The objective of this study, carried out from October to December 2006, was to analyze the effects of increasing doses of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) as well as the interaction between these elements on the growth of sweet basil plants cultivated under field conditions. The experimental design was split plots, holding in the main plots the N doses and in the subplots the K rates. Doses of 0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1 were established for N and K, applied as urea and potassium chloride, respectively. The seedlings were transplanted to beds, in 40 x 30 cm spacing, and each plot had 24 plants. The evaluations at 45 days after transplanting detected no effect of N levels in stem diameter, Spad index and number of internodes. A quadratic polynomial model was... |

ABSTRACT Basil is an aromatic herb that stands out for its economic importance. It is consumed in natura and used to obtain essential oil. The cultivation of this species in several regions of the world has allowed variations by natural crosses and euploidy, leading to the wide genetic variability found nowadays. Considering the importance of this species, we aimed to analyze the genetic diversity of 27 basil genotypes using ISSR molecular markers. Fourteen primers were employed for DNA amplification, resulting in 86% polymorphism. Based on the Jaccard’s dissimilarity index, the highest index (0.80) was observed between the individuals BAS001 and BAS012, while the lowest index (0.18) was detected between the genotypes BAS014 and BAS015. The genetic... |

ABSTRACT Basil is used as spice and for medicinal purposes. Its growth is influenced by environmental factors, mainly soil moisture and air temperature. Thus, this study was installed to evaluate growth and production of basil under different levels of luminosity and water replacement. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six replicates, arranged in split plot scheme, with three luminosity levels in the plots (full sun, 50% and 70% shading) and four water replacement levels in the subplots (25, 50, 75 and 100% ETc). We evaluated plant height, stalk diameter, number of leaves and branches, root system volume, the largest root length, fresh and dry mass of roots and leaves. Data were submitted to variance analysis to observe significant... |

Fresh basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is used in food, phytotherapic industry, and in traditional therapeutic, due to its essential oil content and composition. Nevertheless basil can not be kept for long periods after harvest and its quality can be reduced. This work aimed to assess the influence of the season and harvest time in the postharvest conservation of basil stored for different periods. Basil was harvested at 8 am and 4 pm both in August/1999 and January/2000. Cuttings were conditioned in PVC packages and stored for 3, 6, and 9 days. During storage, chlorophyll content, essential oil content and composition were determined as well as microbiological analyses were carried out. Harvest season and the days of storage influenced the final content of... |

The aim of this work was to determine the in vitro antifungal activity of ten essential oils on Alternaria solani SORAUER. The effect by direct contact and exposure to vapors was evaluated. The bioassays were performed using a completely randomized design and the method of paper discs inoculated with the oils facing phytopathogen discs; the fungal radial growth was evaluated. All the oils, except those from Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck (sweet orange), inhibited the mycelial growth until the seventh day. At day 14, a total inhibition was observed in the treatments with the oils from Pimpinella anisum L. (anise), Ocimum basilicum L. (white basil), Ocinum basilicum L. var. genovese (Genovese basil), and Piper auritum Kunth (anise caisimon). No fungicidal... |
