A Fractal Landscape Realizer for Generating Synthetic Maps Ecology and Society
Hargrove, William; Oak Ridge National Laboratory; hnw@fire.esd.ornl.gov; Hoffman, Forrest M; Oak Ridge National Laboratory;; Schwartz, Paul M; ;.
A fractal landscape realizer has been developed that generates synthetic landscape maps to user specifications. The alternative landscape realizations are not identical to the actual maps after which they are patterned, but are similar statistically (i.e., the areas and fractal character of each category are replicated). A fractal or self-affine pattern generator is used to provide a spatial probability surface for each category in the synthetic map. The Fractal Realizer arbitrates contentions among categories in a way that makes it possible to preserve the fractal patterns of all the categories in the resulting synthetic landscape. Each synthetic landscape is one equally likely realization from among an infinite ensemble of possible fractal landscape...

Coherent heat patterns revealed by unsupervised classification of Argo temperature profiles in the North Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Maze, Guillaume; Mercier, Herle; Fablet, Ronan; Tandeo, Pierre; Radcenco, Manuel Lopez; Lenca, Philippe; Feucher, Charlene; Le Goff, Clement.
A quantitative understanding of the integrated ocean heat content depends on our ability to determine how heat is distributed in the ocean and what are the associated coherent patterns. This study demonstrates how this can be achieved using unsupervised classification of Argo temperature profiles. The classification method used is a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) that decomposes the Probability Density Function of a dataset into a weighted sum of Gaussian modes. It is determined that the North Atlantic Argo dataset of temperature profiles con- tains 8 groups of vertically coherent heat patterns, or classes. Each of the temperature profile classes reveals unique and physically coherent heat distributions along the vertical axis. A key result of this study is...

The main pycnocline in the North Atlantic subtropical gyre from Argo Data ArchiMer
Feucher, Charlene; Maze, Guillaume; Mercier, Herle.
In the north Atlantic subtropical gyre, the oceanic vertical structure of density is characterized by a region of rapid increase with depth. This layer is called the permanent pycnocline because this density feature is observed throughout the year. The pycnocline is the transition layer between light, low-latitude, surface water masses which are ventilated every winter when penetrated locally by the mixed layer and dense, deeper water masses whose properties are set in the high latitudes and circulate equatorward. In-situ data from the Argo array provide temperature/salinity profiles allowing the characterization in space and time of the permanent pycnocline. We thus developed a new method to characterize its depth, thickness and thermohaline...

Analysis of the Ecological Migration Pattern in Ethnic Minority Areas - A Case Study of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region AgEcon
Zhang, Yun-yan.
By taking Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region as an example, this paper analyzes the ecological migration pattern in ethnic minority areas. The basic patterns of development for poverty relief in Ningxia are in-situ migration and new area development pattern. The new area development pattern includes three types, namely small town development pattern around urban radiation districts, urban labor migration pattern, and large-scale ecological migration pattern. Finally, successful experience of ecological migration in Ningxia is summarized. First, scientific industrial planning shall be made on the basis of proper selection of ecological migration location in immigrant settlement regions. Second, scientific and comprehensive ecological migration policies should be...

Analysis of nozzle spray distribution for different nozzle height and pressure CIGR Journal
Khoshnam, Farhad.
A patternator was designed and constructed with the aim of field sprayers pattern testing and consequently application of more accurate weed control, reduce environmental and economic costs associated with weed control. The patternator was tested at six spray height (50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 cm) for each of the three levels of system pressure (1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 bar). All measurements were performed spraying water with a temperature of 20 oC in the laboratory. Environmental conditions are kept constant at a temperature of 48 oC, relative humidity of 51% and wind speed 3 m/s. The Spray Width (cm), Standard Deviation and Coefficient of Variation (CV) of spray distribution patterns obtained from Patternator experiments at various nozzle heights and pressures....
