Adesida,Solayide A.; Abioye,Olusegun A.; Bamiro,Babajide S.; Brai,Bartholomew I.C.; Smith,Stella I.; Amisu,Kehinde O.; Ehichioya,Deborah U.; Ogunsola,Folasade T.; Coker,Akitoye O..
Staphylococcus aureus infections are growing problems worldwide with important implications in hospitals. The organism is normally present in the nasal vestibule of about 35% of apparently healthy individuals and its carriage varies between different ethnic and age groups. Staphylococcal nasal carriage among health workers is particularly important to establish new clones and track origin of infections during outbreak situations. To determine the carriage rate and compare the pulsed field gel patterns of the strains, nasal swabs were collected from 185 medical students in a teaching hospital in Lagos, Nigeria. Isolates of S. aureus were tested for heamolysin production, methicillin sensitivity and Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) was performed. The...

Carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa outbreak in an intensive care unit of a teaching hospital BJID
Gales,Ana C.; Torres,Patrícia L.; Vilarinho,Dominique S. O.; Melo,Renata S.; Silva,Claudinéia F. L.; Cereda,Rosângela F..
The genetic similarity of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated in the Hospital Universitário São Francisco, Bragança Paulista, São Paulo, Brasil, was evaluated by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). A unique clone was detected among 5 of 7 isolates, suggesting that cross-contamination might have played a role in the spread of carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa strains. Interestingly, a similar PFGE pattern was encountered in a P. aeruginosa strain isolated from Hospital São Paulo that was used as a PFGE control.

Lilenbaum,Walter; Kremer,Frederico; Ristow,Paula; Dellagostin,Odir; Bourhy,Pascale; Hartskeerl,Rudy; Vasconcellos,Silvio.
Two Leptospira sp. isolates were obtained by the first time from goats in Brazil and characterized by sequencing rrs, rpoB and secY genes, PFGE and typing with monoclonal antibodies. Both isolates are identical and belong to Leptospira santarosai. Analysis of the rrs and the rpoB genes sequences revealed 100% identity between the goat isolates and the Bananal reference strain. When secY sequences of the two isolates were compared to each other, it was observed that they had identical sequences. However, when compared to that of the Bananal reference strain, there were 15 mismatches along the 549 bp secY sequence. In conclusion, molecular methods are increasingly useful for the characterization of leptospires and allowed to identify those isolates of...

Abstract Cholera continues to be a serious public health issue in developing countries. We analyzed the epidemiological data of cholera from 1976 to 2013 in Shandong Province, an eastern coastal area of China. A total of 250 Vibrio cholerae isolates were selected for PCR analysis of virulence genes and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The analysis of the virulence genes showed that the positive rates for tcpA and tcpI were the highest among strains from the southwest region, which had the highest incidence rate of cholera. Low positive rates for tcpA, tcpI and ctxAB among isolates from after 2000 may be an influencing factor contributing to the contemporary decline in cholera incidence rates. Spatiotemporal serotype shifts (Ogawa, Inaba, Ogawa,...
