Genotypbedingte Veränderungen der Proteinqualität bei der Gärfutterbereitung von Rotklee Organic Eprints
Krawutschke, Manuel; Weiher, Nina; Gierus, Martin; Thaysen, Johannes; Taube, Friedhelm.
Ensilage of red clover results in lower concentrations of non-protein nitrogen compared to other forage legumes. It is assumed that the polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity in red clover is related to this effect. Therefore, a laboratory ensiling trial was carried out to quantify the changes in crude protein (CP) fractions during the ensiling process using the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System. At four cutting dates, fresh, wilted and ensiled herbage of three red clover genotypes and white clover grown in two systems (with and without mechanical stress) was sampled. The specific PPO activity was measured photometrically in fresh leaves of the plants. Concentrations of fraction A increased from 130-197 g/kg CP to 372-544 g/kg CP during the...

Refining proteins from green crops for high quality feed products for monogastricanimals and dairy cows Organic Eprints
Lübeck, Mette.
Green biorefinery concepts have the potential to become a suitable solution for production of organic protein-rich feeds from green crops. Different green crops such as alfalfa, red clover and clover grasses are studied as possible feedstocks for the development of an organic biorefinery system with refined proteins, ensiled press cake to be used as cattle feed and residual juice with potentials for fermentation of amino acids, lactic acid or other uses. A process was developed by which screw pressed juice from the freshly harvested crop was used for lactic acid fermentation to decrease the pH and precipitate proteins. These refined proteins have a favourable amino acid content and are comparable with soy proteins, especially for poultry where methionine...

On-Farm nutrient balance assessment to improve nutrient management on organic dairy farms Organic Eprints
Taube, Friedhelm; Pötsch, E.M..
A survey is presented on the impact of different intensities of grassland management related to nutrient balances and their assessment. With special reference to data from Austria and Germany, it is postulated that on-farm nutrient balance assessment is a valuable tool for identifying deficits in efficiency of nutrient use in the soil-plant-animal system. Farm gate balances can be used as indicators for Codes of Good Agricultural Practice in Europe, if input/output parameters and calculations are standardised and if acceptable surpluses are regionally validated.

Anaerobic digestion of residual liquid effluent (brown juice) from a green biorefinery Organic Eprints
Martinez, EJ; Mirolucci, Federico; Gomez, X; Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Uellendahl, Hinrich.
This work studied the anaerobic digestion of brown juice, a liquid residual stream generated from biomass fractionation in a green biorefinery. Biomethane potential batch tests and inhibition studies of brown juice were performed during continuous processing in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. Prolongation of the lag phase in the batch tests with increasing substrate/inoculum ratio suggested initial inhibition, which was, however, overcome by adaptation. This was indicated by high final methane yields, which were close to the theoretical maximum of up to 500 L-CH4 kg-VS−1, achieved after 15 days for most of the set-ups. Reactor operation at the organic loading rate of 13.9 g-COD L−1 day−1 and hydraulic retention time of 3 days revealed methane...

Einfluss einer Schwefeldüngung zu Kleegras auf Pflanzengehalte, Leguminosenanteil und Ertrag auf einem Sandstandort Organic Eprints
Titze, Andreas; Gruber, Harriet.

Swalve, Hermann H.; Schäfer, Stephan; Mitsch, Uta.

Alpha-tocopherol and b-carotene in legume–grass mixtures as influenced by wilting, ensiling and type of silage additive Organic Eprints
Lindqvist, H.; Nadeau, E.; Jensen, S.K..
Effects of wilting, ensiling and type of additive on atocopherol and b-carotene contents in legume–grass mixtures were examined. Swards of birdsfoot trefoil + timothy (Bft + Ti), red clover + timothy (Rc + Ti) and red clover + meadow fescue (Rc + Mf) were harvested as a first regrowth in August 2005. Forage was wilted to a dry-matter (DM) content of 273 g kg)1 and ensiled without additive or with an inoculant or acid. Wilting decreased a-tocopherol concentration by 30% in the Bft + Ti mixture (P = 0x015). Untreated Bft + Ti silage had higher a-tocopherol content than red clover silages (56x9 vs. 34x2 mg kg)1 DM; P = 0x015). The a-tocopherol concentration of Bft + Ti silages increased during ensiling from 41x1 mg kg)1 DM in wilted herbage to 56x9, 65x2 and...

Sustainable management of foxtail meadows through hay making at seed maturity Organic Eprints
Huguenin-Elie, O.; Stutz, C.J.; Gago, R.; Lüscher, A..
Harvesting meadows at early heading of the grasses yields large quantities of high quality forage but might in the long term cause the swards to deteriorate due to the lack of formation of mature seeds. We studied 4 cutting regimes on a foxtail meadow to define which would maintain the foxtail population naturally and is acceptable in terms of forage quality. The 1st cut of the different cutting regimes was done either at early shooting, shooting, early heading or seed maturity of Alopecurus pratensis L.. The 2nd cut of the 3 first treatments was simultaneous to the 1st cut of the 4th treatment and was ground dried to allow the seeds to fall on the soil. When the meadow was harvested regularly at early heading of A. pratensis, its botanical composition...

Effect of deep-rooted plant species on 15Nitrogen uptake and herbage yield in temporary agricultural grasslands Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, K.; Eriksen, J.; Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Høgh-Jensen, H.; Rasmussen, J..
Aims: Increase of plant diversity has been suggested to enhance grassland productivity and resource use efficiency. Most studies on agricultural grasslands have focused on functional diversity of mixtures comprising legumes and non-legumes, but there is little knowledge of plant nutrient acquisition from deep- and shallow-rooted grassland plant species. To investigate whether deep-rooted (chicory: Cichorium intybus L.; Lucerne: Medicago sativa L.) and shallow-rooted (perennial ryegrass: Lolium perenne L.; white clover: Trifolium repens L.) grassland plant species differ in herbage yield and depth dependent soil N-access, we investigated in the field if 1) a mixture comprising shallow- and deep-rooted grassland plant species has greater herbage yields than...

Leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) from grass-clover pastures after ploughing Organic Eprints
Vinther, F.P.; Eriksen, J.; Hansen, E.M..
In mixed arable grassland systems there can be a considerable build-up of nitrogen (N) caused by input through symbiotic N2 fixation and by the deposition from grazing animals. After ploughing of such grazed grassland large amounts of inorganic N may be released through mineralisation and subsequently leached to deeper soil layers or eventually to the groundwater. However, not much is known about the contribution of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) to the total amount of N leached.
