Odour Reduction from Pig Housing using Alkaline Air Cleaning CIGR Journal
Joergensen, M..
Testing the addition of an alkali (NaOH) in an air cleaner (Munters A/S) connected to a finisher pig unit during the summer resulted in an average odour reduction of 47%. The measurement days were spread over two batches of pigs (summer and autumn). The average odour reduction for the entire test period was 41%. The measurements taken during the autumn did not show a statistically significant odour reduction. Furthermore, the results showed that it was possible to reduce the emission of hydrogen sulphide by 53%. As expected, the levels of ammonia and carbon dioxide were not reduced. When using 100% air cleaning, the consumption of the air cleaner for two batches of finishers (30 – 110 kg) amounted to 355 L water and 2.4 kg 27.7% NaOH solution,...

Removal Efficiencies in Full-scale Biotrickling Filters used to clean Pig House Exhaust Air CIGR Journal
Rune R. Andreasen; Anders L Riis; Knud Mortense.
In this study, we tested the performance and perspectives of four full-scale biotrickling filters based on Leca® (Light Expanded Clay Aggregates), a mechanically stable, non-degradable filter media, known to absorb odorous compounds such as H2S and methanethiol. The four filters varied in: filter thickness, carrying media, and the presence of dust filters. Biological Leca® filters were found to be capable of reducing NH3, H2S and odour by up to 96%, 80% and 78%, respectively. Clogging was observed to occur after approximately 100 days, but the installation of a dust filter successfully eliminated this problem.

Sensory quality of meat from Santa Inês lambs fed with guava (Psidium guajava L.) agroindustrial by-product Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
COSTA,Roberto Germano; CAVALCANTI,Maria Caroline de Almeida; NOBRE,Priscila Torres; QUEIROGA,Rita de Cássia Ramos do Egito; MEDEIROS,Geovergue Rodrigues de; SILVA,Nelson Vieira da; BATISTA,Ana Sancha Malveira; ARAÚJO FILHO,José Teodórico de.
Abstract The aim of this work was to determine the sensory quality (flavour, odour, tenderness, juiciness and overall acceptability) and physicochemical characteristics of meat from Santa Inês lambs fed with diets containing guava agroindustrial by-product (GAB). Was used samples of the longissimus lumborum of 40 entire males with an average slaughter weight of 32.0 kg, after approximately 105 days in a feedlot. Animals were randomly placed into four treatments (10 replicates per treatment) and fed with different levels of GAB (0, 20, 40 and 60%). Among the attributes examined, only odour was not influenced by the GAB. Inclusion of 40% GAB in diets (in place of corn) produced meat which satisfied consumer demands in terms of fresh colour, although with...

Applications of electronic noses in meat analysis Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
GÓRSKA-HORCZYCZAK,Elżbieta; GUZEK,Dominika; MOLĘDA,Zuzanna; WOJTASIK-KALINOWSKA,Iwona; BRODOWSKA,Marta; WIERZBICKA,Agnieszka.
Abstract Electronic noses are devices able to characterize and differentiate the aroma profiles of various food, especially meat and meat products. During recent years e-noses have been widely used in food analysis and proved to provide a fast, simple, non-expensive and non-destructive method of food assessment and quality control. The aim of this study is to summarize the most important features of this analytic tool and to present basic fields and typical areas of e-nose use as well as most commonly used sensor types and patterns for e-nose design. Prospects for the future development of this technique are presented. Methods and research results presented in this manuscript may be a guideline for practical e-nose use.

Interactions mediated by predators in arthropod food webs Neotropical Entomology
Venzon,Madelaine; Pallini,Angelo; Janssen,Arne.
Studies on interactions among plants, herbivores and natural enemies are important for understanding population dynamics of species in food webs, but they are also important for the practice of pest control with natural enemies. Biological control programs heavily rely on the occurrence of trophic cascades, where the addition of one natural enemy causes a decrease of pest densities and an increase of plant biomass. However, when more that one natural enemy is used to control various pests in the same system, artificial food webs are created and simple tritrophic interactions change to more complicated ones. The occurrence of complex interactions and omnivory in these food webs may modify the sign and the strength of direct effects of natural enemies on...
