In the eutrophicated Bay of Saint-Brieuc (western English Channel, France), density and biomass of the multicellular meiofauna were estimated in different intertidal and subtidal biotopes, in winter and late spring. Mean annual biomass varies from 0.5 to 2.3 g.m-2 in the intertidal zone, and from 0.5 to 1.1 g.m-2 in the subtidal zone. Vertical distribution (0-5 versus 5-10 cm) of taxa was considered in the intertidal zone. Results are discussed and compared to literature data: figures were similar to those of comparable biotopes, and there was no detectable effect of eutrophication on meiofauna density and vertical distribution in this area. The ''seasonal stability'' of nematodes was in contrast with a clear annual cycle in harpacticoid copepods. Biomass... |

Relationships between benthos and sedimentary organic matter quality were analyzed in the West Gironde Mud Patch (WGMP), on the shelf of the Bay of Biscay, off the Gironde estuary, as part of the multidisciplinary national programme Ecomarge, a JGOFS-France contribution. At three stations located on an east-west transect and at different periods from 1985 to 1988, the following parameters of the sediment were analyzed: POC (particulate organic carbon); SIGMA (sum of easily extractable macromolecules thought to be the most degradable part of particulate organic matter); pigments as indices of organic matter quality; ETS (electron-transport-system) activities and meiofauna densities as indices of benthic responses. Sediments from the WGMP have an overall low... |

The biochemical composition of the sediments in a Mediterranean submarine cave (Marseille, France) was studied, and a budget for the biogeochemical cycle of organic carbon was calculated. Chloropigment and lipid levels were markedly lower in sediments from the dark inner section of the cave compared to the twilight outer section. These decreased levels were related to the decrease in the vertical inputs of particulate organic matter. Lower decreases were recorded in the sediment content of other organic constituents (organic carbon, organic nitrogen, carbohydrates, proteins). The analysis of carbohydrate and protein extracted from sediments (NaOH 1 N, 24 h, 4-degrees-C) yielded no significant information, demonstrating the ambiguous significance of such a... |
