Artificial insemination mastery in red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, requires a first experimental step wOOng at getting basic biological data. Regarding males, a relation between optical density of the solution (OD) measured by spectrophotometry and sperm concentration (SC) has been established : OD O,161*SC + 0,119. Mean sperm concentration measured is 4,36.10 10 spz.mL-1. This study shows an influence of the solution of dilution on spermatozoa motility and its evolution during short term preservation. As far as females are concemed, the follow-up of final maturation through the observation of samples taken during reguIar strippings, seems to he a good technique to limit overripening and spontaneous liheration of ovules. Some artificial insemination trials... |

We observed structural changes in the follicles and uterus of heavy draft mares during estrus and examined the effect of a single injection of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog buserelin on ovulation and endocrine profiles. Twenty-two heavy draft mares were divided into a buserelin-treated group (n=8) and a control group (n=14). Mares were given an intramuscular injection of 40 µg buserelin when they presented signs of estrus to a teaser stallion, had ≥45 mm diameter follicles, and presented decreased uterine edema compared with the previous examination. The follicles and uterus were monitored using transrectal ultrasound imaging and measurement of blood levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), progesterone, and... |

The decrease in fertility and conception rates of high-producing dairy cows is one of the major negative impacts for today's producers. The recovery of ovarian activity postpartum is affected by the status of immunity, metabolism and reproduction and plays a critical role in subsequent fertility after parturition in the cow. In the present study we investigated the relationships between polymorphisms in genes relating to the above functions and the first postpartum ovulation as a marker of the recovery of ovarian function in the cow. In immune function related-factors, the occurrence of first postpartum ovulation within 3 weeks in the C/C genotypes of tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) exon (55.4%) and the A/G genotypes of TNFα promoter (55.4%) was... |

The aim of the present study was to examine the messenger RNA expressions of the endothelin and angiotensin systems during the periovulatory phase in gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH)-treated cows. Ovaries were collected by transvaginal ovariectomy (n=5 cows/group), and the follicles (n=5, one follicle/cow) were classified into the following groups: before GnRH administration (control, before LH surge), 3-5 h after GnRH (during LH surge), 10 h after GnRH; 20 h after GnRH, 25 h after GnRH (peri-ovulation), and early corpus luteum (CL) (Days 2-3). Expression of mRNA was investigated using quantitative real-time PCR. The expression of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) mRNA significantly decreased immediately after onset of the LH surge and remained at... |

The aim of the present in vivo study was to monitor real-time fluctuations of cortisol (Cr) in the wall of preovulatory follicles using a microdialysis system (MDS) implanted in the theca layer as well as changes in ovarian venous plasma (OVP) and jugular venous plasma (JVP). Seven cows were superovulated using FSH and prostaglandin F2α injections. Dialysis capillary membranes were surgically implanted into the theca layer of mature follicles and connected to a microdialysis system. Fractions of the perfusates were collected from Day -1 (Day 0=LH surge) to Day 3. No difference in the concentrations of Cr between JVP and OVP was detected throughout the experiment. Circulating concentrations of Cr ranged from 20 to 35 ng/ml 8 h after surgery in ovulatory and... |

This study was to investigate the localization and distribution of eosinophils (EOS) in the bovine oviduct throughout the estrous cycle. Histological studies revealed more abundant EOS in the infundibula of the oviducts ipsilateral to the preovulatory dominant follicle and the ovulated ovary. The number of EOS was higher in the infundibula of the oviducts ipsilateral to the ovulated ovary than those of the oviducts contralateral to the ovulated ovary. The infundibula of the oviducts ipsilateral to the preovulatory dominant follicle had higher number of EOS than those of the oviducts ipsilateral to the mid-cycle corpus luteum. The number of EOS in the isthmus, but not in the ampulla, was higher in the outer layers (tunica muscularis and tunica serosa) than... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the plasma concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), and the mRNA hepatic expression of IGF-I and of the growth hormone receptors GHR and GHR 1A, in postpartum beef cows. Four Angus and four crossbred (Angus x Nelore) postpartum suckled beef cows were used. Liver and blood samples were collected every 10 days, from calving to 40 days postpartum, for gene expression and for β-hydroxybutyrate and IGF-I assays, respectively. Samples for progesterone assay were collected every other day, from day 10 to 40 postpartum. Three cows ovulated before 40 days postpartum. IGF-I concentration was higher in Angus x Nelore than in Angus cows. There was no difference in the expression of GHR, GHR 1A and IGF-I... |

Reproductive capacity is controlled by a large number of factors such as season, social interactions and metabolic status. However, the influence of emotional reactivity on reproductive success has not been intensively investigated in farm animals. In this review, we define emotion reactivity and the expression of its inter individual variability named temperament. We briefly describe our protocol to measure temperament in sheep and discuss the heritability of temperament traits. Using the results obtained from our flock of sheep selected for calm or nervous temperament, we illustrate how this selection affects the reproductive biology from changing the inexperienced ewe's response to the male effect to improving lamb survival and ovulation rate. We... |

The aim of this study was to verify the efficacy of reusing intravaginal progesterone (P4) devices on the reproductive parameters in Santa Inês ewes. Females received intravaginal P4 devices for their first, second or third use for five days plus 300 IU eCG IM and 5mg dinoprost laterovulvar 24h before device removal. Blood was collected at different moments. Transrectal ultrasonography was performed from device removal to ovulation. Part of the ewes were submitted to artificial insemination by laparoscopy (IAL - n=55) with fresh semen, whereas the rest were bred by fertile rams (n=41). On the initial 18 h, ewes that received devices for the first time showed higher P4 concentrations (5.1±1.8 vs 3.5±1.4 vs 2.4±1.1 - P<0.05). However, after the first 48h... |

This study reported the effects of prostaglandin (PGF2a) administration 10 days apart on reproductive parameters of cyclic artificial inseminated (AI) nulliparous Alpine (n=9) and Saanen (n=9) goats. Animals received two doses of 22.5mg PGF2a 10 days apart. After 1st and 2nd PGF2a administrations, estrus was monitored at 12 h intervals, with a buck teaser. Plasma progesterone concentration (ng/mL) was determined from blood sampled on day 0 (1st PGF2a) and the following 5, 10 (2nd PGF2a), 15, 20, 25 and 30 days. After the onset of the second estrus, females were transrectally (5 MHz probe) scanned at 4 hour intervals until at least 8h after ovulation. Pregnancy was checked through transrectal ultrasound on days 20, 25, 30, 35 and 90 after insemination. All... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate hCG treatment on ovarian response and on pregnancy rate using a 9-day oestrus synchronization protocol in Santa Ines ewes. On a random oestrus cycle day, ewes received an intravaginal progesterone device (Primer-PR®, Tecnopec, Brazil). Nine days later (Day 9), 30µg of d-cloprostenol (Prolise®, Syntex, Argentina) and 250IU of eCG (Folligon®, Intervet, Brazil) were administered and the progesterone device was removed. This moment, the ewes were randomly assigned on two groups: Control Group and hCG Group. In the hCG Group, the ewes received 500IU of hCG (Vetecor®, Hertape-Calier, Spain) 24h after device removal. In the Control Group, the ewes did not receive any ovulation inductor. Control and hCG Groups ewes... |
