Business Organization and Coordination in Marketing Specialty Hogs: A Comparative Analysis of Two Firms from Iowa AgEcon
Hueth, Brent; Ibarburu, Maro A.; Kliebenstein, James B..
We study business organization and coordination of specialty-market hog production using a comparative analysis of two Iowa pork niche-marketing firms. We describe and analyze each firm's management of five key organizational challenges: planning and logistics, quality assurance, process verification and management of "credence attributes," business structure, and profit sharing. Although each firm is engaged in essentially the same activity, there are substantial differences across the two firms in the way production and marketing are coordinated. These differences are partly explained by the relative size and age of each firm, thus highlighting the importance of organizational evolution in agricultural markets, but are also partly the result of a formal...

Niche Agribusiness Supply Chains and the Channel Coordinator’s Role in their Creation and Management AgEcon
Patterson, Alastair; Martin, Sandra; Mollenkopf, Diane A..
The role of the channel coordinator and the structure of their supply chains are critical to the success of a supply chain that produces a product targeted at a specific market niche. Without the management of the channel coordinator, focussed on delivering a product with specific attributes to the target niche, the supply chain will be incapable of working in concert and creating a cohesive product offering. The supply chain structure is critical to this process. Although these two concepts are often mentioned in the supply chain and associated literature, and despite their importance, there is very little empirical evidence that shows the linkage between the channel coordinator and the supply chain structure. This paper is based on the analysis of five...

Marketing underutilized plant species for the benefit of the poor: a conceptual framework AgEcon
Gruere, Guillaume P.; Giuliani, Alessandra; Smale, Melinda.
Modern crop production is based on only a few plant species. Particularly in marginal environments of developing agricultural economies, many less well-known agricultural or non-timber forest species, continue to be grown, managed or collected, thus contributing to the livelihood of the poor and to agricultural biodiversity. Some of these species, called underutilized plant species, are characterized by the fact that they are locally in developing countries but globally rare, that scientific information and knowledge about them is scant, and that their current use is limited relative to their economic potential. In this paper, we first identify the economic factors that cause these plants to be ‘underutilized’. Based on this analysis, we propose a...

ORGANIZING A FRAGMENTED AND DISORGANIZED PRIVATE SECTOR – THE CREATION OF NON- TRADITIONAL AGRIBUSINESS CLUSTERS AND NICHE MARKETS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF CARIBBEAN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Amiel, Keith.
Some concerns relating to the demographics of the region as they impact on agricultural production were discussed. Traditional agriculture was in many instances on the decline. Competitive elements have been seizing the opportunity to supply the region through import substitution. Small and medium sized enterprises needed to be empowered by exposing them to state of the art technology and linking them into viable clusters, based on distinctive products, that could enhance their capacity to survive in increasingly globalized economies. This will necessitate both vertical and horizontal integration in the interest of arriving at viable economic entities to facilitate sustainable agri-business. The restructuring will require adjustments and infrastructure...

GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS AND PROPERTY RIGHTS: PROTECTING VALUE-ADDED AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS PARTICIPATION AgEcon
Babcock, Bruce A.; Clemens, Roxanne.
Since 1992, the European Union has protected high-quality agricultural products based on geographical origin using designations of geographical indications (GIs). U.S. producers and processors can obtain a type of trademark called a certification mark, which provides similar protections to that of GIs but protects products only within the United States. In the current round of the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations, the European Union and other countries are seeking to expand protection through GIs. If they achieve the full range of protection they are seeking, many U.S. producers and processors could no longer use many product names currently treated as generic (e.g., feta cheese). This article describes and contrasts three systems of protecting...
