Transmission Electron Microscopy of the Gastrointestinal Tract of Nile Perch Lates niloticus International Journal of Morphology
Namulawa,V. T; Kato,C. D; Nyatia,E; Rutaisire,J; Britz,P. J.
The ultrastructure of the gastrointestinal tract of Nile perch was described using Transmission Electron Microscopy standard procedures. Investigations revealed the presence of mucous cells, blood vessels and oil droplets plus several nerve cells and muscle bundles in the oral cavity. Further observations revealed columnar epithelial cells in the oesophagus, with a ragged surface, high electron dense cytoplasm, intercellular spaces, mitochondria and mucus granules. The lamina propria of the oesophagus was composed of loose connective tissue, blood vessels, nerve cells and several leucocytes, while the muscularis externa was composed of striated muscle bundles with the a Z line, A band and I band. The stomach was characterized by mucosal glandular cells...

Taxonomical and ecological description of a species complex of zooplanktivorous and insectivorous cichlids from Lake Victoria Naturalis
Oijen, M.J.P. van; Witte, F..
The zooplanktivorous Haplochromis tanaos spec. nov., and the morphologically very similar but insectivorous Haplochromis thereuterion spec. nov., from Lake Victoria (East Africa) are described and compared to Haplochromis diplotaenia Regan & Trewavas, 1928, a similar species which is known only from the holotype. Intraspecific variation is described for both new species. Ecological data of the new species are compared to those of known zooplanktivores and insectivores from the Mwanza Gulf area. Both new species disappeared concurrently with the Nile perch (Lates) upsurge early in the 1980's. The recent occurrence of individuals closely resembling the new species, in a different habitat close to the original one, is analysed.

Market-Driven International Fish Supply Chains: The Case of Nile Perch from Africa's Lake Victoria AgEcon
Thorpe, Andy; Bennett, Elizabeth.
This paper analyses the organisation of the post-harvest Nile perch supply chain centred on Lake Victoria in East Africa to test the practical relevance of the market-driven supply chain thesis proposed by Folkerts and Koehorst (1998). It finds that while international consumer demand, particularly in demanding improved quality standards according to HACCP principles, is having profound local organisational ramifications, the evolving supply chain is presently best characterised as being a hybrid one – neither exclusively production, nor marketdriven.

Nile perch demand in the Netherlands: are exports from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda source-differentiated? AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew.
This study examined Nile perch demand in the Netherlands and assessed the importance of country of origin as a determining factor. Import demand equations were estimated using the absolute price version of the Rotterdam model where Nile perch fillets were differentiated by product form (chilled and frozen) and by source country (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda). The Armington framework (source-differentiation) is often used when estimating import demand for a similar product from different sources; however, the results of this study indicated that country of origin is not a factor in the Netherlands when importing Nile perch. Results showed that the responsiveness of importers to price changes was the same regardless to the supplying country. Likelihood ratio...
