Ceftiofur-loaded PHBV microparticles: A potential formulation for a long-acting antibiotic to treat animal infections Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Vilos,Cristian; Constandil,Luis; Herrera,Natalia; Solar,Paula; Escobar-Fica,Jorge; Velásquez,Luis Alberto.
Background: The infectious diseases in the livestock breeding industry represent a significant drawback that generates substantial economic loss and have led to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. The formulation of polymeric microparticles loaded with antibiotics for veterinary use can: reduce the number of required doses; protect the drug from inactivation; and maintain a sustained-release of the antibiotic drug at effective levels. Accomplishing all of these goals would have a significant economic and animal health impact on the livestock breeding industry. Results: In this work, we formulated ceftiofur-loaded PHBV microparticles (PHBV-CEF) with a spherical shape, a smooth surface and diameter sizes between 1.65 and 2.37 μm. The...

Superparamagnetic Poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3 hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) nanoparticles for biomedical applications Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Vilos,Cristian; Gutiérrez,Marlen; Escobar,Roberto A; Morales,Francisco; Denardin,Juliano C; Velasquez,Luis; Altbir,Dora.
Background: The progress in material science and the recent advances in biodegradable/biocompatible polymers and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles have led to develop innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for diseases based on multifunctional nanoparticles, which include contrast medium for magnetic resonance imaging, agent for hyperthermia and nanocarriers for targeted drug delivery. The aim of this work is to synthesize and characterize superparamagnetic iron oxide (magnetite), and to encapsulate them into poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) nanoparticles for biomedical applications. Results: The magnetite nanoparticles were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and exhibited a size of 22.3 ± 8.8 nm measured by transmission electron...

Natural Degradation and Biodegradation of Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate-co-3-Hydroxyvalerate) in Liquid and Solid Marine Environments ArchiMer
Deroine, Morgan; Cesar, Guy; Le Duigou, Antoine; Davies, Peter; Bruzaud, Stephane.
In this study, natural degradation and biodegradation of poly(3-hydroxybuyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) films were followed in different marine environments. First of all, ageing of PHBV films was investigated in natural seawater for 180 days and degradation was followed by means of weight loss measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry and steric exclusion chromatography. In a second part, biodegradation tests were performed on PHBV powder, by following carbon dioxide (CO2) release(,) to highlight the PHBV bioassimilation of marine microorganisms. Three different marine environments were considered for biodegradation tests: a solid inoculum with foreshore sand, a solid-liquid inoculum with sand and seawater and...

Characterization of progesterone loaded biodegradable blend polymeric nanoparticles Ciência Rural
Leimann,Fernanda Vitória; Biz,Maiara Heloisa; Kaufmann,Karine Cristine; Maia,Wallace José; Honçalves,Odinei Hess; Cardozo Filho,Lucio; Sayer,Claudia; Araújo,Pedro Henrique Hermes de.
ABSTRACT: The encapsulation of progesterone in poly (hydroxybutirate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL), poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) nanoparticles and PHBV/PCL and PHBV/PLLA blend nanoparticles was investigated in this research. Nanoparticles were produced by miniemulsion/solvent evaporation technique with lecithin as surfactant and were characterized regarding to z-average diameter (Dz) and polydispersity (PDI), progesterone recovery yield and encapsulation efficiency. Possible interactions between progesterone and the polymer matrices were investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). High recoveries (up to 102.43±1.80% for the PHBV/PLLA blend) and encapsulation efficiencies (up to 99.53±0.04% for PCL) were achieved...
