Parasitism behavior of three species of Eucoilinae (Hymenoptera: Cynipoidea: Figitidae) fruit fly parasitoids (Diptera) in Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Guimarães,Jorge A.; Zucchi,Roberto A..
Eucoilinae are larval endoparasitoids of cyclorrhaphous dipterous. Several species have been associated with frugivorous larvae (Tephritidae, Lonchaeidae and Drosophilidae). Some species of these dipterous cause serious damage to fruit crops. In order to minimize their damage, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) using biological control with hymenopteran parasitoids has been used. Studies on parasitism behavior can maximize the use of parasitoids in biological control programs. Thus, this paper had as objectives (1) to study the olfactory response of Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brèthes) and Dicerataspis grenadensis Ashmead to the volatile emitted by guava infested with fruit fly larvae and (2) to verify the behavioral sequence of location and evaluation of hosts by...

Color preference of Anastrepha obliqua (Diptera, Tephritidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
López-Guillén,Guillermo; Virgen,Armando; Rojas,Julio C..
The color preference of A. obliqua was evaluated in two-choice tests. The results showed that both sexes were attracted to wavelengths ranging from 340 nm to 670 nm, although the broad major peak of attraction occurred between 380 and 570 nm.

Improvement of a test-chamber for behavioral studies on adult females of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) (Diptera, Culicidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Cabrini,Isaías; Andrade,Carlos Fernando S..
A test-chamber (K&L-Chamber) made of cardboard and acrylic plastic, and consisting in four sections (A, B, C and D) was developed by Klowden & Lea (1978) for Aedes aegypti host-seeking behavior studies. Later, Foster & Lutes (1985) also used an identical chamber to successfully evaluate the efficacy of electronic repellers. It was described here a modified K&L-Chamber for behavioral studies of Ae. aegypti adults. The chamber was made in polystyrene, consisting of three sections (A, B and C) and using a human hand and a fluorescent lamp as stimulus to attract the mosquitoes. The suitability of the present test-chamber was validated assaying 80 replicates and releasing 10 Ae. aegypti females in each replicate. The females were...

The response of Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar, 1824) to the volatiles of its host banana plant (Musa paradisiaca cv. Prata) and conspecific adults was studied. In olfactometer, the attraction of males and females of C. sordidus to rhizome and pseudotem of the banana, fresh or rotting, was observed. The results suggested that the aggregation pheromone is produced by males and that it attracts both sexes, and that there is another pheromone produced by females which attracts males only. The results also suggest that the females are the first responsible for the aggregation of the species, but the male pheromone is mainly responsible for the mass aggregation. Nevertheless, the aggregation phenomenon is a consequence of the mutual action of both pheromones...

Impact of odor signáis on Cycloneda sanguínea (Coleóptera: Coccinellidae) searching behavior Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Heit,Guillermo E; Cohén,Graciela; Mareggiani,Graciela.
Volatile infochemicals generated by aphids, their host plants, or from the interaction between host plant and herbivore (herbivore-induced volatile plant compounds) are among the environmental stimuli used by predators to lócate prey The objective of this study was to evalúate the olfactometric response of the predator Cycloneda sanguínea (Coleóptera: Coccinellidae) to volatile infochemicals associated with the tomato plant, Lycopersicon esculentum Mili. (Solanaceae), and the aphid prey Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Predator behavior was evaluated in an airflow olfactometer at 24 ± 2°C with 65 ± 10% relative humidity and a 16 h photoperiod. Latency time and the number of visits to the active chamber where the odor source was located were...

Cattle tick differentiates between the odors of Holstein Friesian and Nelore cattle Ciência Rural
Borges,Lígia Miranda Ferreira; Duarte,Sabrina Castilho; Louly,Carla Cristina Braz.
Although Rhipicephalus microplus mainly parasitizes bovines, different breeds can have variable parasite burdens, with indian breeds being less susceptible to tick infestation than european breeds. These ticks use pasture questing to seek out their hosts in the open spaces of their grassland habitats. Using an olfactometer bioassay, where the larva could express questing, the authors aimed to answer whether R. microplus exhibit different behaviors depending on the bovine breed. Sixteen larvae were individually exposed to the odors of five holstein friesian cattle, five nelore cattle, hexane (negative control) and 2-nitrophenol (positive control). The highest questing responses were observed to 2-nitrophenol and holstein odors. The lowest response was...
