Annual changes in a bird assembly on artificial perches: Implications for ecological restoration in a subtropical agroecosystem Biota Neotropica
Vogel,Huilquer Francisco; Spotswood,Erica; Campos,João Batista; Bechara,Fernando Campanhã.
Artificial perches are used in tropical forest restoration projects to increase the dispersal of seeds into restored areas. The ability of perches to enhance seed deposition depends on their ability to attract seed dispersing birds, as well as the correlation between the season of bird visits to perches and the phenology of fruit production in adjacent forests. Using data collected from a large-scale restoration project, we characterized the community of birds that utilize artificial perches over the course of one year. We hypothesized that the structure of a bird assemblage that uses artificial perches is affected by seasonal variation. We aimed to describe the richness, abundance and diversity of a bird assemblage on artificial perches in a subtropical...

Methane hydrate nucleation and growth from the bulk phase: Further insights into their mechanisms ArchiMer
Fandino, Olivia; Ruffine, Livio.
Methane hydrate nucleation and growth from a bulk phase has been investigated using a quiescent high-pressure view cell. Several hydrate formation/dissociation cycles have been performed at two different initial pressures (10 MPa and 19.5 MPa). Every experiment was performed with a maximum of five consecutive cycles of cooling/heating. For each cycle, the induction time of incipient hydrate formation has been determined. On one hand, results obtained from cycles using fresh water led to the conclusion that the hydrate formation process is rather stochastic, with induction times varying over a large scale. On the other hand, the whole dataset enabled us to investigate on the controversial memory effect of water which may have the ability to fasten the...

Quantitative analysis of seed rain under natural and artificial perches in the Araucaria Forest PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Mikich, Sandra Bos; Possette, Rafael Fernando da Silva.
The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency in terms of number of seeds deposited under natural and artificial bird-perches set in degraded areas of Araucaria Forest. Six experimental units were used, each containing seed traps set under natural perches (NP), artificial perches (AP) and under open sky (OS). After 12 months of weekly sampling 26880 zoochoric seeds were collected under AP, 5729 under NP, and only seven under OS. Thus, the presence of perches increases dramatically seed deposition and NP are more or as efficient as AP when the effect of deposition area is taken into account.
