RESPUESTA DEL AMBIENTE MARINO A ALGUNOS EVENTOS METEOROLÓGICOS SINÓPTICOS MEDIDOS SOBRE LOS ARRECIFES DE SAN ANDRÉS Y DE LAS ISLAS DEL ROSARIO, CARIBE COLOMBIANO* Boletín de Investigaciones
Gutiérrez-Moreno,Carolina; Marrugo,Milena; Andrade,Carlos Alberto.
Continuous measurements were taken of oceanographic and meteorological parameters for two stations of the Global Ocean Observing System of the Southwest Caribbean, framed in the INAP project. The response of the surface layer, to atmospheric events, allowed to differentiate the pass of two cold fronts by Johnny Cay station (San Andres Island) and the arrival of the "Veranillo" in the sensors of Tesoro Island (Islas del Rosario, Cartagena). The cold fronts produced a decrease in the atmospheric pressure, air temperature, caused radical changes in wind direction and speed followed by precipitation. This situation lowered the sea surface temperature, the surface layer pH and rose momentarily the sea level. The "Veranillo" came to Archipelago of Rosario...

Design of an oceanographic sampling network for the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, Pacific of Colombia Boletín de Investigaciones
Herrera Carmona,Julio César; Cuéllar Chacón,Andrés; Giraldo López,Alan.
ABSTRACT In order to generate inputs for the management of the Sanctuary, the Pacific Territorial Directorate of National Natural Parks began in 2006 a monitoring of oceanographic conditions in the area. Currently, this monitoring has a sampling network of only six stations located 0.93 km (0.5 nm) and 1.85 km (1 nm) from the island, so it is not efficient due to the reduced distance between stations, and insufficient given the large extension of the Sanctuary. Therefore, a sampling network was designed based on Sea Surface Temperature (TSM) data taken in situ and derived from the Modis-Aqua remote sensor. The spatial autocorrelation structure was analyzed through a semi-variance function. The decision to choose the best sampling network among the...

"EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF OCEANOGRAPHERS" IN REGIONAL SCHOOLS ON THE CULTURE AND INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE OF SCIENCE Gayana
Young,Helen; Stuardo,José R.; Jones,Ian S.F..
This paper addresses the question of why the intellectual leadership of Oceanography is currently vested in developed countries while it is argued that developing countries have greater needs for the outcomes of Oceanography. The norms of the research science culture are discussed. These norms are not embedded in the culture of some developing regions but are central to western industrial societies. English language, as a carrier of the culture of science, is identified as a key element in enabling graduates to be leaders in their region and players on the international stage. The prospect of regional schools of excellence to educate indigenous graduates in Oceanography is explored as a way of empowering developing country professionals and of halting the...

The Eddy Experiment: GNSS-R speculometry for directional sea-roughness retrieval from low altitude aircraft - art. no. L21307 ArchiMer
Germain, O; Ruffini, Giulio; Soulat, F; Caparrini, M; Chapron, Bertrand; Silvestrin, P.
We report the retrieval of sea surface directional mean square slope from Global Navigation Satellite System Reflections (GNSS-R) Delay-Doppler-Map (DDM) data collected during an experimental flight at 1 km altitude. We emphasize the utilization of the entire DDM to more precisely infer ocean roughness directional parameters, and argue that the DDM exhibits the impact of both roughness and scatterer velocity. Obtained estimates are analyzed and compared with Jason-1 measurements, ECMWF numerical weather model outputs and optical data.

Baroclinic transport variability of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current south of Australia (WOCE repeat section SR3) ArchiMer
Rintoul, Sr; Sokolov, S.
Baroclinic transport variability of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) near 140 degreesE is estimated from six: occupations of a repeat section occupied as part of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE section SR3). The mean top-to-bottom volume transport is 147+/-10 Sv (mean +/-1 standard deviation), relative to a deep reference level consistent with water mass properties and float trajectories. The location and transport of the main fronts of the ACC are relatively steady: the Subantarctic Front carries 105+/-7 Sv at a mean latitude between 51.0 and 52 degreesS; the northern branch of the Polar Front carries 5+/-5 Sv to the east between 53 degrees and 54 degreesS; the southern Polar Front carries 24+/-3 Sv eastward at 59 degreesS; and two...

An eddy-permitting model of the Atlantic circulation: Evaluating open boundary conditions ArchiMer
Treguier, Anne-marie; Barnier, B; De Miranda, A; Molines, J; Grima, N; Imbard, M; Madec, Gerard; Messager, Christophe; Reynaud, Thierry; Michel, Sylvain.
As part of the French CLIPPER project, an eddy permitting model of the Atlantic circulation has been run for 22 years. The domain has open boundaries at Drake passage and at 30 degreesE, from Africa to Antarctica. The simulated mean circulation, as well as the eddy activity, is satisfactory for a 1/3 degrees model resolution, and the meridional heat transport at 30 degreesS is within the range estimated from observations. We use the "mixed" open boundary algorithm of Barnier et al. [1998], which has both a radiation condition and a relaxation to climatology. The climatological boundary forcing strongly constrains the solution in the whole domain. The model heat balance adjusts through the surface (heat flux retroaction term) more than the open boundaries....

The India-France SARAL/AltiKa mission is the first Ka-band altimetric mission dedicated primarily to oceanography. The mission objectives were firstly the observation of the oceanic mesoscales but also global and regional sea level monitoring, including the coastal zone, data assimilation, and operational oceanography. SARAL/AltiKa proved also to be a great opportunity for inland waters applications, for observing ice sheet or icebergs, as well as for geodetic investigations. The mission ended its nominal phase after three years in orbit and began a new phase (drifting orbit) in July 2016. The objective of this paper is to highlight some of the most remarkable achievements of the SARAL/AltiKa mission in terms of scientific applications. Compared to the...

Alkenone distributions in the North Atlantic and Nordic sea surface waters ArchiMer
Sicre, Ma; Bard, E; Ezat, U; Rostek, F.
The C(37)-C(39) alkenones were quantified in suspended particulate matter obtained from the surface waters of the North Atlantic, including the Nordic seas, over a temperature range of 4degrees20 C. U(37)(K') values were linearly correlated to temperature over the entire range covered by our data set, i.e., 420 C (U(37)(K') = 0.027T + 0.036, r(2) = 0.97). The compilation of water column data from the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Ocean and Mediterranean Sea suggests that the linear model may not be the best function for fitting U(37)(K') and in situ temperature values. It also shows that suspended matter data from warm waters (T >20degreesC) are still needed to constrain the equation of the global curve. High abundances of C(37: 4) were found in the...

Analyse des risques pour les mammifères marins liés à l'emploi des méthodes acoustiques en océanographie ArchiMer
Lurton, Xavier; Antoine, Loic.
The use of acoustical systems in various human activities in the ocean (industry, defence, science) raises the issue of their impact upon marine mammals populations. Several serious accidents linked to the use of naval sonars led the military, industrial and scientific communities to investigate the potential dangers of their own activity. This report aims at identifying the risks for the cetaceans linked to the use of acoustic and seismic systems currently used for oceanographic science. The analysis proposed here stays within the frame of bibliography synthesis and elementary modelling, and brings no new scientific elements on the topic. An overview of the status of cetacean populations is given first, with a summary of the possible acoustical...

Hydrology and circulation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman - Results from the GOGP99 experiment: 1. Strait of Hormuz - art. no. C12037 ArchiMer
Pous, Stephane; Carton, Xavier; Lazure, Pascal.
In October and early November 1999, the GOGP99 experiment collected hydrological, currentmeter, tide recorder, thermistor and drifting buoy data near the Strait of Hormuz. Data analysis provides the water mass structure in the Strait: Persian Gulf Water (PGW) core is banked against the Omani coast, while Indian Ocean Surface Water (IOSW) lies near the Iranian coast. These water masses are most often covered by a homogeneous surface layer. Thermohaline characteristics of the PGW core decrease substantially downstream, from the Persian/Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. PGW and IOSW thermohaline characteristics and distribution also exhibit notable changes at periods shorter than a month as shown by repeated hydrological sections. The tidal signal measured...

In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and...

Impact des missions altimétriques et des réseaux de mesure in situ actuels et futurs sur l'analyse et la prévision océanique ArchiMer
Verrier, Simon.
Two series of Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) are carried out with global data assimilation systems at 1/4° and 1/12° resolution using simulated altimetry (satellite) and in situ (Argo  oat) data derived from a 1/12° resolution free run simulation. The objectives are to quantify how well di erent data sets can constrain a global data assimilation system. The positive impact of multiple altimeter data is clearly evidenced on sea level and ocean currents. The addition of Argo has a major impact to improve temperature and demonstrates the essential role of Argo together with altimetry to constrain a global data assimilation system. Results derived from these OSSEs are consistent with those derived from experiments with real data (observing...

Internal and forced variability along a section between Greenland and Portugal in the CLIPPER Atlantic model ArchiMer
Treguier, Anne-marie; Gourcuff, Claire; Lherminier, Pascale; Mercier, Herle; Barnier, Bernard; Madec, Gurvan; Molines, Jean-marc; Penduff, Thierry; Czeschel, Lars; Boning, Claus.
Numerical models are used to estimate the meridional overturning and transports along the paths of two hydrographic cruises, carried out in 1997 and 2002 from Greenland to Portugal. We have examined the influence of the different paths of the two cruises and found that it could explain 0.4 to 2 Sv of difference in overturning (the precise value is model-dependent). Models show a decrease in the overturning circulation between 1997 and 2002, with different amplitudes. The CLIPPER ATL6 model reproduces well the observed weakening of the overturning in density coordinates between the cruises; in the model, the change is due to the combination of interannual and high-frequency forcing and internal variability associated with eddies and meanders. Examination of...

The L-band interferometric radiometer onboard the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission will measure polarized brightness temperatures (Tb). The measurements are affected by strong radiometric noise. However, during a satellite overpass, numerous measurements are acquired at various incidence angles at the same location on the Earth's surface. The sea surface salinity (SSS) retrieval algorithm implemented in the Level 2 Salinity Prototype Processor (L2SPP) is based on an iterative inversion method that minimizes the differences between Tb measured at different incidence angles and Tb simulated by a full forward model. The iterative method is initialized with a first-guess surface salinity that is iteratively modified until an optimal fit between the...

Glacial Ocean Dynamics: Insight from Deep-Sea Coral Reconstructions and A Time-Dependent Dynamical Box Model ArchiMer
Hines, Sophia Katharine Vizza.
Glacial-interglacial cycles, occurring at a period of approximately 100,000 years, have dominated Earth's climate over the past 800,000 years. These cycles involve major changes in land ice, global sea level, ocean circulation, and the carbon cycle. While it is generally agreed that the ultimate driver of global climate is changes in insolation, glacial cycles do not look like insolation forcing. Notably, there is a highly non-linear warming response at 100,000 years to a relatively small forcing, implicating a more complicated system of biogeochemical and physical drivers. The ocean plays a pivotal role in glacial-interglacial climate through direct equator-to-pole transport of heat and its role in the carbon cycle. The deep ocean contains 60 times more...

Utilisation des submersibles en biologie et en ecologie abyssale ArchiMer
Alayse, Anne-marie.
With the advent of deep submergence research vessels (DSRVs) biological and ecological studies of ocean deeps have made great strides. Especially these submersibles allowed to conduct physiological and biochemical experiments on benthic fauna directly on the bottom or on board with alive retrieved animals. A second great interest is the possibility to work in chaotic areas and on microenvironments. Without DSRVs most of measurements and observations obtained on hydrothermals vents would had been impossible. We will present the different equipment designed for the two French DSRVs used during the cruises conducted by the Departement "Environnement Profond" de l'IFREMER to study hydrothermal and "normal" deep-sea ecosystems. Impact of oceanic-scale interactions on the seasonal modulation of ocean dynamics by the atmosphere ArchiMer
Sasaki, Hideharu; Klein, Patrice; Qiu, Bo; Sasai, Yoshikazu.
Ocean eddies (with a size of 100-300 km), ubiquitous in satellite observations, are known to represent about 80% of the total ocean kinetic energy. Recent studies have pointed out the unexpected role of smaller oceanic structures (with 1-50 km scales) in generating and sustaining these eddies. The interpretation proposed so far invokes the internal instability resulting from the large-scale interaction between upper and interior oceanic layers. Here we show, using a new high-resolution simulation of the realistic North Pacific Ocean, that ocean eddies are instead sustained by a different process that involves small-scale mixed-layer instabilities set up by large-scale atmospheric forcing in winter. This leads to a seasonal evolution of the eddy kinetic...

Progress in satellite remote sensing for studying physical processes at the ocean surface and its borders with the atmosphere and sea ice ArchiMer

Physical oceanography is the study of physical conditions, processes and variables within the ocean, including temperature-salinity distributions, mixing of the water column, waves, tides, currents and air-sea interaction processes. Here we provide a critical review of how satellite sensors are being used to study physical oceanography processes at the ocean surface and its borders with the atmosphere and sea ice. The paper begins by describing the main sensor types that are used to observe the oceans (visible, thermal infrared and microwave) and the specific observations that each of these sensor types can provide. We then present a critical review of how these sensors and observations are being used to study: (i) ocean surface currents, (ii) storm...
