To design offshore structures, to prepare operations at sea and unusual transportations on marine routes, to assess safety levels with respect to marine climate, one needs practical data describing the wave, wind and current conditions that may occur. This essential information is unfortunately very seldom readily available exactly for the geographical area of interest. Where to look for it, how to evaluate and choose amongst what one may find, how to get aware of its adequation and drawbacks for the projected use, whom to call for help, as many questions to which this report is expected to bring some answers. Engineers in charge of coastal or offshore projects, logistics managers implied in sea transportations, underwriters, planners for shore equipments... |

A 1/6degrees resolution primitive equation model of the Atlantic circulation is analyzed in the Agulhas region. The model has a realistic level of eddy kinetic energy, and produces anticyclonic Agulhas rings as well as cyclonic structures. In the model as well as in the data, ring trajectories undergo a transition between a turbulent character in the Cape Basin and a steady propagation in the rest of the South Atlantic. The topography of the Walvis Ridge does not seem to play a part in generating this contrast in the model. The model shows that cyclones are primarily generated from the negative shear vorticity side of the Agulhas Current as it leaves the coast, and they are most of the time paired with anticyclones in dipolar or tripolar structures.... |

The Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) collects multiple spectral band images, corresponding to specific sensing wavelengths and spatial resolutions, i.e. 10 m, 20 m and 60 m, respectively. Images are collected one at the time with a given time-lag between observations. Under favorable conditions, spatio-temporal characteristics of propagating ocean surface waves can thus uniquely be retrieved. A method for surface current vector field reconstruction is then developed. Demonstrated over different deep ocean regions, the retrieved surface current fields well compare with medium-resolution ocean circulation model or derived-velocities from altimeter measurements. At finer scales, the surface wave-conservation law is recovered, with the associated... |

Debris from fisheries pose significant threats to coastal marine ecosystems worldwide. Tropical tuna purse seine fisheries contribute to this problem via the construction and deployment of thousands of human-made drifting fish aggregating devices (dFADs) annually, many of which end up beaching in coastal areas. Here, we analyzed approximately 40,000 dFAD trajectories in the Indian Ocean and 12,000 dFAD trajectories in the Atlantic Ocean deployed over the decade 2008–2017 to identify where and when beachings occur. We find that there is tremendous promise for reducing beaching events by prohibiting deployments in areas most likely to lead to a beaching. For example, our results indicate that 21% to 40% (depending on effort redistribution after closure) of... |
