Since the accession of the eight Central and Eastern European countries, farmers in these countries started to receive substantial agricultural subsidies. Agricultural subsidies alter farmer production incentives and thus factor demand and factor prices. Hence, agricultural support has an impact on land rents. This paper analyses the impact of the introduction of direct payments on land rents in the new member states and correlates econometrically land rental price data with support measures while controlling for other effects. The impact of direct payments on land rents is not only found to be statistically significant, but also economically important as 15% of the direct payments are capitalized in land rents in the new member states. |

Banking systems of the NMS are strongly linked to those of the EU15 Member States. Accession of NMS to EMU will likely to act, in the medium to long term, as a catalyst to strengthen already existing developments and trends in the banking systems of these countries. Further on, it is expected to put profitability under pressure and lead to increased geographical diversification and internationalisation, as well as to increased conglomeration and mergers and acquisitions. Overall, competition in banking within the euro area is likely to increase considerably after the NMS join EMU. When assessing any potential outcomes or... |

We analyze the effects of the 2004 CAP reform and EU enlargement on European and world agricultural markets. We compare the results from a CAP reform only and a CAP reform plus enlargement scenarios to a no-enlargement baseline implementing Agenda 2000 CAP policies. We utilize the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute's policy analysis model to simulate the effects of CAP reform and EU enlargement on production, consumption, and trade for the EU, its New Member States (NMS), and major players in world agricultural markets. The model is a partial-equilibrium model of world agricultural markets including important producer and consumer countries in world livestock and products, dairy, grains, oilseeds and products, cotton and sugar markets. Each... |
