Impact of NGS in the medical sciences: genetic syndromes with an increased risk of developing cancer as an example of the use of new technologies Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lapunzina,Pablo; López,Rocío Ortiz; Rodríguez-Laguna,Lara; García-Miguel,Purificación; Martínez,Augusto Rojas; Martínez-Glez,Víctor.
The increased speed and decreasing cost of sequencing, along with an understanding of the clinical relevance of emerging information for patient management, has led to an explosion of potential applications in healthcare. Currently, SNP arrays and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies are relatively new techniques used to scan genomes for gains and losses, losses of heterozygosity (LOH), SNPs, and indel variants as well as to perform complete sequencing of a panel of candidate genes, the entire exome (whole exome sequencing) or even the whole genome. As a result, these new high-throughput technologies have facilitated progress in the understanding and diagnosis of genetic syndromes and cancers, two disorders traditionally considered to be separate...

Cattle breeding in Northern Australia: Revealing how consumers react to new technologies AgEcon
Pluske, Johanna M.; Burton, Michael P.; Rigby, Dan; Vercoe, Philip E..
In Australia, Bos taurus cattle breeds produce high quality meat, superior in taste and tenderness characteristics. Nevertheless, these breeds do not thrive in the Northern Australian environment. Stem cell transplant techniques could improve northern beef cattle breeding programs by facilitating crossbreeding via natural service. Focus groups were used in this study to explore consumer reaction to reproduction technologies and the implications for buying intentions. Findings suggested that consumers may react negatively to unconventional breeding technologies but the degree of this aversion is contingent upon how the technology is described. These findings are relevant for preparation of choice modeling surveys.

Enforcing Environmental Regulation: Implications of Remote Sensing Technology AgEcon
MacAuley, Molly K.; Brennan, Timothy J..
We review economic models of environmental protection and regulatory enforcement to highlight several attributes that are particularly likely to benefit from new enforcement technologies such as remote sensing using satellites in space. These attributes include the quantity and quality of information supplied by the new technologies; the accessibility of the information to regulators, regulatees, and third parties; the cost of the information; and whether the process of information collection can be concealed from the observer. Satellite remote sensing is likely to influence all of these attributes and in general, improve the efficacy of enforcement.

Makroökonomische Effekte von nachwachsenden Rohstoffen AgEcon
Nusser, Michael; Sheridan, Patrick; Walz, Rainer; Wydra, Sven; Seydel, Philipp.
The results of a current study point out the macroeconomic effects associated with the use and production of renewable resources (NAWARO) in Germany. It focuses on the direct and indirect employment effects in the NAWARO market segments biofuels, energy/electricity, chemical commodities and materials. Supply quantities of renewable resources and agricultural area in Germany required by the industrial production in the different market segments and associated employment effects in the German agricultural sector are also analyzed. Above all, if Germany succeeds to be a lead market in certain NAWARO market segments while retaining agricultural and industrial value chains in Germany considerable employment potentials emerge.

The Theoretical Structure of Producer Willingness to Pay Estimates AgEcon
Zapata, Samuel D.; Carpio, Carlos E..
This paper analyzes the theoretical underpinnings of producers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for novel inputs. In addition to conceptualizing the WTP function for producers, we derive its comparative statics and demonstrate the use of these properties to estimate input quantities demanded, outputs supplied, and price elasticities. We also discuss implications of the comparative statics results for the specification of empirical producer WTP models and survey design.

Old model, new problem: when should you update a model and what happens when you do? AgEcon
Griffith, Garry R.; Malcolm, Bill; Mounter, Stuart W.; Slattery, Henry.
This paper is a summary of some of the considerations involved in applying an existing model to a new problem, in particular in deciding whether to update or not, and some of the issues involved in interpreting the output from the new application. Thus where you start from does influence where you end up. Both change in total surplus and to a lesser extent the distribution of this change in total surplus across sectors, depends on the price and quantity data which is used to define the initial equilibrium, even if elasticity values are the same. So careful consideration should be given to whether an existing model should be updated because updating a model does matter. The final point to restate is that consumers of pig meat end up being the winners from...
