Structural responses of Ipomoea nil (L.) Roth 'Scarlet O'Hara' (Convolvulaceae) exposed to ozone Acta Botanica
Moura,Bárbara Bâesso; Souza,Sílvia Ribeiro de; Alves,Edenise Segala.
Troposphere ozone (O3) is an important photochemical pollutant due to its high reactivity and phytotoxicity. Plants can show microscopic damage caused by this gas before the detection of visible symptoms. The present study aimed to improve our knowledge concerning the effects of O3 on Ipomoea nil L. cv. Scarlet O'Hara leaves. Plants were exposed at a pollutant site in São Paulo city, with high levels of O3, and fumigation with O3 was also carried out. In plants exposed to the environment, without visible symptoms, hypersensitive response-like (HR-like) and protrusions in the cell walls was observed, indicating oxidative processes; in leaves with visible symptoms, there is epidermis breakdown and the palisade and spongy parenchyma collapse. Fumigation...

Changes in PEP Carboxylase, Rubisco and Rubisco activase mRNA levels from maize (Zea mays) exposed to a chronic ozone stress Biol. Res.
LEITAO,LOUIS; MAORET,JEAN-JOSÉ; BIOLLEY,JEAN-PHILIPPE.
We quantified the ozone impact on levels of Zea mays L. cv. Chambord mRNAs encoding C4-phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (C4-PEPc), ribulose-l,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase small and large subunits (Rubisco-SSU and Rubisco-LSU, respectively) and Rubisco activase (RCA) using real-time RT-PCR. Foliar pigment content, PEPc and Rubisco protein amounts were simultaneously determined. Two experiments were performed to study the ozone response of the 5th and the 10th leaf. For each experiment, three ozone concentrations were tested in open-top chambers: non-filtered air (NF, control) and non-filtered air containing 40 (+40) and 80 nL L-1 (+80) ozone. Regarding the 5th leaf, +40 atmosphere induced a loss in pigmentation, PEPc and Rubisco activase mRNAs....

Short-term leaf responses of Nicotiana tabacum 'Bel-W3' to ozone under the environmental conditions of São Paulo, SE - Brazil BABT
Souza,Silvia Ribeiro de; Sant'Anna,Silvia Maria Romano; Rinaldi,Mirian Cilene Spasiani; Domingos,Marisa.
The present study aimed to study if the intensity and precocity of short-term leaf responses of Nicotiana tabacum 'Bel-W3' depended on the daily atmospheric levels of ozone and/or daily meteorological conditions in a State Park located in the city of São Paulo, SE Brazil. From 16 September to 14 October 2002, three lots of six potted plants were exposed for fourteen days. Leaf necrosis, atmospheric ozone concentrations and meteorological parameters were daily measured. The average percentage of leaf necrosis ranged from 5% to 20%. A 4th degree polynomial model was proposed to explain daily progress of leaf necrosis on plants. The average ozone levels were increased from morning (1.3-39.2 ppbv) to the midday (1.6-52.0 ppbv) and decreased in the evening...

Ozone: an emerging technology for the seafood industry BABT
Gonçalves,Alex Augusto.
In recent years, increasing attention has been focused on the safety of foods, and in particular on the intervention methods to reduce and eliminate human pathogens from fresh product, especially fresh seafood. Traditional technology utilizes water with or without a sanitizing agent to wash fresh seafood. Chlorine is the most widely used sanitizing agent available for fresh product, but it has a limited effect in killing bacteria on seafood surfaces. An alternative treatment is being sought to improve food safety. Many research and industrial trials are underway to validate the use of ozone in the food industry. This article intends to show a clean technology to be applied in seafood industry and to show that many studies must be done to demonstrate the...

Anti-fungal potential of ozone against some dermatophytes BJM
Ouf,Salama A.; Moussa,Tarek A.; Abd-Elmegeed,Alshimaa M.; Eltahlawy,Samar R..
ABSTRACT Dermatophytes are classified in three genera, Epidermophyton, Microsporum and Trichophyton. They have the capacity to invade keratinized tissue to produce a cutaneous infection known as dermatophytoses. This investigation was performed to study the effect of gaseous ozone and ozonized oil on three specific properties of six different dermatophytes. These properties included sporulation, mycelia leakage of sugar and nutrients and the activity of their hydrolytic enzymes. Generally, ozonized oil was found to be more efficacious than gaseous ozone. Microsporum gypseum and Microsporum canis were the most susceptible, while Trichophyton interdigitale and T. mentagrophytes were relatively resistant. The study revealed a steady decline in spore...

The use of ozonized oil in the treatment of dermatophitosis caused by Microsporum canis in rabbits BJM
Daud,Fernanda Vasquez; Ueda,Suely Mitoi Ykko; Navarini,Alessandra; Mímica,Lycia Mara Jenné.
The ozone is effective against most microorganisms due to its high oxidant power. Low concentrations and short-term contact are sufficient to inactivate bacteria, mold, yeast, parasites, seaweeds, protozoa and fungi. Microsporum canis is an important agent of dermatophitosis in human and animal. The aim of the current study was to assess the efficacy of ozonized oil over Microsporum canis in rabbits. Eighteen male New Zealand white rabbits, weight ranging from 2 to 3.2 kg were depilated in the cranial dorso-lateral and right caudal, and cranial and left caudal regions. The regions were inoculated with Microsporum canis, excepting the right caudal region, and were denominated TM, O, OM and M, respectively. After seven days, the treatment of lesions in TM...

Alternative sanitization methods for minimally processed lettuce in comparison to sodium hypochlorite BJM
Bachelli,Mara Lígia Biazotto; Amaral,Rívia Darla Álvares; Benedetti,Benedito Carlos.
Lettuce is a leafy vegetable widely used in industry for minimally processed products, in which the step of sanitization is the crucial moment for ensuring a safe food for consumption. Chlorinated compounds, mainly sodium hypochlorite, are the most used in Brazil, but the formation of trihalomethanes from this sanitizer is a drawback. Then, the search for alternative methods to sodium hypochlorite has been emerging as a matter of great interest. The suitability of chlorine dioxide (60 mg L-1/10 min), peracetic acid (100 mg L-1/15 min) and ozonated water (1.2 mg L-1 /1 min) as alternative sanitizers to sodium hypochlorite (150 mg L-1 free chlorine/15 min) were evaluated. Minimally processed lettuce washed with tap water for 1 min was used as a control....

ALTERATION OF NITROGEN CYCLING BY AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES, AND ITS ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH CONSEQUENCES Gayana Botánica
Cleemput,Oswald van; Boeckx,Pascal.
The food demands of the increasing world population puts pressure on land use and N availability. In this paper an overview is given of the different N cycling processes affected by agricultural activities. Of the amount of N added to the soil, about half is removed from the field as harvested crop, while the remainder of the N is incorporated into soil organic matter or is lost to other parts of the environment. During the last decades there has been much research on environmental consequences of agricultural activities, mainly on emission of gaseous N compounds (NH3, NO, N2O and N2), but also on N leaching, runoff and erosion. Study of the factors controlling loss of N is complex because of their multiplicity and mutual interactions. More recently...

Processo de ozonização gasosa em milho e seu efeito na redução da micobiota e na degradação de aflatoxinas. Infoteca-e
FREITAS-SILVA, O.; CASTRO, I. M. de; TROBETE, F. M.; ASCHERI, J. L. R.; DIREITO, G. M.; PORTO, Y. D..

Effect of oxidation–reduction potential on performance of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in recirculating aquaculture systems ArchiMer
Li, Xian; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Liu, Ying; Triplet, Sebastien; Michaud, Luigi.
The direct impact of oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) on fish welfare and water quality in marine recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) is poorly documented. In this study, the effects of the fish size (S1, S2, S3) and ORP level (normal, four successive levels) on the performance of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were investigated. Three size fish were distributed into two RAS (RAS and RAS O3). Ozone was injected into RAS O3 to increase the ORP level. The ORP was stabilized to four successive levels: 260–300, 300–320, 320–350, and 300–320 mV in fish tanks during four periods (P1–4). At the last day of each period, the hematological parameters, plasma protein and mortality of sea bass were analyzed. Two-way ANOVA revealed that several...

Recherche et élimination des facteurs inhibiteurs de croissance dans les élevages piscicoles en circuit fermé ArchiMer
Leonard, Noemie.
Recirculation of the water of fish rearing systems requires a biological treatment based on the nitrifying activity of autotrophic bacteria. In parallel heterotrophic bacterial populations utilise the organic substrate, produced by the fish, to grow. Opposite to the autotrophic populations, the heterotrophic bacteria (1) have a quick growth and (2) might contain fish pathogenic strains. The main aim was to characterise the heterotrophic bacteria populations ?.nd to understand (1) which parameters do control the dynamics of their populations and (2) their influence on the quality of the recirculating water. In a rearing system, the heterotrophic bacterial populations are stable in number and in genus, for a given operating mode. The bacteria are either...
