New hosts of Myrothecium spp. in Brazil and a preliminary in vitro assay of fungicides BJM
Quezado Duval,A.M.; Henz,G.P.; Paz-Lima,M.L.; Medeiros,A.R.; Miranda,B.E.C.; Pfenning,L.H.; Reis,A.
Myrothecium roridum and M. verrucaria are two plant pathogenic species causing foliar spots in a large number of cultivated plants. This paper aims to study the causal agents of foliar spots in vegetable crops (sweet pepper, tomato and cucumber), ornamental plants (Spathiphyllum wallisii, Solidago canadensis, Anthurium andreanum, Dieffenbachia amoena) and a solanaceous weed plant (Nicandra physaloides). Most of the isolates were identified as M. roridum; only the isolate 'Myr-02' from S. canadensis was identified as M. verrucaria. All the isolates were pathogenic to their original plant hosts and also to some other plants. Some fungicides were tested in vitro against an isolate of M. roridum and the mycelial growth recorded after seven days. Fungicides...

Construction of a molecular identification profile of new varieties of Nierembergia linariaefolia by anchored microsatellites Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Pérez de la Torre,Mariana C.; Escandón,Alejandro S..
The objective of the present work was to establish the molecular identification profile for six new varieties of Nierembergia linariaefolia to incorporate the fingerprint, as complementary information to the standard registration data. Total DNA was extracted from young leaves following the protocol of the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. Anchored microsatellites were used as molecular markers. The amplification reactions were carried out with seven primers. A total of 251 loci were detected, 98% of them were polymorphic. The average of polymorphic loci was 35 loci per primer and, 41 loci per genotype. Six out of the seven primers used discriminated all the individuals involved in the present study; consequently, it was possible to generate the molecular...

Production and Marketing of Organic Ornamentals. Developments in Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany Organic Eprints
Billmann, Bettina.
The importance of organic ornamental plants (cut flowers, pot- and bedding plants, herbaceous plants, ornamental herbs, trees and shrubs) is ranging on a very low level. But the common interest is growing. Since 1996 the first European meeting on organically grown ornamental plants took place in Switzerland more and more sellers offer these plants. As well the number of newspaper articles and events occupying this subject is growing.

Structural differences in wheat (Triticum aestivum), hemp (Cannabis sativa) and Mischanthus (Mischanthus ogiformis) affect the quality and stability of compost as growing medium Organic Eprints
Dresbøll, Dorte Bodin; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
Physical properties as well as process parameters were examined in three different composts based on plant residues. The wheat compost was a mixture of clover-grass and wheat straw in a ratio of 3:5, the Mischanthus compost was composed of the same materials and contained Mischanthus straw in addition in a ratio of 3:2.5:2, and the hemp compost was based on clover-grass, wheat and hemp straw also in a ratio of 3:2.5:2. The wheat and Mischanthus composts both had an initial C/N ratio of 26 and process parameters such as nitrogen losses and mineralisation pattern did not differ between the two compost types. The hemp compost had a much lower initial C/N ratio of 16 as the hemp straw was harvested fresh, resulting in higher losses and more mineralised...

Network "Research on Organic Vegetable Production" in Germany Organic Eprints
Billmann, Bettina.
From 2004 to 2009, in the frame of the Federal Program Organic Agriculture, the project ‘Network Research on Organic Vegetable Production’ was accomplished. The project was aimed at improving research methods and information flow between researchers, advisory services and growers. To achieve these objectives, several tools were developed in five sub-projects: The main result of the sub-project ‘Guidelines’ was the manual ‘Planung, Anlage und Auswertung von Versuchen im ökologischen Gemüsebau’ (Design, Implementation and Evaluation of Trials in Organic Vegetable Growing), which is a basic guideline to standardize trial results. In the sub-project ‘Trial Overview’ an extensive overview of the trials from 1994–2004 was compiled and is available at...

Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization and two levels of compost supply on nutrient uptake and flowering of pelargonium plants Organic Eprints
Perner, Henrike; Schwarz, Dietmar; Bruns, Christian; Mäder, Paul; George, Eckhard.
Two challenges frequently encountered in the production of ornamental plants in organic horticulture are: (1) the rate of mineralization of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) from organic fertilizers can be too slow to meet the high nutrient demand of young plants, and (2) the exclusive use of peat as a substrate for pot-based plant culture is discouraged in organic production systems. In this situation, the use of beneficial soil microorganisms in combination with high quality compost substrates can contribute to adequate plant growth and flower development. In this study, we examined possible alternatives to highly soluble fertilizers and pure peat substrates using pelargonium (Pelargonium peltatum L’Her.) as a test plant. Plants were grown on a peat-based...

Development of the Organic Ornamentals Sector Worldwide Organic Eprints
Billmann, Bettina.
The paper describes different and mainly innovative ways of production and marketing of organic flowers, perennials and potted herbs by way of examples from all over the world. Organic production of ornamentals ranges from the cultivation in small nurseries with direct marketing to large scale production with online-marketing or the selling of bunches in supermarkets. All factors considered, it is evident that the pioneer phase of ornamental cultivation consistently changes to professionalism.

Production of Organic Ornamentals in Germany – a Status Quo Analysis of the Industry Organic Eprints
Billmann, Bettina; Schaser, Jutta; Schlüter, Dietmar; Schorn, Wolfgang.
In the German Federal Organic Farming Scheme (BÖL) project “Organic production of ornamental plants and nursery trees – structure of the industry, development, problems and required policy initiatives” a qualitative and quantitative survey of certified organic and conventional / integrated nurseries was carried out. The aim was to assess the current status of production and marketing of organic ornamentals in Germany and to provide an overview of the general framework of this industry. The results show that organic production of ornamentals, trees and shrubs is technically feasible but still difficult. For further development this sector needs improvement of the basic conditions such as market structure, advisory services, subsidies and research activities

Wo kaufen Sie Blumen? Bioblumen führen noch ein Schattendasein Organic Eprints
Schaser, Jutta; Billmann, Bettina.

Kempkens, Karl; Billmann, Bettina.
