Re-evaluation of the Cancridae Latreille, 1802 (Decapoda: Brachyura) including three new genera and three new species Naturalis
Schweitzer, Carrie E.; Feldmann, Rodney M..
New fossils referable to the Cancridae Latreille, 1802 extend the known stratigraphic range of the family into the middle Eocene and the geographic range into South America. Each genus within the family has been reevaluated within the context of the new material. A suite of diagnostic characters for each cancrid genus makes it possible to assign both extant and fossil specimens to genera and the two cancrid subfamilies, the Cancrinae Latreille, 1802, and Lobocarcininae Beurlen, 1930, based solely upon dorsal carapace morphology. Cheliped morphology is useful in assigning genera to the family but is significantly less useful at the subfamily and generic level. Each of the four subgenera sensu Nations (1975), Cancer Linnaeus, 1758, Glebocarcinus Nations,...

Historical biogeography of Western Palaearctic pelobatid and pelodytid frogs: a molecular phylogenetic perspective Naturalis
Veith, M.; Fromhage, L.; Kosuch, J.; Vences, M..
Spadefoot toads (Pelobates) and Parsley frogs (Pelodytes) are an enigmatic group of Western Palaearctic anurans. In the genus Pelobates, a fossorial lifestyle has enforced a conserved bauplan that masks their intraspecific evolutionary history. We used partial sequences of the mitochondrial 16S and 12S rRNA genes to infer a paleobiogeographic scenario of speciation events in these two anuran genera. Based on two alternative, mutually exclusive calibrations of the Iberian-African split within Pelobates (Pb. cultripes and Pb. varaldii), the disjunction of the Betic Cordillera ca. 14-16 million years ago (mya), and the end of the Messinian Salinity crisis 5.33 mya, we inferred alternative scenarios for species evolution within both genera applying...

Isopodes aselloïdes stygobies d’Espagne, IV – Stenasellidae: taxonomie, histoire évolutive et biogéographie Naturalis
Magniez, Guy.
The entire family Stenasellidae Dudich, 1924 is composed of ancient stygobitic strains sharing a thalassoid and thermophilic origin. Its presence in Europe is dependent on two factors, the permanent existence of emerged continental shields during long geological periods (at least Tertiary + Quaternary), and its conservation in favourable areas during the different glacial crises. The iberian peninsula seems to have been the most suitable european region for the survival of this stygofauna. Some 119 samples from 116 different localities -scattered over 19 Spanish provinces- have been studied. All aquitanian and iberian stenasellids belong to the traditional genus Stenasellus Dollfus, 1897. We must notice that the stenasellids seem to be absent in the betic...

The Dakoticancridae (Decapoda, Brachyura) from the Late Cretaceous of North America and Mexico Naturalis
Bishop, G.A.; Feldmann, R.M.; Vega, F..
The podotrematous crab family Dakoticancridae includes four genera: Dakoticancer Rathbun, Tetracarcinus Weller, Avitelmessus Rathbun, and Seorsus Bishop, all known solely from the Late Cretaceous of North America. Lathelicocarcinus Bishop, originally referred to the family, must be reassigned. Fine details of anatomy, preserved on specimens of D. overanus Rathbun and A. grapsoideus Rathbun, permit description of genital openings and interpretation of functional morphology of appendages. Although one species, D. australis Rathbun, has been found associated with burrow structures, all were probably vagrant epifaunal animals on fine- to medium-grained siliciclastic substrata. Food was probably obtained by generalized low-level predation and scavenging....

Paleobiogeography and taxonomy of the genus Concholepas (Lamarck, 1801): a review and new evidences RChHN
CÁRDENAS,LEYLA; VIARD,FRÉDÉRIQUE; CASTILLA,JUAN CARLOS.
The muricid gastropod Concholepas concholepas, known in Chile as 'loco', is an important component of intertidal and shallow subtidal communities, and is one of the main invertebrates targeted by small-scale fishers (divers) in Chile. Because of its ecological importance and economical value, numerous studies have been conducted to describe its life history, ecology and to understand population dynamics, fishery and management. However, little effort has been done to address the causal factor (s) behind its current geographic distribution and moreover little is known about the past distribution of the different species in the genus. In this paper, first we review the paleobiogeography, historical relationships, taxonomy and geographical distribution of...

Disjoint geographical distribution of intertidal and nearshore benthic invertebrates in the Southern Hemisphere RChHN
CASTILLA,JUAN C; GUIÑEZ,RICARDO.
Biogeographical explanations for the extant and paleo disjoint geographical distribution in the southern hemisphere of five species of nearshore marine benthic invertebrates: Gaimardia trapesina, Ostrea chilensis, Pyura stolonifera taxonomic complex, Aulacomya ater and Concholepas concholepas, showing distinctive reproductive strategies and early life history characteristics are reviewed and analyzed. Through the use of published and new information we contrasted the following hypotheses: a) vicariance-historical process, b) epiplanktonic larval dispersal, c) juvenile/adult dispersal through rafting and d) planned or accidental anthropogenic dispersal mechanisms. The juvenile/adult transoceanic dispersal hypothesis by rafting was the only one impossible to...

Note on the paleobiogeography of Compsognathidae (Dinosauria: Theropoda) and its paleoecological implications Anais da ABC (AABC)
SALES,MARCOS A.F.; CASCON,PAULO; SCHULTZ,CESAR L..
The paleobiogeography of the theropod clade Compsognathidae is here reaccessed in order to test the hypothesis of this taxon being adapted specifically to inhabit semi-arid environments. Data about localities where these fossils were collected and their paleoenvironments were gathered from the literature. Compsognathids seem to be found especially in sedimentary deposits known as Fossil Lagerstätten, which were formed under a set of specific conditions that allowed the preservation of the fragile bone remains of these animals. This bias limits an accurate analysis of the historical and/or ecological paleobiogeography of this taxon. Actually, it is possible that compsognathids had an almost worldwide distribution during the Mesozoic Era. Their occurrence in...

Mesozoic dinosaurs from Brazil and their biogeographic implications Anais da ABC (AABC)
Bittencourt,Jonathas S.; Langer,Max C..
The record of dinosaur body-fossils in the Brazilian Mesozoic is restricted to the Triassic of Rio Grande do Sul and Cretaceous of various parts of the country. This includes 21 named species, two of which were regarded as nomina dubia, and 19 consensually assigned to Dinosauria. Additional eight supraspecific taxa have been identified based on fragmentary specimens and numerous dinosaur footprints known in Brazil. In fact, most Brazilian specimens related to dinosaurs are composed of isolated teeth and vertebrae. Despite the increase of fieldwork during the last decade, there are still no dinosaur body-fossils of Jurassic age and the evidence of ornithischians in Brazil is very limited. Dinosaur faunas from this country are generally correlated with those...
