A new bathyphotometer for bioluminescence measurements on the Armorican continental shelf (northeastern Atlantic) ArchiMer
Geistdoerfer, P; Vincendeau, Ma.
A new bathyphotometer has been developed by the Oceanographic Laboratory of the French Naval Academy which has performed a series of in situ bioluminescence: measurements since 1994. It is used as an additional probe to a Seabird (R) CTD. It measures planktonic bioluminescence. It is associated with a SeaTech (R) fluorometer. The Armorican shelf has particularly been investigated since July 1994. Results obtained in January and April 1995 off Brittany (France), at the entrance to the Bay of Douarnenez and in the northern Bay of Biscay are presented as examples. A method to separate the bioluminescence background from sharp peaks is presented. The strength of bioluminescence signals was related to seasonal planktonic biomass fluctuations, low in winter,...

Observed mean and mesoscale upper ocean circulation in the midlatitude northeast Atlantic ArchiMer
Le Cann, Bernard; Assenbaum, Michel; Gascard, Jean-claude; Reverdin, Gilles.
Lagrangian instruments and altimetry data are used to investigate the upper ( 0 to similar to 500 m) mean and mesoscale circulations in a region of the midlatitude northeast Atlantic (36 degrees - 47 degrees N, 13 degrees - 23 degrees W), a formation and subduction area of Subpolar Mode Water. Lagrangian data were collected between September 2000 and September 2001 with isobaric subsurface floats, totaling 34.0 float years, and surface drifting buoys, totaling 27.9 buoy years. The near-surface ( 0 - 100 m) mean circulation is dominated by two weak ( similar to 5 cm/s) eastward currents which veer southward in the domain. In the 100- to 500-m-deep layer, these eastward mean currents retroflect westward and form two anticyclonic circulation cells, opened to...

Inter-specific and ontogenic differences in delta C-13 and delta N-15 values and Hg and Cd concentrations in cephalopods ArchiMer
Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Spitz, Jerome; Cherel, Y.; Caurant, Florence; Sirmel, R.; Mendez-fernandez, P.; Bustamante, Paco.
Chemical tracers (e. g. stable isotopes or trace metals) are increasingly used to study trophic ecology and feeding habits of marine organisms and various factors can affect their values. The aim of the present study was to provide information on ontogenic effects on stable carbon and nitrogen values (delta C-13 and delta N-15) and on cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) concentrations in 5 cephalopod species from the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic Ocean). To this end, individuals belonging to 3 species showing the widest range of sizes were analysed for muscle delta C-13 and delta N-15 values and muscle Hg, and digestive gland Cd concentrations. Results showed that stable isotope ratios allowed discrimination of specific feeding strategies during...
