Nitrate: ammonium nutrition alleviates detrimental effects of salinity by enhancing photosystem II efficiency in sorghum plants AGRIAMBI
Miranda,Rafael de S.; Mesquita,Rosilene O.; Freitas,Natanael S.; Prisco,José T.; Gomes-Filho,Enéas.
ABSTRACT This study was carried out to evaluate if replacement of nitrate (NO3-) by ammonium (NH4+) in the growth medium prevents the damage in the photosystem II (PSII) efficiency and degradation of photosynthetic pigments caused by saline stress in sorghum plants. Sorghum bicolor plants were cultivated in nutrient solutions containing different NO3-:NH4+ ratios (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100) at a final concentration of 5.0 mM. Salinity was imposed by adding NaCl at 75 mM in the growth medium; and the analysis were performed after ten days of salt stress. The most striking effects of nitrogen regime were observed in plants supplied with equal amounts of NO3-: NH4+ (50:50). Under salt stress, 50:50-grown plants displayed an increase in the...

Growth and productive responses of tropical grass Panicum maximum to nitrate and ammonium supply R. Bras. Zootec.
Santos,Jorge Henrique da Silva; Bona,Fabiano Daniel De; Monteiro,Francisco Antonio.
This study was conducted to investigate growth response parameters and forage yield of Panicum maximum Jacq. plants supplied with nitrate (NO3-) and ammonium (NH4+) as N source in a nutrient solution. Six NO3- and NH4+ combinations were tested at the following proportions: 100-0, 85-15, 70-30, 55-45, 40-60 and 25-75%. Grass shoot (number of tillers and leaves and leaf surface area) and root (length and surface area) growth parameters and dry matter production exhibited highest values in P. maximum plants growing in the nutrient solution supplied with NO3-:NH4+ at the proportions ranging between approximately 70-30 and 55-45%. The use of NO3-:NH4+ mixture at the ratio of 55-45% instead of the NO3- solely as N source in the nutrient solution enhanced the...

Nitrogen use efficiency in modern wheat cultivars Bragantia
Todeschini,Matheus Henrique; Milioli,Anderson Simionato; Trevizan,Diego Maciel; Bornhofen,Elesandro; Finatto,Taciane; Storck,Lindolfo; Benin,Giovani.
ABSTRACT The nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is defined as the capacity of a given genotype in take advantage of the applied nitrogen (N) and transform it in biomass and grains. The objective of this study was to evaluate 12 wheat cultivars as to the NUE and its components. The experiment was conducted in a controlled environment, in a randomized block design with three replications. Twelve wheat cultivars were submitted to four N supply levels (0, 80, 160 and 240 kg of N∙ha–1). The data were submitted to analysis of variance, means multiple comparison, polynomial regression, and path analysis. The nitrogen remobilization efficiency (NRE) was the main NUE component of the evaluated cultivars, in both low and high conditions of nitrogen fertilization. In the...

Efficient production of lignocellulolytic enzymes xylanase, β-xylosidase, ferulic acid esterase and β-glucosidase by the mutant strain Aspergillus awamori 2B.361 U2/1 BJM
Gottschalk,Leda Maria Fortes; Paredes,Raquel de Sousa; Teixeira,Ricardo Sposina Sobral; Silva,Ayla Sant'Ana da; Bon,Elba Pinto da Silva.
The production of xylanase, β-xylosidase, ferulic acid esterase and β-glucosidase by Aspergillus awamori 2B.361 U2/1, a hyper producer of glucoamylase and pectinase, was evaluated using selected conditions regarding nitrogen nutrition. Submerged cultivations were carried out at 30 ºC and 200 rpm in growth media containing 30 g wheat bran/L as main carbon source and either yeast extract, ammonium sulfate, sodium nitrate or urea, as nitrogen sources; in all cases it was used a fixed molar carbon to molar nitrogen concentration of 10.3. The use of poor nitrogen sources favored the accumulation of xylanase, β-xylosidase and ferulic acid esterase to a peak concentrations of 44,880; 640 and 118 U/L, respectively, for sodium nitrate and of 34,580, 685 and 170...

Interrelationships between Grain Nitrogen Content and other Indicators of Nitrogen Accumulation and Utilization Efficiency in Wheat Plants Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Nikolic,Olivera; Zivanovic,Tomislav; Jelic,Miodrag; Djalovic,Ivica.
The topic of N wheat nutrition was prevalent during the last decades of the 20th century for many reasons such as energy crises, profitability of small grain production, and ecosystem protection and preservation. The objective of this study was to determine the interrelationships between wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grain N content and other indicators of N nutrition efficiency to better understand the N nutrition process in wheat plants. The experiment included 30 wheat cultivars and experimental lines from Serbia. Plant samples of each genotype were taken at anthesis and maturity. The following parameters related to N accumulation and translocation within the wheat plant were calculated: N content (at anthesis, grain, straw, and total at maturity), N...
