Challenges and Prospects in Ocean Circulation Models ArchiMer
Fox-kemper, Baylor; Adcroft, Alistair; Boening, Claus W.; Chassignet, Eric P.; Curchitser, Enrique; Danabasoglu, Gokhan; Eden, Carsten; England, Matthew H.; Gerdes, Ruediger; Greatbatch, Richard J.; Griffies, Stephen M.; Hallberg, Robert W.; Hanert, Emmanuel; Heimbach, Patrick; Hewitt, Helene T.; Hill, Christopher N.; Komuro, Yoshiki; Legg, Sonya; Le Sommer, Julien; Masina, Simona; Marsland, Simon J.; Penny, Stephen G.; Qiao, Fangli; Ringler, Todd D.; Treguier, Anne-marie; Tsujino, Hiroyuki; Uotila, Petteri; Yeager, Stephen G..
We revisit the challenges and prospects for ocean circulation models following Griffies et al. (2010). Over the past decade, ocean circulation models evolved through improved understanding, numerics, spatial discretization, grid configurations, parameterizations, data assimilation, environmental monitoring, and process-level observations and modeling. Important large scale applications over the last decade are simulations of the Southern Ocean, the Meridional Overturning Circulation and its variability, and regional sea level change. Submesoscale variability is now routinely resolved in process models and permitted in a few global models, and submesoscale effects are parameterized in most global models. The scales where nonhydrostatic effects become...

A parameterization of local and remote tidal mixing ArchiMer
Lavergne, C.; Vic, Clement; Madec, G; Roquet, F.; Waterhouse, A. F.; Whalen, C. B.; Cuypers, Y.; Bouruet‐aubertot, P.; Ferron, Bruno; Hibiya, T..
Vertical mixing is often regarded as the Achilles' heel of ocean models. In particular, few models include a comprehensive and energy‐constrained parameterization of mixing by internal ocean tides. Here, we present an energy‐conserving mixing scheme which accounts for the local breaking of high‐mode internal tides and the distant dissipation of low‐mode internal tides. The scheme relies on four static two‐dimensional maps of internal tide dissipation, constructed using mode‐by‐mode Lagrangian tracking of energy beams from sources to sinks. Each map is associated with a distinct dissipative process and a corresponding vertical structure. Applied to an observational climatology of stratification, the scheme produces a global three‐dimensional map of...

Contrasted turbulence intensities in the Indonesian Throughflow: a challenge for parameterizing energy dissipation rate ArchiMer
Bouruet-aubertot, Pascale; Cuypers, Yannis; Ferron, Bruno; Dausse, Denis; Menage, Olivier; Atmadipoera, Agus; Jaya, Indra.
Microstructure measurements were performed along two sections through the Halmahera Sea and the Ombai Strait and at a station in the deep Banda Sea. Contrasting dissipation rates (𝜖) and vertical eddy diffusivities (K z ) were obtained with depth-averaged ranges of ∼[9×10−10−10−5] W kg− 1 and of ∼[1×10−5−2×10−3] m2 s− 1, respectively. Similarly, turbulence intensity, I=ϵ/(νN2) with ν the kinematic viscosity and N the buoyancy frequency, was found to vary seven orders of magnitude with values up to 107. These large ranges of variations were correlated with the internal tide energy level, which highlights the contrast between regions close and far from internal tide generations. Finescale parameterizations of 𝜖 induced by the breaking of...

Turbulent viscosity in natural surf zones ArchiMer
Grasso, Florent; Ruessink, B. G..
Waves breaking in the shallow surf zone near the shoreline inject turbulence into the water column that may reach the bed to suspend sediment. Breaking-wave turbulence in the surf zone is, however, poorly understood, which is one of the reasons why many process-based coastal-evolution models predict coastal change during severe storms inadequately. Here, we use data collected in two natural surf zones to derive a new parameterization for the stability function C-mu that determines the magnitude of the eddy viscosity nu(t) in two-equation turbulent-viscosity models, nu(t) = C(mu)k(2)/epsilon, where k is turbulent kinetic energy and epsilon is the turbulence dissipation rate. In both data sets, the ratio of turbulence production to dissipation is small...

Growth curves of meat-producing mammals by von Bertalanffy’s model PAB
Fernandes,Felipe Augusto; Fernandes,Tales Jesus; Pereira,Adriele Aparecida; Meirelles,Sarah Laguna Conceição; Costa,Adriano Carvalho.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate how the parameterization and the application of different allometric values affect the obtention of the most adequate fit of von Bertalanffy’s model, in the description of the growth curve of meat-producing mammals (bovine, pigs, rabbits, and sheep). Among the nonlinear models, von Bertalanffy’s has been very often applied in several areas, with different parameterizations. This model has been commonly used with an allometric value of m = 2/3; however, for mammals, it is believed that this value can be m = 3/4. The analyzed data referring to the mass of meat-producing mammals according to their age were obtained from research institutions and from the literature. The results showed that von Bertalanffy’s...

Calibration and evaluation of the DSSAT/Canegro model for sugarcane cultivars under irrigation managements AGRIAMBI
Coelho,Anderson P.; Dalri,Alexandre B.; Fischer Filho,João A.; Faria,Rogério T. de; Silva,Laércio S.; Gomes,Romário P..
ABSTRACT Model calibration is a fundamental factor to obtain high accuracy in the estimation of crop growth and yield. This study aimed to parameterize the genetic and ecotype coefficients of the DSSAT/Canegro model for five sugarcane cultivars kept under three water managements, besides evaluating the accuracy of the model in predicting sugarcane stalk yield, sugar yield and height. Experimental field data were obtained from two years (2016 and 2017) of cultivation at FCAV/Universidade Estadual Paulista, Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil. The cultivars were maintained under supplementary irrigation, deficit irrigation and no irrigation. Data of the supplementary irrigation treatment (without stress) were used for the parameterization of each cultivar. Model...

Two approaches to calculate TVDI in humid subtropical climate of southern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Schirmbeck,Lucimara Wolfarth; Fontana,Denise Cybis; Schirmbeck,Juliano.
ABSTRACT: Soybean crops occupy most areas in Rio Grande do Sul State and are highly dependent on rainfall since most of them are non-irrigated. Rainfall during the harvest period is often insufficient to meet the water demand, making water indicators an important tool for the crops. This study compared two approaches in the parameterization process of TVDI (Temperature-Vegetation Dryness Index) in a subtropical climate region of Brazil. The process used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images of the surface temperature (TS) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), with spatial resolutions of 1,000 m and periods of 8-16 d, respectively. The evaporative triangles for the TS/NDVI scatter plots were built either for each image...
