Influence of production and conservation conditions on some physical and chemical properties of blueberries CIGR Journal
Gonçalves, Christophe; Guiné, Raquel P.F.; Gonçalves, Fernando; Costa, Daniela.
This work studied the effect of production mode (organic versus conventional) and storage conditions on some physical and chemical properties of blueberry from different cultivars, namely Duke, Bluecrop, and Ozarkblue. The physical properties evaluated were caliber, color and texture and the chemical characteristics analyzed were moisture content, total soluble solids and acidity. Furthermore, the effect of storage on these properties was also evaluated. The results showed that blueberries cv. Duke were bigger, with a more intense coloration, and presented a harder and more elastic texture, when compared with the other cultivars at study. With respect to production mode it was found that the blueberries produced in organic farming were not so acid or sweet,...

Taxocenotic and biocenotic analysis over time of edaphic mesofauna in organic Vaccinium sp. plantations southern central Chile Agrociencia
Peredo-P.,Santiago F.; Barrera-S.,Claudia P.; Parada-Z.,Esperanza; Vega-C.,Marcela.
Soil functioning is determined by the diversity of organisms inhabiting the soil and their role in the edaphic ecosystem, and the variety of forms and functions of the roots of the plants where they live. Invertebrates are an integral part of soil and are important in determining the suitability of the soil for the sustainable production of healthy crops or trees. In Chile there are no studies on edaphic mesofauna in plantations subjected for a longer period to certified organic management. The aim of the present study was to analyze the taxocenotic and biocenotic similarities over time of taxa of edaphic mesofauna in a cranberry plantation (Vaccinium sp.) subjected to organic management practices in farms in Southern Central Chile (37° 28' S). In July...

Castro,Nilmar Eduardo Arbex de; Pinto,José Eduardo Brasil Pereira; Cardoso,Maria das Graças; Morais,Augusto Ramalho de; Bertolucci,Suzan Kelly V.; Silva,Fabiano Guimarães da; Delú Filho,Nelson.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the yield of calyxes of Hibiscus sabdariffa L, a medicinal plant, at four planting times in Lavras - MG. The treatments were four planting times (October 18th, November 15th, December 18th 2001 and January 15th 2002) and a harvest was proceeded when practically there were no developing calyxes, almost at the end of the plant cycle. The numbers of calyxes per plant, the fresh and dry biomasses of calyxes and quality were taken into account. It follows that planting time influenced yield per plant and the fresh and dry biomasses of calyxes, differing from each other by Tukey test at 5%. In October planting, there was a higher yield (2,522kg/ha) with a yield 5.24 as high relative to the planting of the month of...

Observing the observers: uncovering the role of values in research assessments of organic food systems Ecology and Society
Noe, Egon; Aarhus University; Egon.Noe@agrsci.dk.
Assessing the overall effects of organic food systems is important, but also a challenge because organic food systems cannot be fully assessed from one single research perspective. The aim of our research was to determine the role of values in assessments of organic food systems as a basis for discussing the implications of combining multiple perspectives in overall sustainability assessments of the food system. We explored how values were embedded in five research perspectives: (1) food science, (2) discourse analysis, (3) phenomenology, (4) neoclassical welfare economics, and (5) actor-network theory. Value has various meanings according to different scientific perspectives. A strategy for including and balancing different forms of knowledge in overall...

Freyer, Bernhard; University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU); bernhard.freyer@boku.ac.at; Bingen, Jim; Michigan State University, USA; bingen@msu.edu; Paxton, Rebecca; University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU); Rebecca.Paxton@boku.ac.at.
In a continuously expanding, globalizing, and industrializing organic market, organic consumers confront increasing complexity in organic product representation, labeling, and information that challenges how they build trust in organic products. We present a conceptual framework to analyze how consumers might build and practice trust in the organic agrifood chain. We asked specifically about the role of multicriteria assessment tools (MCATs) for trust building. We identified three consumer trust types: uninformed trust in labels (type 1); informed trust in extensive information, control, and certification (type 2); and informed and engaged trust in forms of close farmer–consumer relationships (type 3). Three concepts of...

Soil solarization for weed control in carrot PAB
MARENCO,RICARDO ANTONIO; LUSTOSA,DENISE CASTRO.
Soil solarization is a technique used for weed and plant disease control in regions with high levels of solar radiation. The effect of solarization (0, 3, 6, and 9 weeks) upon weed populations, carrot (Daucus carota L. cv. Brasília) yield and nematode infestation in carrot roots was studied in São Luís (2º35' S; 44º10' W), MA, Brazil, using transparent polyethylene films (100 and 150 mm of thickness). The maximum temperature at 5 cm of depth was about 10ºC warmer in solarized soil than in control plots. In the study 20 weed types were recorded. Solarization reduced weed biomass and density in about 50% of weed species, including Cyperus spp., Chamaecrista nictans var. paraguariensis (Chod & Hassl.) Irwin & Barneby, Marsypianthes chamaedrys...
