotumoral form of neuroschistosomiasis: report of three cases BJID
Andrade Filho,Antonio S.; Queiroz,Aristidez C.; Freire,Antonio C.C.; Lima,Leonardo Conrado S.; S. Filho,Celso A.; Amado,Isolda N.; Reis,Mittermeyer G.; Magalhães,Isis Fernandes; Carmo,Theomira M.A..
Central nervous system (CSN) involvement in schistosomiasis is an ectopic manifestation with a large variety of clinical forms, including pseudotumoral, which occurs in isolated cases and is rare. Three patients with epidemiological indications of this pathology were examined; the clinical picture included lower-back pain irradiating to lower limbs, associated with progressive flaccid paraparesis and sphincterial disturbances in cases in which the spinal chord was involved; while in cases with encephalitic impairment, headache, dizziness and cerebellar syndrome, characterized by dysarthria and right-side dysgraphia, were present. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a growing process in all cases; cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) characteristics and biological...

Histopathological and molecular characterization of encephalitic listeriosis in small ruminants from northern Paraná, Brazil BJM
Headley,Selwyn Arlington; Bodnar,Lívia; Fritzen,Juliana T.T.; Bronkhorst,Dalton Evert; Alfieri,Alice Fernandes; Okano,Werner; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Listeriosis is a disease primarily of ruminants caused by the Gram-positive bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Ruminants either demonstrate manifestations of the encephalitic, septicemic, or reproductive form of listeriosis. The pathological and molecular findings with encephalitic listeriosis in a 5.5-month-old, male, mixed-breed goat and a 3-year-old Texel-crossed sheep from northern Paraná, Brazil are described. Clinically, the kid demonstrated circling, lateral protrusion of the tongue, head tilt, and convulsions; the ewe presented ataxia, motor incoordination, and lateral decumbency. Brainstem dysfunctions were diagnosed clinically and listeriosis was suspected. Necropsy performed on both animals did not reveal remarkable gross lesions; significant...

Choroid plexus carcinoma in a cow Ciência Rural
Sant'Ana,Fabiano José Ferreira de; Gabriel,Adriane Loy; Kommers,Glaucia Denise; Barros,Claudio Severo Lombardo de.
A red, firm 3.5x3.0x3.0cm mass was found within the right lateral ventricle, compressing the hippocampus and thalamus of the brain of a 4-year-old cow. The pituitary was enlarged and firm. Histologically, both the brain and pituitary masses consisted of moderately pleomorphic epithelial cells arranged as rosettes or sheets supported by a delicate fibrovascular stroma. Based on anatomical localization, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings, a diagnosis of choroid plexus carcinoma with pituitary metastasis was made.
