This paper provides a summary of recent results derived from satellite altimetry. It is focused on altimetry and ocean dynamics with synergistic use of other remote sensing techniques, in-situ data and integration aspects through data assimilation. Topics include mean ocean circulation and geoid issues, tropical dynamics and large-scale sea level and ocean circulation variability, high-frequency and intraseasonal variability, Rossby waves and mesoscale variability.

Sea surface height variations in the South China Sea from satellite altimetry 5

Sea surface elevation in the South China Sea is examined in the Topex/Poseidon altimeter data from 1992 to 1995. Sea level anomalies are smoothed along satellite tracks and in time with tidal errors reduced by harmonic analysis. The smoothed data are sampled every ten days with an along-track separation of about 40 km. The data reveal significant annual variations in sea level. In winter, low sea level is over the entire deep basin with two local lows centred off Luzon and the Sunda Shelf. In summer, sea level is high off Luzon and off the Sunda Shelf, and a low off Vietnam separates the two highs. Sea level variability in the central Red Sea 5

Analyses of the daily means of the sea level at Jeddah and Port Sudan for the year 1991 reveal that a large proportion (60%) of the energy is concentrated in the seasonal variations. The seasonal signal is approximated as the sum of an annual and semi-annual components. The amplitudes of the annual component are 20.3 and 12.7 cm respective! y and constitute about 44% of the total variance. The amplitudes of the semi-annual cycle are 9.6 cm and 7.7 cm and explain about 10% and 16% of the variance respcctively. At Jeddah cross-spectral anal ysis between the sea-level and the wind stress components shows that the annual cycle is mainly induced by the long-shore component. Prévision opérationnelle des niveaux de la mer, surcotes et décotes sur les côtes de la Manche et de l’Atlantique 5

Le système pré-opérationnel PREVIMER fournit des observations et des prévisions côtières sur les trois façades métropolitaines Manche, Atlantique et Méditerranée. Il fournit en particulier les prévisions de courants, niveaux de la mer, surcotes et décotes et vagues. L’objectif de l’étude est de mettre en place un système de modélisation des ondes longues (2DH) haute résolution (une centaine de mètres) sur l’ensemble des côtes métropolitaines. Les expériences menées dans le cadre de PREVIMER ont mis en évidence l’importance d’une meilleure prise en compte de l’action du vent et des vagues - par l’amélioration de la paramétrisation du coefficient de traînée en surface - et du wave set-up.
