Vegetational changes during the last millennium inferred from a palynological record from the Bananal Island, Tocantins, Brazil Acta Amazonica
MENDES,Laís Aguiar da Silveira; PIRES,Etiene Fabbrin; MENESES,Maria Ecilene Nunes da Silva; BEHLING,Hermann.
The Bananal Island is regarded the largest fluvial island in the world, bounded by Araguaia and Javaés rivers, being located in southwest of Tocantins. The objectives of this work were to provide information about the vegetational changes that occurred at the Bananal Island, in order to contribute to the understanding the dynamics of past and current savanna and areas of ecotones with forests. Thus, a sedimentary core collected from a small lake at the Bananal Island plain was submitted to pollen and radiocarbon dating analyses. The results showed that the last millennium was dominated by forest reflecting a wet climate. At the beginning of the record (920-770 yr cal BP) the wet climate and high rainfall produced flooding during long rainy seasons that...

Complex sporoderm structure in bryophyte spores: a palynological study of Erpodiaceae Broth. Acta Botanica
Luizi-Ponzo,Andrea Pereira; Silva-e-Costa,Juliana da Costa.
ABSTRACT Palynological studies of bryophytes are critical for evaluating the taxonomic relevance of their spores. They also provide important support to paleoecological investigations that, usually, treat bryophytes as a whole, which does not permit the evaluation of specific functional traits of a special taxonomic unit. The present study investigated the morphology and ultrastructure of spores of five species of Erpodiaceae (Bryophyta), and assessed the implications for taxonomy and the recognition of spores of past records. Erpodiaceae includes corticolous and saxicolous plants that are widely distributed throughout tropical and temperate regions. The spores were found to be isomorphic and apolar with a subcircular amb, granulate, inaperturate. The...

Morphological characterization of pollen grains of Brazilian species of Bombacoideae (Malvaceae s.l.) Acta Botanica
Saba,Marileide Dias; Esteves,Gerleni Lopes; Santos,Valdira de Jesus; Santos,Francisco de Assis Ribeiro dos.
ABSTRACT The pollen grains of 15 species belonging to five genera (Ceiba Mill., Eriotheca Schott & Endl., Pachira Aubl., Pseudobombax Dugand, and Rhodognaphalopsis A. Robyns) of the subfamily Bombacoideae (Malvaceae s.l.) were acetolysed, measured, described and photomicrographed under light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy, in order to characterize the pollen morphology of species of the subfamily occurring in Brazil. The pollen characters studied were size, shape, exine constitution, and apertural type. Pollen grains were medium to large-sized and isopolar with a (sub)circular and (sub)triangular amb with flat, convex or concave sides; oblate to suboblate; 3(-4)-colp(or)ate or 4-5(-6)-colporate, planaperturate,...

Pollen analysis of the post-emergence residue of Melipona (Melikerria) interrupta Latreille (Hymenoptera: Apidae) bred in the central Amazon region Acta Botanica
Ferreira,Marcos Gonçalves; Absy,Maria Lúcia.
We applied an "adapted" protocol for collecting and processing pollen grains in the pollen analysis of the post-emergence residue of Melipona (Melikerria) interrupta Latreille. The study was conducted at the Sant'Ana honey farm, located on the banks of the Solimões River, in the municipality of Manacapuru, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, where a colony was monitored in October and November 2010. From that colony, 10 samples of post-emergence residue were collected. Unlike in the acetolysis method, there was no need to expose pollen grains to an acidic medium, because pollen loses its content during the larval digestive process. We identified 32 pollen types, from 19 botanical families, plus three undetermined pollen types. The most representative family...

Spores of Plagiochila (Dumort.) Dumort.: the taxonomic relevance of morphology and ultrastructure Acta Botanica
Silva-e-Costa,Juliana da Costa; Luizi-Ponzo,Andrea Pereira.
ABSTRACT Plagiochilaceae is a family of leafy liverworts that are distributed worldwide. It is of great importance due to its taxonomic and ecological implications among bryophytes. Most species of the family belong to the genus Plagiochila, but there is no consensus regarding its infrageneric circumscription. There have been few palynological studies involving Plagiochilaceae and Plagiochila. Here, we describe the spore morphology of seventeen species of Plagiochila and discuss the taxonomic value of palynological characters for these taxa. The spores were processed by standard palynological techniques and analyzed using light and electron microscopy. The spores were found to be apolar, spheroidal, released monads that vary in size from 13µm to 58µm...

Pollen morphology of Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) in Iran Acta Botanica
Shabestari,Elaheh Sadat Bagheri; Attar,Farideh; Riahi,Hosein; Sheidai,Masoud.
The genus Centaurea L. is one of the largest genera in the family Asteraceae. The number of taxa included in this genus ranges from 500 to 600 worldwide. Iran is one of the major centers of diversity for this genus. Pollen morphology has proved useful in the systematics of Asteraceae, as well as in that of some of its genera and species. The pollen morphology of 19 taxa of the genus Centaurea was investigated in detail by light and scanning electron microscopy. Examination under light microscopy showed pollen grains to be tricolporate, isopolar, radially symmetrical, oblate spheroidal, prolate spheroidal, subprolate, tectum perforate and scabrate. Based on the exine ornamentation observed under scanning electron microscopy, we identified two types of...

The presence of Fabaceae in the pollen profile of propolis produced in northeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Avelino,Luciano Oliveira; Santos,Francisco de Assis Ribeiro dos.
ABSTRACT Propolis is a resin-like substance composed mainly of resin, wax, essential oils, pollen grains and specific plant parts collected by the honeybee Apis mellifera, which mixes them with fluids they secrete. The components and chemical properties of propolis vary among regions. Therefore, in order assess variation in the botanical composition of propolis, 26 samples of propolis (brown, red, and green) produced throughout northeastern Brazil were analyzed by acetolysis specifically adapted for propolis. In total, 196 pollen types were recorded, representing 123 genera and 47 families, with types of Fabaceae and Rubiaceae being present in 100 % of the samples. Fabaceae was the richest group with 49 pollen types, followed by Malvaceae (10 types),...

Palynology of Amphidium Schimp. (Amphidiaceae M. Stech): can spore morphology circumscribe the genus? Acta Botanica
Passarella,Marcella de Almeida; Luizi-Ponzo,Andrea Pereira.
ABSTRACT Amphidium Schimp. is characterized by cushion-forming erect primary stems, linear-lanceolate leaves, and gymnostome capsules. The phylogenetic position of Amphidium is uncertain, with the genus having been variously included in Zygodontaceae Schimp., Rhabdoweisiaceae Limpr., Orthotrichaceae Arn. and Amphidiaceae M. Stech. A palynological investigation was performed of the three species of the genus that occur in the Americas: Amphidium lapponicum (Hedw.) Schimp., Amphidium mougeotii (Bruch & Schimp.) Schimp., and Amphidium tortuosum (Hornsch.) Cufod. Spores were observed and measured for greatest diameter under light microscopy both before and after acetolysis. Pollen morphology of selected species of the subfamily Bombacoideae (Malvaceae sensu lato) Acta Botanica
Abreu,Vanessa Holanda Righetti de; Mendonça,Claudia Barbieri Ferreira; Gonçalves-Esteves,Vania.
We analyzed the pollen grains of 11 species within the subfamily Bombacoideae. The pollen grains were acetolyzed, after which they were analyzed and photographed under light microscopy. Unacetolyzed pollen grains were analyzed and photomicrographed under scanning electron microscopy. We studied pollen characters such as shape, size, exine ornamentation and aperture type. The species were separated by a pollen key, which considers the presence or absence of "calotte" in the pollen grains. This attribute separated Ceiba and Eriotheca from the other genera. Some species are differentiated by specific characters: in Bombacopsis glabra and B. stenopetala, the sexine is rugulate or "vermiculate" with isolated pilate elements; in B. calophylla, the pollen grains...

Spore diversity among species of Blechnaceae in the Atlantic Forest Acta Botanica
Silva,Dilma Melo da; Sylvestre,Lana da Silva; Mendonça,Cláudia Barbieri Ferreira; Gonçalves-Esteves,Vania.
ABSTRACT The palynological diversity of Blechnaceae in the Atlantic Forest was investigated. While the monophyletic family belongs to the group of leptosporangiate ferns, a new classification proposed by recent phylogenetic study reorganizes the family and adds new genera. To expand palynological knowledge of the group, the spore morphology of 23 species and a hybrid, distributed among 10 genera, was described. Material from herbarium collections were submitted to acetolysis and mounted on slides, with subsequent statistical analysis of spore measurements. Photomicrographs of the material were taken under both light and scanning electron microscopy. Perine ornamentation varied among psilate, rugulate and scabrate; granules and gemmae were present along...

Plant succession in a forest on the Lower Northeast Slope of Serra Geral, Rio Grande do Sul, and Holocene palaeoenvironments, Southern Brazil Acta Botanica
Leal,Márcia Grala; Lorscheitter,Maria Luisa.
The study of plant succession provides information on vegetation dynamics of a region and, therefore, improves our understanding of the natural trends of present ecosystems. With this objective, plant succession based on palynology of a sediment profile in a swamp forest was studied on the Lower Northeast Slope of Serra Geral, Rio Grande do Sul. Samples were treated with HCl, HF, KOH and acetolysis; slides were mounted in glycerol-jelly. For each sample a minimum of 500 grains of pollen + pteridophyte and bryophyte spores was counted and other palynomorphs were counted in parallel. Tilia and Tilia Graph software were used to construct percentage and concentration diagrams, with three 14C datings. The results show a local water reservoir in the beginning of...
