Aluminium tolerance in the tropical leguminous N2-fixing shrub Acaciella angustissima (Mill.) Britton & Rose inoculated with Sinorhizobium mexicanum Gayana Botánica
RINCÓN-ROSALES,REINER; RUÍZ-VALDIVIEZO,VÍCTOR M; MONTES-MOLINA,JOAQUÍN A; GUTIÉRREZ-MICELI,FEDERICO A; DENDOOVEN,LUC.
The tropical legume Acaciella angustissima inoculated with or without Sinorhizobium mexicanum ITTG R7T strain was cultivated in an aluminium (Al) spiked soil to study its tolerance towards this metal. Seedlings of A. angustissima were grown in soil with 0, 2, 4 or 6 mg Al kg-1. The effect of Al and inoculation on growth, nodulation, and nitrogen and tannins content in the plants was monitored. Height and total and dry root weight of plantlets decreased significantly when soil was spiked with Al, but increased when inoculated. Al decreased the number of nodules. Inoculum increased total N and tannin content of the plantlets. It was found that Al reduced the growth of the tropical leguminous N2-fixing shrub A. angustissima, while inoculation with S....

Genetic diversity and symbiotic compatibility among rhizobial strains and Desmodium incanum and Lotus spp. plants Genet. Mol. Biol.
Granada,Camille E; Strochein,Marcos; Vargas,Luciano K; Bruxel,Manuela; Sá,Enilson Luiz Saccol de; Passaglia,Luciane M.P.
This work aimed to evaluate the symbiotic compatibility and nodulation efficiency of rhizobia isolated from Desmodium incanum, Lotus corniculatus, L. subbiflorus, L. uliginosus and L. glaber plants by cross-inoculation. Twelve reference strains and 21 native isolates of rhizobia were genetically analyzed by the BOX-PCR technique, which showed a high genetic diversity among the rhizobia studied. The isolates were also characterized based on their production of indolic compounds and siderophores, as well as on their tolerance to salinity. Fifteen of the 33 rhizobia analyzed were able to produce indolic compounds, whereas 13 produced siderophores. All the tested rhizobia were sensitive to high salinity, although some were able to grow in solutions of up to 2%...

Biological nitrogen fixation in soybean under water restriction and exposed to 1-methylcyclopropene PAB
Nascimento Junior,Vitor Camargo do; Prete,Cássio Egidio Cavenaghi; Nogueira,Marco Antonio.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to assess the effects of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on traits related with biological nitrogen fixation on 'BRS 268' soybean (Glycine max) subjected to water restriction. Plants were either exposed to drought between 32 (R2) and 47 (R3) days after sowing (DAS) or kept well-watered, in combination with exposure or not to 1-MCP. On the second day under drought (34 DAS), plants from both water conditions were exposed to 1-MCP in a hermetically sealed chamber for 15 hours. Control plants, dry or well-watered, that were not exposed to 1-MCP were kept in a separate chamber. At 36 (R2) and 47 (R3) DAS, shoot and root dry weights, leaf area index, number and dry weight of nodules, total ureides in sap, and N concentration...

Effect of water stress on nitrogen fixation and nodule structure of common bean PAB
Ramos,Maria Lucrecia Gerosa; Parsons,Richard; Sprent,Janet Irene; James,Euan Kelvin.
The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of water stress on N2 fixation and nodule structure of two common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars Carioca and EMGOPA-201. Plants were harvested after five and eight days of water stress. Carioca had lower nodule dry weight on both water stress periods; shoot dry weight was lower at five days water stress and did not differ from control after eight days stress. Both cultivars had lower nitrogenase activity than control after five and eight days water stress. For both cultivars, after eight days stress bacteroid membranes were damaged. Carioca presented more pronounced damage to infected tissue, with host cell vacuolation and loss of the peribacteroid membrane at five days after stress; at eight days...

Growth and yield of common bean cultivars at two soil phosphorus levels under biological nitrogen fixation PAB
ARAÚJO,ADELSON PAULO; TEIXEIRA,MARCELO GRANDI; ALMEIDA,DEJAIR LOPES DE.
The genotypic differences on growth and yield of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in response to P supply were evaluated in a field experiment under biological N2 fixation. Eight cultivars were grown at two levels of applied P (12 and 50 kg ha-1 of P -- P1 and P2 respectively), in randomized block design in factorial arrangement. Vegetative biomass was sampled at three ontogenetic stages. The effects of genotype and phosphorus were significant for most traits, but not the genotype ´ phosphorus interaction. The cultivars presented different patterns of biomass production and nutrient accumulation, particularly on root system. At P1, P accumulation persisted after the beginning of pod filling, and P translocation from roots to shoots was lower. The nodule...

Lipoxygenase activities during development of root and nodule of soybean PAB
Junghans,Tatiana Góes; Oliveira,Maria Goreti de Almeida; Moreira,Maurilio Alves.
The objective of this work was to evaluate root and nodule soybean lipoxygenases in Doko cultivar and in a near isogenic line lacking seed lipoxygenases, inoculated and uninoculated with Bradyrhizobium elkanii. The lipoxygenase activities from roots collected at 3, 5, 9, 13, 18 and 28 days post-inoculation and from nodules collected at 13, 18 and 28 days post-inoculation were measured. The pH-activity profiles from root and nodules suggested that the lipoxygenases pool expressed in these organs from Doko cultivar and triple-null near isogenic lines are similar. The root lipoxygenase activity of Doko and triple-null lines, inoculated and uninoculated, reduced over time. The highest lipoxygenase activity observed at the beginning of root formation suggests...

Liming influence on soil chemical properties, nutritional status and yield of alfalfa grown in acid soil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Moreira,Adônis; Fageria,Nand Kumar.
Alfalfa is an important forage crop with high nutritive value, although highly susceptible to soil acidity. Liming is one of the most efficient and prevailing practices to correct soil acidity and improve alfalfa yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate response to liming of alfalfa grown in a greenhouse on a Typic Quartzipsamment soil. The treatments consisted of four lime rates (0, 3.8, 6.6 and 10.3 Mg ha-1) and two cuts. Alfalfa dry matter increased quadratically with increasing lime rates. In general, dry matter yield was maximized by a lime rate of 8.0 Mg ha-1. Except for the control, the dry matter nutrient contents in the treatments were adequate. The positive linear correlation between root and nodule dry matter with lime rates indicated...

Seeds enriched with phosphorus and molybdenum improve the contribution of biological nitrogen fixation to common bean as estimated by 15n isotope dilution Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Chagas,Eduardo; Araújo,Adelson Paulo; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Teixeira,Marcelo Grandi.
Seeds with a high concentration of P or Mo can improve the growth and N accumulation of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), but the effect of enriched seeds on biological N2 fixation has not been established yet. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of seeds enriched with P and Mo on growth and biological N2 fixation of the common bean by the 15N isotope dilution technique. An experiment was carried out in pots in a 2 x 3 x 2 x 2 factorial design in randomized blocks with four replications, comprising two levels of soil applied P (0 and 80 mg kg-1), three N sources (without N, inoculated with rhizobia, and mineral N), two seed P concentrations (low and high), and two seed Mo concentrations (low and high). Non-nodulating bean and sorghum were used...

Rhizobial Inoculation and Molybdenum Fertilization in Peanut Crops Grown in a No Tillage System After 20 Years of Pasture Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Crusciol,Carlos Alexandre Costa; Ferrari Neto,Jayme; Mui,Tsai Siu; Franzluebbers,Alan Joseph; Costa,Cláudio Hideo Martins da; Castro,Gustavo Spadotti Amaral; Ribeiro,Lívia Cristina; Costa,Nídia Raquel.
ABSTRACT: Peanut (Arachis hypogea) is an important legume grain consumed by humans and utilized for effective nutrient cycling in a diverse cropping system. Areas that have been cultivated with perennial pasture for decades may have nutritional deficiencies and lack a sufficient population of atmospheric nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Molybdenum is an essential micronutrient that is part of the enzyme nitrogenase contained within symbiotic Bradyrhizobium bacteria, which are responsible for fixing nitrogen in legumes. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of application of Mo at different rates and a rhizobial inoculant on peanut growth characteristics. The experiment was conducted in the 2009/2010 growing season in a no-tillage cropping system following...

Effect of fertilizer-N application and seed coating with rhizobial inoculants on soybean yield in eastern Paraguay Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Kubota,Aki; Hoshiba,Kent; Bordon,Jorge.
Nitrogen removal in soybean grains at harvest may exceed biological N2 fixation, particularly if grain yields are as high as typically achieved on "Terra Rossa" soils of Eastern Paraguay. Applying N fertilizer or coating seeds with rhizobial inoculants that enhance nodulation may represent a way of balancing the N budget. However, the effects of such treatments appear to be highly site-specific. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of N application (N) and rhizobial inoculation (I) on nodulation, N accumulation and soybean yields in Eastern Paraguay. Field experiments were conducted in two consecutive soybean seasons. Dry conditions in the first year delayed sowing and reduced plant number m-2 and pod number plant-1. Grain yields were...

Seeds with high molybdenum concentration improved growth and nitrogen acquisition of rhizobium-inoculated and nitrogen-fertilized common bean plants Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Almeida,Fernanda Fátima Delgado; Araújo,Adelson Paulo; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues.
Seeds of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) with high molybdenum (Mo) concentration can supply Mo plant demands, but to date no studies have concomitantly evaluated the effects of Mo-enriched seeds on plants inoculated with rhizobia or treated with N fertilizer. This work evaluated the effects of seed Mo on growth and N acquisition of bean plants fertilized either by symbiotic N or mineral N, by measuring the activities of nitrogenase and nitrate reductase and the contribution of biological N2 fixation at different growth stages. Seeds enriched or not with Mo were sown with two N sources (inoculated with rhizobia or fertilized with N), in pots with 10 kg of soil. In experiment 1, an additional treatment consisted of Mo-enriched seeds with Mo applied to the...

Land use and vegetation cover on native symbionts and interactions with cowpea AGRIAMBI
Rocha,Beatriz C. F.; Santos,Enésia O. da S.; Santos,José G. D.; Takako,Adriana K.; Castro,Fabio J..
ABSTRACT Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and rhizobia are important components of agroecosystems and they respond to human interference. The objective of this study was to investigate native communities of those microorganisms in soil collected under the native forest, four pastures (Brachiaria brizantha, Panicum maximum, Arachis pintoi and Stylosanthes guianensis) and a fallow soil after maize cultivation, in interaction with cowpea (Vigna unguculata). The cowpea grew in a greenhouse until flowering. They were randomly distributed depending on soil, in five replications. The lowest mycorrhizal fungi sporulation and mycorrhizal root colonization occurred under the Panicum and forest soil. In the soils under forest and Stylosanthes, the cowpea did not exhibit...

Water restriction and physiological traits in soybean genotypes contrasting for nitrogen fixation drought tolerance Scientia Agricola
Cerezini,Paula; Fagotti,Dáfila dos Santos Lima; Pípolo,Antonio Eduardo; Hungria,Mariangela; Nogueira,Marco Antonio.
ABSTRACT Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is essential to the economic viability of the soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] crop in Brazil, but drought may impair the BNF processes. We evaluated physiological traits of nitrogen fixation drought-tolerant (NFDT) (R01-581F, R01-416F and R02-1325) and drought-susceptible (CD 215 and BRS 317) genotypes of soybean subjected to drought or regular water supply between 45 and 55 days after emergence, in an experiment under greenhouse conditions in pots containing non-sterile soil. R01-581F had more stable photosynthetic and transpiration rates, and higher intercellular CO2 levels under drought. Drought reduced the chlorophyll concentration in all genotypes, but with less intensity in R01-581F and R02-1325. The...
