Intermediate and deep ocean current circulation in the Mozambique Channel: New insights from ferromanganese crust Nd isotopes ArchiMer
Charles, Claire; Pelleter, Ewan; Révillon, Sidonie; Nonnotte, Philippe; Jorry, Stephan; Kluska, Jean-michel.
The Mozambique Channel plays a key role in the exchange of water masses between the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, which include the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) inflow from the south and the North Indian Deep Water (NIDW), an aged form of the NADW spreading poleward from the northern and equatorial Indian Ocean basin. Several authors assume that the Davie Ridge acts as a topographic barrier to the northward advection of NADW, which would therefore be absent in the Comoros Basin. Other studies suggest that the NADW flows from the south of the Mozambique Channel to the Comoros Basin, indicating that the Davie Ridge may not currently constitute a blocking topographic barrier to deep water mass circulation. To address this question, we studied ferromanganese...

Acquisition of the neodymium isotopic composition of the North Atlantic Deep Water ArchiMer
Lacan, F; Jeandel, C.
The North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) neodymium isotopic composition (Nd IC) is increasingly used in oceanography and paleoceanography to trace large-scale circulation and weathering processes, notably to investigate past variations of the global thermohaline circulation. Although the present-day NADW Nd IC is well characterized at epsilon(Nd) = - 13.5, the acquisition of this isotopic signature ( in other words, the causes of this value) has so far been very sparsely documented. Such an understanding is, however, fundamental to the interpretation of paleo records. Nd IC and rare earth element concentrations were measured at 9 stations within the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre ( SIGNATURE cruise, summer 1999). The comparison of this data set with our...

The mid-depth circulation of the northwestern tropical Atlantic observed by floats ArchiMer
Lankhorst, Matthias; Fratantoni, David; Ollitrault, Michel; Richardson, Philip; Send, Uwe; Zenk, Walter.
A comprehensive analysis of velocity data from subsurface floats in the northwestern tropical Atlantic at two depth layers is presented: one representing the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW, pressure range 600-1050dbar), the other the upper North Atlantic Deep Water (uNADW, pressure range 1200-2050dbar). New data from three independent research programs are combined with previously available data to achieve blanket coverage in space for the AAIW layer, while coverage in the uNADW remains more intermittent. Results from the AAIW` mainly confirm previous studies on the mean flow, namely the equatorial zonal and the boundary currents, but clarify details on pathways, mostly by virtue of the spatial data coverage that sets float observations apart from e.g....

Deep water variability on the southern Agulhas Plateau: Interhemispheric links over the past 170 ka ArchiMer
Molyneux, Elizabeth G.; Hall, Ian R.; Zahn, Rainer; Diz, Paula.
Sortable silt mean grain sizes together with oxygen and carbon isotopic data produced on the benthic foraminiferal species Fontbotia wuellerstorfi are used to construct high-resolution records of near-bottom flow vigour and deep water ventilation at a core site MD02-2589 located at 2660 m water depth on the southern Agulhas Plateau. The results suggest that during glacial periods ( marine oxygen isotope stages 2 and 6, MIS 2 and MIS 6, respectively), there was a persistent contribution of a well-ventilated water mass within the Atlantic to Indian oceanic gateway with a delta(13)C signature similar to present-day Northern Component Water (NCW), e. g., North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). The records of chemical ventilation and near-bottom flow vigor reflect...
