A peridomestic population of the tsetse fly Glossina palpalis palpalis Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera: Glossinidae) at Kontagora town, Niger state, Nigeria Entomología
Ahmed,A. B..
The present article considers some aspects of a peridomestic population of the tsetse fly Glossina palpalis palpalis Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 in Kontagora, Nigeria. This situation characterizes an abnormal behaviour of the vector, and it is of significant epidemiological importance. Data on the ecology of this species were collected in 1995 and 1999. The results indicated that the species exists during both dry and wet seasons; approximately 30.0% of the catches were gorged with blood giving a MHS of 2.4, indicating a well-nourished population. Dissection of inseminated pars indicated pregnancy rates of approximately 30.0% and 70.0% in the dry and wet seasons and the presence of all 4 stages of pregnancy, suggesting that breeding occurs at both seasons....

Association Between Tongue Rolling and Tongue Folding in Osogbo, Southwestern Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Igbeneghu,Christopher; Olukanni,Folake; Olisekodiaka,Japhet; Adesina,Adekunle.
This study was carried out among 144 individuals (18 years) from the Yoruba tribe of Southwestern Nigeria in order to determine the association between tongue rolling and folding. Participants were examined for the ability to roll and/or fold their tongues. The incidence of tongue rollers and folders were 59.7 % and 79.2 % respectively. Tongue rolling was higher in females than male but the difference was not significant (X2= 1.039, df = 1, p= 0.308). Tongue folding was significantly higher in females than males (X2= 4.211, df= 1, p= 0.04). Of the 144 participants, 76 (52.8 %) were tongue rollers and folders, 10 (6.9 %) were rollers and non-folders, 38 (26.4 %) were non-rollers and folders and 20 (13.9 %) were non-rollers and non-folders. These classes did...

Nasal Indices among Bini Adolescents in Edo State, Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
Eboh,D. E. O.
Human nose occurs in many shapes and sizes and ethnic influences may result in different appearances of the nose. The classification of nose shapes can be based on nasal indices. This study was undertaken to determine the nasal indices of the Binis, between the ages of 12 and 15 years in order to classify the nose types. The study sample consisted of 200 subjects; 100 males and 100 females who were sampled purposively, from 14 secondary schools that were randomly selected. Nasal height and nasal width were measured in mm, using digital vernier caliper (Mitutoyo, Japan). The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using descriptive statistics and independent sample t test. P 0.05 is considered statistically significant. Descriptive statistics...

Unilateral Cryptorchidism in Nigerian Sahel Bucks International Journal of Morphology
Igbokwe,I. O; Grema,H. A; Ikpo,A. E; Mshelbwala,F. M; Igbokwe,N. A.
Out of 1608 Nigerian Sahel male goats (bucks) examined for cryptorchidism in an abattoir, 9 (0.6%) had right unilateral cryptorchidism. The coat colour-specific prevalence was highest among the brown bucks (2.1%); and was 0.8%, 0.6%, and 0.3% among black, white, back-and-white bucks, respectively. The condition was not found among bucks with brown-and-black, brown-and-white, and multiple coat colours. The right and left testes of normal bucks and the descended testes of cryptorchid bucks had comparable gross testicular measurements, but the retained cryptorchid testes were smaller in size. The estimates of the testicular measurements showed that testicular weights (with the entire epididymes), peripheral longitudinal lengths and mid-circumferences of the...

The Pattern of Arrangements and Distributions of the Superior Mesenteric Artery in a Nigerian Population International Journal of Morphology
Igiri,Oyono; Ekong,Moses Bassey; Egemba,Geoffrey Okechukwu; Asuquo,Olaitan Ruth.
This study was to ascertain the pattern of arrangements and distributions of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) in a Nigerian population. Seventy-five cadavers certified as Nigerians were obtained from the dissecting room of the Department of Anatomy, University of Calabar after ethical approval from the Institution's Ethics Committee. Their abdomens and their contents were excise to expose the vessels. Based on the pattern of arrangements of the SMA, the cadavers were grouped into three (A, B, and C). Group A had 45 cadavers and this constituted 60% which were similar to the commonly documented patterns. Groups B and C had 20 and 10 cadavers respectively constituting 26.7% and 13.3% pattern of arrangement, some of which have not been documented before....

Morphometric Study of the Eyeball of Three Breeds of Goats in Nigeria International Journal of Morphology
James Olukayode,Olopade; Hyelduku Danladi,Kwari; Isabella Onome,Agbashe; Silas Kalu,Onwuka.
A comparative study of ocular morphometry was done in goats in Nigeria using the three major breeds. The result showed that the circumferences (mediolateral and anteriorposterior) were fairly constant between the breeds. The mean relative eyeball weight ranged from (0.39 0.59) x 10-3. Asymmetry was observed between the right and left eyeball weights and circumferences in all breeds and there was disparity in the asymmetry. It was also observed that heavier eyeball weights did not always correspond to a wider circumference. Female WAD and RS goats had significantly heavier (p < 0.05) eyeball weights than the males but that was not the case in the Sahel breed. Animals above one year had consistently higher values in most of the parameters examined on...

Craniofacial Anthropometry in a Young Nigerian Population: the Canthal Distances International Journal of Morphology
Jaja,Blessing N.R; Fawehinmi,Hakeem B; Jack,Joy T.
The measurement of craniofacial parameters have clinical, forensic and anthropologic significance. Local data on inner canthal and outer canthal distances and the canthal index may reveal the pattern of differential growth in craniofacial features resulting from factors such as sex, diet and genetic distinctions. In the present study, we provide normative data on canthal distances in a Nigerian population which has not been studied previously, utilizing a study design which optimises the effect of age and minimise bias and confounding than previous studies in Nigerian groups. The mean inner canthal distance was 1.85±0.30cm and 2.07±0.29cm (males vs. females, p= 0.000); mean outer canthal distance, 10.39±0.56cm and 10.40±0.98cm (males vs. female, p= 0.899)....

Morphometric Differentiation of Two Nigerian Fish Species (Oreochromis niloticus and Lates niloticus) Using Principal Components and Discriminant Analysis International Journal of Morphology
Yakubu,A; Okunsebor,S. A.
Morphological differences between two close fish populations were investigated in Doma Dam, north central Nigeria using principal component and discriminant analyses. The purpose was to identify the two species correctly and assign them into distinct genetic groups. To achieve this, seven morphometric measurements (body weight, standard length, total length, head length, body depth, dorsal fin length and caudal fin length) were made on each of the studied 252 fish specimens (153 Oreochromis niloticus and 99 Lates niloticus). The analysis of variance showed that significantly (P<0.05) higher values were recorded for Lates niloticus in all the body traits examined, except dorsal fin length. From the principal component analysis, the differences between...

Correlation between annual activity patterns of venomous snakes and rural people in the Niger Delta, southern Nigeria J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Akani,Godfrey C; Ebere,Nwabueze; Franco,Daniel; Eniang,Edem A; Petrozzi,Fabio; Politano,Edoardo; Luiselli,Luca.
Background Venomous snakes are among the most serious health hazards for rural people in tropical regions of the world. Herein we compare the monthly activity patterns of eight venomous snake species (Elapidae and Viperidae) with those of rural people in the Niger Delta area of southern Nigeria, in order to identify the periods of highest potential risk for persons, and the human group actually at greater risk of snakebite. Results We documented that above-ground activity of all venomous snakes peaked in the wet season, and that high snake activity and high human activity were most highly correlated between April and August. In addition, we documented that women and teenagers were at relatively higher risk of encountering a venomous snake than adult males,...

Public health aspects of snakebite care in West Africa: perspectives from Nigeria J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Habib,Abdulrazaq G.
Snakebite envenoming is a major public health problem among rural communities of the Nigerian savanna. The saw-scaled or carpet viper (Echis ocellatus) and, to a lesser extent, the African cobras (Naja spp.) and puff adders (Bitis arietans) have proved to be the most important cause of mortality and morbidity. The main clinical features of E. ocellatus envenoming are systemic hemorrhage, incoagulable blood, shock, local swelling, bleeding and, occasionally, necrosis. Bites may be complicated by amputation, blindness, disability, disfigurement, mutilation, tissue destruction and psychological consequences. Antivenom remains the hallmark and mainstay of envenoming management while studies in Nigeria confirm its protection of over 80% against mortality from...

Large elapids and arboreality: the ecology of Jameson’s green mamba (Dendroaspis jamesoni) in an Afrotropical forested region Naturalis
Luiselli, Luca; Angelici, Francesco M.; Akani, Godfrey C..
Several aspects of the ecology of Jameson’s green mamba Dendroaspis jamesoni jamesoni (Traill, 1843), a large-sized arboreal elapid snake, are studied in southern Nigeria. This species 18 common and widespread in the region studied. On the basis of the analysis of both the habitats of capture of the various specimens and the results of a logistical regression model, it seems that this species inhabits a wide variety of habitats (including secondary forest patches and the plantation-forest mosaic), and that its local distribution is not influenced by the Presence of any macrohabitat parameter. Green mambas were observed both in the dry and in the wet season, without any statistical bias toward a particular season. Adult sex-ratio was aPproximately 1 : 1....

Seasonal activity patterns and diet divergence of three sympatric Afrotropical tortoise species (genus Kinixys) Naturalis
Luiselli, Luca.
Three species of hinge-back tortoises ( (Kinixys belliana nogueyi, Kinixys erosa, Kinixys homeana) are found in simpatry in the rainforests of the Niger Delta, southern Nigeria (west Africa). The seasonal activity patterns and food habits of these tortoises are studied in the present paper. K. erosa and K. homeana have similar activity patterns, with peaks occurring during the wet season. Kinixys belliana was found only during the wet months. There was no evidence of any specific effect of humidity of the air on their activity intensity, and it seems likely that, more than absolute values of air humidity, the crucial factor to force tortoises into high activity is the sudden change between dry days and very wet days at the onset of the rainy season (end of...

A META-ANALYSIS OF TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY IN NIGERIAN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Ogundari, Kolawole.
This study sheds light on how study specific-characteristics impact mean technical efficiency (MTE) in Nigerian agriculture. Also the paper extracts consensus message about MTE and its drivers in Nigerian agriculture based on studies covering the period 1999-2008. A meta-analysis using truncated regression was employed on a total of sixty four studies which yield eighty six observations for the econometric analysis. The regression results show that MTE in Nigerian agriculture increased significantly over the years. Study specific-characteristics such as sample size, number of inputs used as well as studies with focus on crop and livestock production were found to significantly impact MTE. Further analyses show that studies in the Northcentral, Southwest,...

Female Schooling, Non-Market Productivity, and Labor Market Participation in Nigeria AgEcon
Aromolaran, Adebayo B..
Economists have argued that increasing female schooling positively influences the labor supply of married women by inducing a faster rise in market productivity relative to non-market productivity. I use the Nigerian Labor Force Survey to investigate how own and husband’s schooling affect women’s labor market participation. I find that additional years of postsecondary education increases wage market participation probability by as much as 15.2%. A marginal increase in primary schooling has no effect on probability of wage employment, but could enhance participation rates in self-employment by about 5.40%. These effects are likely to be stronger when a woman is married to a more educated spouse. The results suggest that primary education is more productive...

Technological Innovation and Efficiency in the Nigerian Maize Sector: Parametric Stochastic and Non-parametic Distance Function Approaches AgEcon
Aye, Goodness C.; Mungatana, Eric D..
The current food crisis all over the globe has necessitated alternative policy actions by various stakeholders in almost all countries of the world. Consequently, efforts are focused on increased investment in agricultural research and development. The study evaluates impact of technological innovations on estimates of technical, allocative and cost efficiency from a parametric stochastic and non-parametric distance functions. Inefficiency effects are modelled in a second stage endogeniety-corrected Tobit regression model as a function of technological innovation and other policy variables. The results from both approaches show there is substantial technical, allocative and cost inefficiency in maize production and that analysis of technical, allocative...

Pricing and operational efficiencies in the livestock feed market in Ondo State, Nigeria AgEcon
Oguntade, Adegboyega E.; Mafimisebi, Taiwo Ejiola.
The Nigerian commercial poultry sector is dependent on commercial feeds. Evaluation of the operational and pricing efficiencies of poultry feed marketing is essential for improving efficiencies in the feed industry and lowering the price of poultry products. A multistage sampling technique was used to select the firms studied. Tools used to analyze data collected included index of pricing and operational efficiencies; and regression analysis. The firms studied handled about N251,870,000 of feed per annum, had an annual Inventory Carrying Cost (ICC) of N4,587,762 and an average ICC of N114,694 per firm. The Marketing Costs (MC) for all the firms was N16,813,860 per annum while the average MC was N420,347. Major contributors to ICC were storage; handling...

The Efficiency–-Equity Tradeoffs in Agricultural Research Priority Setting: The Potential Impacts of Agricultural Research on Economic Surplus and Poverty Reduction in Nigeria AgEcon
Alene, Arega D.; Manyong, Victor M.; Tollens, Eric; Abele, Steffen.
Public agricultural research has come under increasing pressure to redefine its strategic priorities to contribute to poverty alleviation goals. However, the issue of whether the poor benefit more from agricultural research that pursues efficiency or equity objectives remains unresolved, largely due to lack of empirical evidence on the nature and magnitude of the efficiency–equity tradeoffs. This paper estimates the potential impacts of agricultural research on economic surplus and poverty reduction in Nigeria, identifies strategic priorities according to both efficiency and equity criteria, and examines the nature and magnitude of the efficiency–equity tradeoffs. The results show that there are no significant efficiency–equity tradeoffs because the rural...
