Contribution to the marine propeller hydrodynamic design for small boats in the Amazon region Acta Amazonica
FAVACHO,Breno Inglis; VAZ,Jerson Rogério Pinheiro; MESQUITA,André Luiz Amarante; LOPES,Fábio; MOREIRA,Antonio Luciano Seabra; SOEIRO,Newton Sure; ROCHA,Otávio Fernandes Lima da.
ABSTRACTIn the Amazon, river navigation is very important due to the length of navigable rivers and the lack of alternative road networks. Boats usually operate in unfavorable conditions, since there is no hydrodynamic relation among propellers, geometry, and the dimensions of the boat hull. Currently, there is no methodology for propeller hydrodynamic optimization with low computational cost and easy implementation in the region. The aim of this work was to develop a mathematical approach for marine propeller design applied to boats typically found on Amazon rivers. We developed an optimized formulation for the chord and pitch angle distributions, taking into account the classical model of Glauert. A theoretical analysis for the thrust and torque...

Optimization compressive strength biomass pellet from compost using Taguchi method CIGR Journal
Absalan, Ghafour; Kianmehr, Mohammad Hossein; Arabhosseini, Akbar; Kouravand, Shahriar.
Compression is important to prevent a deterioration in quality pellets for long term storage and the moisture content of the pellets must be reduced to or less. In this research the quality of pellet of compost was studied at air temperatures of 50, 60 and 70, air velocities of 0.5, 1, and 1.5 m/s, particle sizes of 16(1.18mm) and 10(2mm) and pellet diameters of 6 and 8 mm. The Taguchi quality engineering method was used to investigate the effects of parameters on compressive strength of pellet. An orthogonal array, signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed to analyze the effect of these compressive strength parameters. Thus, the optimal performance for the compressive strength of pellet was obtained at first level of factor...

State estimation and optimal long period clinical treatment of HIV seropositive patients Anais da ABC (AABC)
Grégio,Juliana M.; Caetano,Marco A.L.; Yoneyama,Takashi.
Optimal control theory provides a very interesting quantitative method that can be used to assist the decision making process in several areas of application, such as engineering, biology, economics and sociology. The main idea is to determine the values of the manipulated variables, such as drug doses, so that some cost function is minimized, subject to physical constraints. In this work, the cost function reflects the number of CD4+T cells, viral particles and the drug doses. It is worth noticing that high drug doses are related to more intense side-effects, apart from the impact on the actual cost of the treatment. In a previous paper by the authors, the LQR - Linear Quadratic Regulator approach was proposed for the computation of long period...

Methodological development of a quality index for agricultural operations, for corn cultivation using multi-criterion analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Lamparelli,Rubens A.C.; Dias,Hugo S..
One of the major problems in the Brazilian agriculture is related to the production loss in the field, which, due to many factors, is not being considered. This article has the objective to develop a methodology to identify a quality index which integrates some crop quality variables which are able to indicate how the crop is developing in terms of loss in the field. The results have showed that the strategy of multi-criterion analysis and Fuzzy logic proved to be important tools for the assessment and preparation of a quality index for corn production. The index proposed performed well in representing the quality of agricultural operations when compared with reality.

Optimal image quantization, perception and the median cut algorithm Anais da ABC (AABC)
MOTA,CICERO; GOMES,JONAS; CAVALCANTE,MARIA I. A..
We study the perceptual problem related to image quantization from an optimization point of view, using different metrics on the color space. A consequence of the results presented is that quantization using histogram equalization provides optimal perceptual results. This fact is well known and widely used but, to our knowledge, a proof has never appeared on the literature of image processing.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to optimize a maceration condition of cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.). A circumscribed central composite experimental design was applied in this work. Temperature and time were varied from 40-80 °C and 30-90 min, respectively. The three responses (i.e., extraction yield, cannabidiol content, and Δ9- tetrahydrocannabinol content) were predicted by computer software. The yield was high when cannabis was macerated using ethanol at high temperature and long duration time. While cannabidiol and Δ9- tetrahydrocannabinol content was high when macerating at a low heating temperature and short duration time. The optimal condition provided the simultaneous high of cannabidiol and Δ9- tetrahydrocannabinol content was 40 °C for 30 min....

Departures from the physical optimality in the bronchial tree of rats (Rattus norvegicus) Biol. Res.
CANALS M,MAURICIO; ATALA,CRISTIAN; OLIVARES,RICARDO; NOVOA,FRANCISCO F; ROSENMANN,MARIO.
We studied the departure from the physical optimality of the bronchial tree of rats using both i) the minimum volume and power and ii) the minimum surface and drag criteria, considering the bronchial junction as the unit study based on Zamir's model for vascular trees. Our results show deviations of the junctions of the bronchial tree from the expected optimums in the proximal airway that can be explained by both, the turbulent or transitional flow regime, and the airway's necessity to distribute its terminal branches in the alveolar surface filling the thoracic volume. The departures of the observed values at the optimum for the minimum volume and power were significantly different than the obtained departure values for the minimum surface and drag...

Power Flow Analysis and Self-recovery of Electrical Energy Distribution Network Using Artificial Neural Networks BABT
Avelar,Fabio da Silva; Fritzen,Paulo Cícero; Furucho,Mariana Antônia Aguiar.
ABSTRACT A computational model for self-recovery of electricity distribution network was developed to simulate it, emulated by the IEEE 123 node model. The electrical system considered has automatic switches capable of identifying a momentary failure in the line and finding the best reconfiguration for its reclosing. An artificial neural network (ANN), backpropagation, was used to classify the type of failure and determine the best reconfiguration of the distribution network. Initially, five power failure scenarios were simulated in certain different parts of the power grid, and power flow analysis via OpenDSS was performed. Next, the most suitable switching was observed within the shortest time interval to restore the power supply. With the purpose of...

Statistical Modelling and Optimization of Fermentation Medium for Lincomycin Production by Streptomyces lincolnensis Immobilized Cells BABT
Abdelwahed,Nayera A.M.; Gomaa,Eman Zakaria; Hassan,Amira A..
ABSTRACT Response surface methodology was used to optimize lincomycin production by Streptomyces lincolnensis NRRL ISP-5355 in submerged fermentation. Screening of fermentation medium components to find their relative effect on lincomycin production was done using Plackett-Burman design. Malt extract, dextrin, soluble starch and (NH4)2SO4 were the most significant nutrient influenced on lincomycin production. Central composite design was applied to determine optimal concentrations of these factors and the effect of their mutual interactions. The interaction between soluble starch and (NH4)2SO4 was found to enhance the production, whereas malt extract and dextrin exhibited an influence independent from the other two factors. Using this statistical...

Extraction of red cabbage anthocyanins: optimization of the operation conditions of the column process BABT
Xavier,Marcelo Fonseca; Lopes,Toni Jefferson; Quadri,Mara Gabriela Novy; Quadri,Marintho Bastos.
The aim of this work was to extract anthocyanins from the red cabbage. Batch studies under several extraction conditions indicated that acetic acid in aqueous solution (10% V/V) was the best solvent, used in the proportion of 0.25 g of red cabbage mL-1. At this condition, column assays were carried out to evaluate the influence of the ionic force, pH, solvent flow rate, recirculated volume of red cabbage juice and the mass of red cabbage. Results showed that the pH, recirculation and mass of red cabbage had statistically significant effects, where the optimum operation conditions found for the process were pH 2.3, recirculation volume of the solvent 0.83 L and mass of red cabbage 50 g.
