Indigenous Arctic and Subarctic communities currently are facing a myriad of social and environmental changes. In response to these changes, studies concerning indigenous knowledge (IK) and climate change vulnerability, resiliency, and adaptation have increased dramatically in recent years. Risks to lives and livelihoods are often the focus of adaptation research; however, the cultural dimensions of climate change are equally important because cultural dimensions inform perceptions of risk. Furthermore, many Arctic and Subarctic IK climate change studies document observations of change and knowledge of the elders and older generations in a community, but few include the perspectives of the younger population. These observations by elders and older...

ArchiMer
Marchand, Jocelyne.
This study was the first to be undertaken since 1901, since when natural and industrial changes had occurred to affect the habitat. Observations are reported here for the banks of the north and south shores, using certain points as reference. Features of the 2 shores are described, and an inventory given of the fauna of the banks. Hydrozoan Cnidaria, Bryozoans, Annelids, Molluscs, Crustacea and fish are listed with notes, and particular attention is given to the crabs found (Rhithropanopeus harrisii tridentatus). The monthly distribution of crab sizes and sexes is given, and the species of animals found in association with crabs is shown to vary according to the site studied. The percentage of female crabs found to be fertile each month was investigated,...

Normand, Julien; Benabdelmouna, Abdellah; Louis, Wilfried; Grizon, James.

Circulation on the shelf and the upper slope of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Le Boyer, Arnaud; Charria, Guillaume; Le Cann, Bernard; Lazure, Pascal; Marie, Louis.
Here, we used measurements taken with an array of 10 acoustic Doppler current profilers deployed from July 2009 to August 2011 to describe the tidally filtered circulation over the shelf and upper slope on the French side off the French coasts of the Bay of Biscay. The measurements provided an overview of the shelf and slope circulation throughout the entire water column over a large range of spatial and time scales. The average circulation over the shelf and upper slope of the Bay of Biscay was poleward following the topography with a speed of the order of 3 cm s(-1). This average circulation had marked seasonal variability. In summer, the currents were equatorward on the outer shelf near surface. Deeper in the water column, the flow remained poleward. In...

Normand, Julien; Louis, Wilfried; Grizon, James.

Latrouite, Daniel.
The scientific cruise Observhal98 took place in Biscay Bay, May 14 to June 6, 1998, with the submersible Nautile operated from the research vessel Nadir. The goal was to make direct underwater observations on fishes and invertebrates of commercial interest, on the environment in which they live and on the impact of fishing gears. A total of 22 dives, 2 to 5 hours long have been operated, ten by depth 1800 to 1000 m, three by 500 to 200 m, seven by 80 to 200 m and two in the water column. An in situ technic have been developped and operated from the submarine, with the aim of studying the growth scheme of deep water fishes. Specimen of Hoplostethus atlanticus and Trachyscorpia cristualata have been caught, anesthetised, injected with vital coloring and...

Consumer behaviour in agricultural direct marketing AgEcon
Heer, Ines M..
Scandals in the food production industry have caused an uncertainty about quality and innocuousness of food for many consumers. This resulted in a strong risk perception of consumers at the point of sale. The direct marketing of products by farmers can be an important way to strengthen consumer confidence. In this contribution, buying behaviour is examined by an observation and a following interview. We develop an econometric model about the number of bought products and the proposition of marketing strategies which can be recommended to farmers involved in direct marketing.

Responses of wild titi monkeys, Callicebus coimbrai (Primates: Platyrrhini: Pitheciidae), to the habituation process Rev. Bras. Zool.
Souza-Alves,João Pedro; Ferrari,Stephen F..
Adequate habituation of free-ranging subjects is essential for any field study, but is generally unsystematic. Here, attempts to habituate three titi monkey (Callicebus coimbrai Kobayashi & Langguth, 1999) groups are described, and factors determining the effectiveness of the process are discussed. The "relentless pursuit" approach was aided by playback recordings of vocalizations but only one group was habituated adequately. Average contact in 13 encounters with group 1 was just over one minute, whereas in 32 encounters with group 2, it averaged 3,5 minutes (maximum = 22 minutes). Group 3 was more tolerant of observers, and was considered fully habituated by the seventh encounter. The factors determining this disparity remain unclear, although...
