ABSTRACT The Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (PNI) (Brazilian Southeast Region) was surveyed monthly for insect galls from February/2014 to December/ 2015. A total of 432 gall morphotypes were found. This number places the PNI as the richest Atlantic forest area in number of gall morphotypes. The galls were found on 47 plant families. Among them, Asteraceae were pointed out as the superhost. The gall richness in the lower part of the PNI is higher than that of the plateau. The insect galls were found in 154 native, 56 endemic and only one exotic plant species. Concerning the conservational status, the host plants include two vulnerable species with three morphotypes together. Several new botanical records were reported. Leaves were the most galled plant organ,...

Cerambycidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) of the Parque Natural Municipal de Porto Velho, Rondônia, Western Amazon, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Souza,Diego de Santana; Silva,Alexandre de Almeida e.
Cerambycidae is one of the largest families of beetles and it is estimated that there are about 25,000 species of longhorned beetles in the world. However, little is known about the distribution of many species in some regions, including the Amazon. The longhorned beetles are indispensable in the ecological chain, contributing mostly to the recycling of dead wood in forest. The present study is an inventory of the Cerambycidae of the Parque Natural Municipal de Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil. Insects were sampled from June 2008 to May 2009 using Malaise and light traps. A total of 61 species were identified, of which 33 are new records for Rondônia and one for Amazon region, i.e., Anisopodus melzeri Gilmour, 1965.

Barn Owl pellets (Aves: Tyto furcata) reveal a higher mammalian richness in the Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lemos,Hudson de Macedo; Silva,Carina Azevedo Oliveira; Patiu,Fabio de Mello; Gonçalves,Pablo Rodrigues.
The northern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro harbors the largest coastal sandy plains (restingas) of southeastern Brazil, severely threatened due to recent human occupation. In this context, mammal inventories becomes urgent to support biodiversity conservation and management policies. This paper aims to update the knowledge on the mammalian species richness of Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park by analyzing pellets of the Barn owl Tyto furcata. The analyses of 4745 mammalian bone fragments (1739 individuals) revealed the occurrence of 17 species belonging to the orders Rodentia (9 spp.), Didelphimorphia (2 spp.) and Chiroptera (6 spp.). The rodents Mus musculus and Cerradomys goytaca accounted for 77.2% of the total individuals preyed, suggesting...

First record of Melanoides tuberculatus (Müller, 1774) and Biomphalaria tenagophila (d´Orbigny, 1835) on Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Santos,Sonia Barbosa dos; Miyahira,Igor Christo; Lacerda,Luiz Eduardo Macedo de.
Small populations of Melanoides tuberculatus (Müller, 1774) and Biomphalaria tenagophila (d´Orbigny, 1835), were found at Vila do Abraão, being the first record of these species to Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro. They were probably introduced after 2004, perhaps following release from aquaria. The possible spread of these species to other freshwater habitats in the island, their effects on native snails and links with public health are discussed. The record of M. tuberculatus appears to be the first for a Brazilian insular area. The recent introduction of these species offers a remarkable opportunity to monitor introduced species and to understand the invasion process in an insular stream in southeastern Brazil.

New records confirming the occurrence of the ghost shrimps Biffarius biformis (Biffar, 1970) and B. fragilis (Biffar, 1971) (Decapoda, Callianassidae) in Brazil and the southwestern Atlantic Biota Neotropica
Botter-Carvalho,Mônica Lúcia; Carvalho,Paulo Vladmir Van Den Berg da Costa; Santos,Paulo Jorge Parreira dos.
Previous records of the callianassid ghost shrimps Biffarius biformis (Biffar, 1971) and Biffarius fragilis (Biffar, 1970) from Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, were considered as doubtful, because their original record (Carvalho et al. 1997) in a conference abstract cannot be considered as a valid publication. The original material examined by Carvalho et al. (1997) combined with the more recently collected material of B. biformis and B. fragilis, confirm the presence of these two species in Brazil and the southwestern Atlantic. Taxonomic and ecological remarks, as well as illustrations, are provided for both species.
