Willingness to pay for ecosystem conservation in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest: a choice modeling study Ecology and Society
Hjerpe, Evan E.; Conservation Economics Institute; evan@conservationecon.org; Hussain, Anwar; Forest Policy Center, Auburn University; Conservation Economics Institute; anwar@conservationecon.org.
Forest ecosystems contribute to human welfare in important ways, but because of the nonmarket nature of many of the goods and services produced, both markets and governments fail to optimize their production commensurate with their economic and ecological significance. Despite the recent proliferation of nonmarket environmental valuation in the literature, the incorporation of nonmarket values into public forest decision making has been limited by institutional and methodological barriers. To address this disconnect, we conducted a case study to quantify conservation values for the Tongass National Forest in a manner conducive for public forest planning. A choice experiment featuring proposed forest management alternatives with changes in critical...

Defining Old Growth for Fire-adapted Forests of the Western United States Ecology and Society
Kaufmann, Merrill R.; U.S. Forest Service (retired); mkaufmann@fs.fed.us; Binkley, Daniel; Colorado Forest Restoration Institute; dan@cnr.colostate.edu; Johnson, Marlin; U.S. Forest Service, Southwest Region; majohnson02@fs.fed.us; Stephens, Scott L.; University of California Berkeley; stephens@nature.berkeley.edu; Swetnam, Thomas W.; Lab of Tree Ring Research, University of Arizona; tswetnam@ltrr.arizona.edu.
There are varying definitions of old-growth forests because of differences in environment and differing fire influence across the Intermountain West. Two general types of forests reflect the role of fire: 1) forests shaped by natural changes in structure and species makeup—plant succession—that are driven by competitive differences among species and individual trees and by small-scale disturbances, and 2) forests where plant succession processes are disrupted by major biological disturbances (fire, insects, wind, or drought) extending across larger areas. Some case examples of old-growth forests where fire was historically frequent are used. The examples sketch out the typical biophysical settings, fire regime, natural disturbance...

Seedling density according to structure, dominance and understory cover in old-growth forest stands of the evergreen forest type in the coastal range of Chile RChHN
Donoso,Pablo J.; Nyland,Ralph D..
Securing timely regeneration is essential in maintaining the long-term ecological or silvicultural functions and values of forests. Its establishment, in turn, depends on many factors, including the structure and composition of the forest itself. Available information shows that seedling density varies greatly across the evergreen forest type in Chile. Yet stand variables that may affect the establishment of advance regeneration have not been studied. To that end, we evaluated seven stands of the coastal range, within the northern part of the evergreen forest type (39°14'-40°16' S). We documented understory cover, tree density and dominance, and stand structure, and used the information to assess their effects over seedling density. Findings indicate that...
