Fast and reliable calibration of solid substrate fermentation kinetic models using advanced non-linear programming techniques Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Araya,M. Macarena; Arrieta,Juan J; Pérez-Correa,J. Ricardo; Biegler,Lorenz T; Jorquera,Héctor.
Calibration of mechanistic kinetic models describing microorganism growth and secondary metabolite production on solid substrates is difficult due to model complexity given the sheer number of parameters needing to be estimated and violation of standard conditions of numerical regularity. We show how advanced non-linear programming techniques can be applied to achieve fast and reliable calibration of a complex kinetic model describing growth of Gibberella fujikuroi and production of gibberellic acid on an inert solid support in glass columns. Experimental culture data was obtained under different temperature and water activity conditions. Model differential equations were discretized using orthogonal collocations on finite elements while model calibration...

Growth of Crassostrea gasar cultured in marine and estuary environments in Brazilian waters PAB
Lopes,Gustavo Ruschel; Gomes,Carlos Henrique Araujo de Miranda; Tureck,Cláudio Rudolfo; Melo,Claudio Manuel Rodrigues de.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth of the mangrove oyster Crassostrea gasar cultured in marine and estuarine environments. Oysters were cultured for 11 months in a longline system in two study sites - São Francisco do Sul and Florianópolis -, in the state of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil. Water chlorophyll-α concentration, temperature, and salinity were measured weekly. The oysters were measured monthly (shell size and weight gain) to assess growth. At the end of the culture period, the average wet flesh weight, dry flesh weight, and shell weight were determined, as well as the distribution of oysters per size class. Six nonlinear models (logistic, exponential, Gompertz, Brody, Richards, and Von Bertalanffy) were adjusted to the oyster...

Bayesian inference for the fitting of dry matter accumulation curves in garlic plants PAB
Macedo,Leandro Roberto de; Cecon,Paulo Roberto; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Nascimento,Moysés; Puiatti,Guilherme Alves; Oliveira,Ana Carolina Ribeiro de; Puiatti,Mario.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to identify nonlinear regression models that best describe dry matter accumulation curves over time, in garlic (Allium sativum) accessions, using Bayesian and frequentist approaches. Multivariate cluster analyses were made to group similar accessions according to the estimates of the parameters with biological interpretation (β1 and β3). In order to verify if the obtained groups were equal, statistical tests were applied to assess the parameter equality of the representative curves of each group. Thirty garlic accessions were used, which are kept by the vegetable germplasm bank of Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Brazil. The logistic model was the one that fit best to data in both approaches. Parameter estimates of...

The Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition for nonlinear regression models AgEcon
Sinning, Mathias; Hahn, Markus; Bauer, Thomas K..
In this article, a general Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition for nonlinear models is derived, which allows the difference in an outcome variable between two groups to be decomposed into several components. We show how, using nldecompose, this general decomposition can be applied to different models with discrete and limited dependent variables. We further demonstrate how the standard errors of the estimated components can be calculated by using Stata's bootstrap command as a prefix.

Computing interaction effects and standard errors in logit and probit models AgEcon
Norton, Edward C.; Wang, Hua; Ai, Chunrong.
This paper explains why computing the marginal effect of a change in two variables is more complicated in nonlinear models than in linear models. The command inteff computes the correct marginal effect of a change in two interacted variables for a logit or probit model, as well as the correct standard errors. The inteff command graphs the interaction effect and saves the results to allow further investigation.

Productive traits of rye cultivars grown under different sowing seasons AGRIAMBI
Kleinpaul,Jéssica A.; Cargnelutti Filho,Alberto; Carini,Fernanda; Pezzini,Rafael V.; Chaves,Gabriela G.; Thomasi,Rosana M..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to adjust the Gompertz and Logistic nonlinear models for the fresh and dry matter of aerial part and indicate the model that best describes the growth of two rye cultivars in five sowing seasons, as well as to characterize the growth of the cultivars regarding the fresh and dry matter of aerial part. Ten uniformity trials were conducted with the rye crop in 2016. A weekly sampling and evaluation of 10 plants per trial was performed from the time the plants presented one expanded leaf. For each plant, the fresh and dry matter of aerial part were weighed. The Gompertz and Logistic models were adjusted to the accumulated thermal time based on the measures of each trait in each assessment. Also the parameters a, b, and c for each...

Bayesian analysis for comparison of nonlinear regression model parameters: an application to ruminal degradability data R. Bras. Zootec.
Rossi,Robson Marcelo; Martins,Elias Nunes; Guedes,Terezinha Aparecida; Jobim,Clóves Cabreira.
This paper shows the Bayesian approach as an alternative to the classical analysis of nonlinear models for ruminal degradation data. The data set was obtained from a Latin square experimental design, established for testing the ruminal degradation of dry matter, crude protein and fiber in neutral detergent of three silages: elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) with bacterial inoculant or enzyme-bacterial inoculant and corn silage (Zea mays L.). The incubation times were 0, 2, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. The parameter estimates of the equations fitted by both methods showed small differences, but by the Bayesian approach it was possible to compare the estimates correctly, that does not happen with the frequentist methodology because it is much...

Adjustment of four growth models through Bayesian inference on weight and body nutrient depositions in laying quail R. Bras. Zootec.
Finco,Eline Maria; Marcato,Simara Márcia; Furlan,Antonio Claudio; Rossi,Robson Marcelo; Grieser,Daiane de Oliveira; Zancanela,Vittor; Oliveira,Taciana Maria Moraes de; Stanquevis,Caroline Espejo.
ABSTRACT An experiment was conducted to estimate the parameters of the Gompertz, Brody, Logistic, and Von Bertalanffy equations through Bayesian inference and evaluate the potential for growth in terms of weight and body composition of laying female quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The weights and body compositions of the birds were obtained weekly (1-119 days), allowing the adjustment of the four equations by Bayesian inference. The parameters mature weight (β1), integration constant (β2), maturity rate (β3), and their credibility intervals in four models on body weight and body components were properly estimated by Bayesian inference to describe the body growth in laying quail. The inflection point was determined by the 1st and 2nd derivatives of the...

Allaman,Ivan Bezerra; Reis Neto,Rafael Vilhena; Freitas,Rilke Tadeu Fonseca de; Freato,Thiago Archangelo; Lago,Aline de Assis; Costa,Adriano Carvalho; Lima,Renato Ribeiro de.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphometric growth and weight gain of strains of tilapia (Thai, Red, UFLA and Commercial) by nonlinear models. Initially, 500 male fingerlings of each strain, at 85 (Red and UFLA) and 86 (Thai and Commercial) days of age, were stocked separately in raceways with 56 m³. Twenty fish of each strain were randomly sampled, weighed and measured monthly. Five nonlinear models (Brody, von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, logistic and exponential) were tested, choosing one that best fit to the data. The variables studied were: weight, standard length (SL), head length (HL), height 1 (H1), height 2 (H2), height 3 (H3), first distance (D1), second distance (D2), first width (W1), second width (W2) and third width (W3). The...

Inflection and stability points of diphasic logistic analysis of growth Scientia Agricola
Mischan,Martha Maria; Passos,José Raimundo de Souza; Pinho,Sheila Zambello de; Carvalho,Lídia Raquel de.
Growth functions with inflection points following a diphasic model, can be adjusted by two approaches using segmented regression or the sum of two functions. In both cases, there are two functions, one for each phase, with inflection and stability points. However, when they are summed, the result is a new function and the points of inflection and stability are different from those obtained from using each function individually. A method to determine these points in a diphasic logistics sum of functions is suggested and the results obtained from fitting the models to eucalyptus growth data showed a better fit of the logistic diphasic sum as compared with segmented regression and monophasic logistic models.

Growth and yield models for eucalyptus stands obtained by differential equations Scientia Agricola
Mendonça,Adriano Ribeiro de; Calegario,Natalino; Silva,Gilson Fernandes da; Chaves e Carvalho,Samuel de Pádua.
ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this study was to assess nonlinear models generated by integrating the basal area growth rate to estimate the growth and yield of forest stands. The database was collected from permanent sample units, in Paraopeba county, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The stands were represented by Eucalyptus camaldulensis × Eucalyptus urophylla hybrid trees, with 3 × 3 meters of spacing. The data were divided into two groups: fitting and validating databases. Two nonlinear models (Strategy A and Strategy B) were developed using differential equations to estimate the basal area growth and yield of the sample units. The logistic model was fitted to estimate the volumetric yield as a function of age, site index and basal area. The...

Euterpe edulis seed germination parameters and genotype selection Agronomy
Guilhen, José Henrique Soler; Bernardes, Carolina de Oliveira; de Souza Marçal, Tiago; Oliveira, Wagner Bastos dos Santos; Ferreira, Marcia Flores da Silva; Ferreira, Adésio.
The palm tree juçara (Euterpe edulis Mart) is considered one of the most important and threatened native species in the Atlantic Forest. The search for juçara seeds (Euterpe edulis Martius) has increased, generating a need for technologies favorable to their production, quality and conservation. The aim of this study was to describe the seed germination patterns of 45 juçara accessions by using a nonlinear model to examine the behavior of these patterns and select superior genotypes. After clustering 45 juçara accessions into four groups, four nonlinear models, namely, the logistic, Gompertz, von Bertalanffy and Weibull models, were tested based on their fit for each group of accessions. The Gompertz model presented the best fit to describe the germination...

Growth curve of female collared peccaries (Pecari tajacu) raised in captivity in the Brazilian Amazon Region Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Garnero,A.D.V.; Marcondes,C.R.; Albuquerque,N.I.; Araújo,R.O.; Pendu,Y.; Guimarães,D.A..
This work aims to determine the most suitable nonlinear model to describe the growth of female collared peccaries (Pecari tajacu). The monthly records of the weight of 10 captive female collared peccaries over a period of two years in the Brazilian Amazon Region were used. The growth models used were the Von Bertalanffy, Brody, Gompertz and Logistic. The parameters were estimated by using the NLIN procedure from the SAS application. The criteria used to verify the adjustment of the models were: asymptotic standard deviation (ASD); coefficient of determination (R²); average absolute residual deviation (ARD) and the asymptotic rate (AR). The Brody model and the Logistic model estimated the highest (19.44kg) and the lowest (19.18kg) asymptotic weight (A),...

Deposition of bodily chemical components in the carcass of tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) strains Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Allaman,Ivan Bezerra; Reis Neto,Rafael Vilhena; Freitas,Rilke Tadeu Fonseca de; Rosa,Priscila Vieira; Lago,Aline de Assis; Costa,Adriano Carvalho.
The knowledge of how animals deposited chemical components as water, protein, fat and ash in the carcass is importance for the formulation of a balanced diet, allowing maximum performance with a low environmental impact. So, the study was carried out to evaluate the influence of different tilapia strains (Chitralada, Commercial, Red and Universidade Federal de Lavras [UFLA]) on the deposition of bodily chemical components in the carcass. The bodily components analyzed were water, protein, fat and ash. For the determination of the bodily chemical deposition curves by age, the exponential, Brody, logistic, Gompertz and von Bertalanffy models were adjusted. The Commercial and UFLA strains deposited water at a faster speed (P<0.05) compared with the...
