Diversity and aspects of the ecology of social wasps (Vespidae, Polistinae) in Central Amazonian "terra firme" forest Rev. Bras. entomol.
Somavilla,Alexandre; Oliveira,Marcio Luiz de; Silveira,Orlando Tobias.
Diversity and aspects of the ecology of social wasps (Vespidae, Polistinae) in Central Amazonian "terra firme" forest. The knowledge of social wasp richness and biology in the Amazonian region is considered insufficient. Although the Amazonas state is the largest in the region, until now only two brief surveys were conducted there. Considering that the systematic inventory of an area is the first step towards its conservation and wise use, this study presents faunal data on social wasp diversity in a 25 km² area of "terra firme" (upland forest) at the Ducke Reserve, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Wasps were collected in the understory, following a protocol of three collectors walking along 60 trails 1,000 m in extension for 16 days between August and October...

Predation of an American fruit-eating bat (Artibeus sp.) by an Amazon tree boa (Corallus hortulanus) in the northern Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
CARVALHO,William Douglas de; SILVESTRE,Saulo Meneses; MUSTIN,Karen; HILÁRIO,Renato Richard; TOLEDO,José Júlio de.
ABSTRACT We report an observation of predation by an Amazon tree boa, Corallus hortulanus, on an American fruit-eating bat, Artibeus sp., in an area of seasonal forest close to a small stream in the northern Brazilian Amazon. While bats appear to be one of the main food items of C. hortulanus, our observation is only the fourth such event to be recorded in the Brazilian Amazon. The Artibeus sp. individual was observed making distress (agony) calls continuously over a period of three hours, much longer than recorded on previous observations. Records of this type are important to further our knowledge on bat predators, and the defensive behavior of bats.

Species diversity, community structure and ecological traits of trees in an upper montane forest, southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Sühs,Rafael Barbizan; Hoeltgebaum,Marcia Patricia; Nuernberg-Silva,Anelise; Fiaschi,Pedro; Neckel-Oliveira,Selvino; Peroni,Nivaldo.
ABSTRACT Upper montane ecosystems in Brazil are little known, and their structural and functional aspects poorly understood. Our goals were to describe tree species diversity and community structure, and to characterize tree species in relation to their ecological traits, phytogeographic history and conservation status in an upper montane araucaria forest remnant. A total of 26 species belonging to 18 families were found in a 1-hectare permanent plot. The tree community mainly comprised trees with diameters of less than 20 cm and heights of between 6.5 and 9.5 m. Drimys angustifolia and Myrceugenia regnelliana had the highest importance values. Most species were shade tolerant while most individuals were pioneers. Most species and individuals presented...

Biodiversity of aquatic environments in a peri-urban Atlantic Forest protected remnant: a checklist Biota Neotropica
Magalhães,Karine Matos; Lima,Maria Cecília Santana de; Santos,Ednilza Maranhão; Correia,Jozélia Maria de Sousa; Silva,Ana Carolina Borges Lins e.
Abstract: We present a checklist for the aquatic biodiversity from two reservoirs within a PPBio (Biodiversity Research Program) site in a peri-urban forest fragment, the Dois Irmãos State Park (PEDI), in Pernambuco, Brazil. We obtained the data via extensive field collection and information from a specialized literature survey. We recorded 397 species in 156 families; the animal was the most abundant group (140 species) followed by fungi taxa (103), periphyton (69), aquatic macrophytes (44), and terrestrial plants in flooded areas (41). This review reflects different sample efforts toward selected groups and allows the definition of a long-term protocol for guiding new research based on the identified knowledge gaps revealed. Future ecological research...
