Stakeholder-led science: engaging resource managers to identify science needs for long-term management of floodplain conservation lands Ecology and Society
Bouska, Kristen L.; Missouri Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, University of Missouri; Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center, U.S. Geological Survey; kbouska@usgs.gov; Lindner, Garth A.; Missouri Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, University of Missouri; lindnerg@missouri.edu; Paukert, Craig P.; U.S. Geological Survey Missouri Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, University of Missouri; paukertc@missouri.edu; Jacobson, Robert B.; Columbia Environmental Research Center, U.S. Geological Survey; rjacobson@usgs.gov.
Floodplains pose challenges to managers of conservation lands because of constantly changing interactions with their rivers. Although scientific knowledge and understanding of the dynamics and drivers of river-floodplain systems can provide guidance to floodplain managers, the scientific process often occurs in isolation from management. Further, communication barriers between scientists and managers can be obstacles to appropriate application of scientific knowledge. With the coproduction of science in mind, our objectives were the following: (1) to document management priorities of floodplain conservation lands, and (2) identify science needs required to better manage the identified management priorities under nonstationary conditions, i.e., climate...

Nonstationarity in the Specification of the Environmental Kuznets Curve AgEcon
Zapata, Hector O.; Paudel, Krishna P..
Numerous studies have addressed the question of the econometric specification of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). This paper adds preliminary results on nonstationarity and its effect on functional form using a panel data set for the U.S. by state from 1929 to 1994. It is found that unit-root tests strongly support a unit root in pollutants (sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide) and income when testing individual states. The results from panel data unit root tests provide mixed evidence about nonstationarity in EKC data.

Recent Developments in Unit Root Tests and Historical Crop Yields AgEcon
Zapata, Hector O.; Maradiaga, David Isaias; Pujula, Aude Liliana; Dicks, Michael R..
This study conducts an investigation on the application of classical unit-root tests using parametric tests (the augmented Dickey-Fuller, 1979 – ADF), and nonparametric tests (Phillips and Perron, 1988—PP) to corn and soybean yields in the Delta states using county-level data from 1961 to 2009. The main concern of the paper is to assess what would be drawn about nonstationarity in crop yields using these tests versus using modified versions of these tests (Ng and Perron, 2001) that are assumed to solve size and power problems associated with the ADF and PP tests. The investigation focuses on methodological aspects of the classical tests, uncovers the nature of filtered yields often needed prior to density estimation, sheds light on the effect of lag...
