Genesis, Characterization, and Classification of Mangrove Soils in the Subaé River Basin, Bahia, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Bomfim,Marcela Rebouças; Santos,Jorge Antonio Gonzaga; Costa,Oldair Vinhas; Otero,Xosé Luis; Boas,Geraldo da Silva Vilas; Capelão,Valdinei da Silva; Santos,Edson de Souza dos; Nacif,Paulo Gabriel Soledade.
ABSTRACT Preservation of mangroves, a very significant ecosystem from a social, economic, and environmental viewpoint, requires knowledge on soil composition, genesis, morphology, and classification. These aspects are of paramount importance to understand the dynamics of sustainability and preservation of this natural resource. In this study mangrove soils in the Subaé river basin were described and classified and inorganic waste concentrations evaluated. Seven pedons of mangrove soil were chosen, five under fluvial influence and two under marine influence and analyzed for morphology. Samples of horizons and layers were collected for physical and chemical analyses, including heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Mn, Zn, and Fe). The moist soils were suboxidic, with Eh...

Genesis of Soils Formed from Mafic Igneous Rock in the Atlantic Forest Environment Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Santos,Adailde do Carmo; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Anjos,Lúcia Helena Cunha dos; Bernini,Thiago Andrade; Cooper,Miguel.
ABSTRACT Different parent materials participate in the formation of soils in the hilly landscape of “Mar de Morros” in the Atlantic Forest environment. Those derived from mafic igneous rock (gabbro) frequently show erosion problems because of land use, which is aggravated by the mountainous relief and soil attributes. This study evaluated the main pedogenic processes of soils formed from mafic igneous rock (gabbro) in a toposequence in Pinheiral (RJ) by characterizing physical, chemical, mineralogical and micromorphological attributes. The profiles are located at different sections in the toposequence: summit (P1), shoulder (P2), backslope (P3) and footslope (P4).They were classified according to the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS) and...

Weathering of Rhyolites and Soil Formation in an Atlantic Forest Fragment in Northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Brilhante,Stephany Alves; Santos,Jean Cheyson Barros dos; Souza Júnior,Valdomiro Severino de; Araújo,Jane Kelly Silva; Ribeiro Filho,Mateus Rosas; Corrêa,Marcelo Metri.
ABSTRACT Weathering and pedogenesis have been studied for a wide range of rocks and climates around the world. However, the eruption of rhyolitic magmas is a rare geological event, which leads to few studies associated with the rhyolite-soil-landscape relationship. In this context, this study evaluated the influence of rhyolite weathering on the properties of soils along a slope in an Atlantic Forest environment in the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. Four weathering profiles derived from rhyolites were classified and sampled for chemical, physical, mineralogical, micromorphological, differential thermal, and thermogravimetric analyses. The chemical properties reflect the original rock rich in felsic minerals, poor in bases, and the types of clay...

Mineralogy and Concentration of Potentially Toxic Elements in Soils of the São Francisco Sedimentary Basin Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ferreira,Edilene Pereira; Coelho,Ricardo Marques; Valladares,Gustavo Souza; Dias,Laura Milani da Silva; Assis,Ana Carolina Cunha de; Silva,Rafael Cipriano da; Azevedo,Antonio Carlos de; Abreu,Cleide Aparecida de.
ABSTRACT Lithological and geomorphological variations determine formation of soils with different mineralogical constitutions and can influence the distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTE). The aim of this study was to determine the contents of PTE and mineralogical assemblages along soil profiles of different classes and parent materials and to investigate the association among these factors in the São Francisco sedimentary basin in the northern part of the state of Minas Gerais (Brazil). Eight soil pedons of different classes that developed from different parent materials (limestone, siltstone, phyllite, alluvial-colluvial sediments, detrital cover, and rhythmite) were studied in two lithotoposequences. Soil morphological, particle-size, and...

Relief Position and Soil Properties under Continuous Banana Cropping in Subhumid Climate in Northeast Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Almeida,Maria da Conceição de; Araujo,Jane Kelly Silva; Ribeiro Filho,Mateus Rosas; Souza Júnior,Valdomiro Severino de.
ABSTRACT Sequences of thick and eroded soils in hills surfaces are cultivated with banana since the beginning of the last century in the Northeast of Pernambuco (PE), Brazil. Measurements of soil properties depending on soil slope under intensive agricultural cultivation are limited mostly as the pedogenetic approach. This study aimed to identify the dominant soil types, to evaluate morphological, physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of soil profiles, and link them to the relief position under continuous banana cropping, in the transition Mata-Agreste of PE. Three slope classes and soil profiles were considered: Profile 1 (P1), upper third of the elevation slope; Profile 2 (P2), middle third of the slope; and Profile 3 (P3) lower third. They...

Highlands of the upper Jequitinhonha valley, Brazil: II - mineralogy, micromorphology, and landscape evolution¹ Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Bispo,Fábio Henrique Alves; Silva,Alexandre Christofaro; Torrado,Pablo Vidal; Souza Junior,Valdomiro Severino de.
Palm swanp formations, the so-called veredas, typically occur in the Brazilian biome known as "Cerrado" (savanna-like vegetation), especially on flattened areas or tablelands (chapadas). The aim of this study was to characterize the mineralogy and micromorphology of soil materials from a representative toposequence of the watershed of the vereda Lagoa do Leandro, located in Minas Novas, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on plains in the region of the upper Jequitinhonha valley, emphasizing essential aspects of their genesis and landscape evolution. The toposequence is underlain by rocks of the Macaúbas group and covered with detrital and metamorphic rocks (schists of Proterozoic diamictites). The soil profiles were first pedologically described; samples of...

Paleoenvironmental Characterization of a High-Mountain Environment in the Atlantic Forest in Southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva Neto,Eduardo Carvalho da; Santos,Jaqueline Jesus Santana dos; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Maranhão,Deyvid Diego Carvalho; Barros,Fabiana da Costa; Anjos,Lúcia Helena Cunha dos.
ABSTRACT: Records of changes in the phytosociological structure of vegetation can be observed more clearly in soils that have more significant accumulation of organic matter, like those occurring in high-mountain environments. The aim of this study was to characterize soils formed in high-mountain environments in the Itatiaia National Park (INP), state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil, and to discuss the potential of preserved phytoliths as markers of vegetative history and environmental factors. Four profiles were selected, which were morphologically described and evaluated for their physical and chemical properties. For phytolith analysis and high-resolution determination of the stable carbon isotopes, samples were collected at 0.10 m intervals....

Pedodiagenetic Characterization of Cretaceous Paleosols in Southwest Minas Gerais, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Nascimento,Diego Luciano do; Ladeira,Francisco Sergio Bernardes; Batezelli,Alessandro.
ABSTRACT The influence of post-burial geological processes on preserving pedogenic properties has great importance in identifying ancient paleosols both in the field and in a laboratory. However there are not many publications that focus on characterizing paleosol diagenesis. As temperature and pressure progressively increase, evidence of pedogenesis is modified and destroyed, hindering paleoenvironment characterization and interpretation. This paper discusses diagenetic evidence and its relation to strictly pedogenic features, like structure, cements, nodules, and neoformation of clay minerals using the carbonate paleosols of the Marília Formation in the upper unit of the Bauru Basin as a case study. Despite the long geotectonic and thermal history of the...

Genesis of Soils from Bauxite in Southeastern Brazil: Resilication as a Soil-Forming Process Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Mateus,Ana Carolina Campos; Oliveira,Fábio Soares de; Varajão,Angélica Fortes Drummond Chicarino; Soares,Caroline Cibele Vieira.
ABSTRACT Pedological studies using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS) showed a Xanthic Ferralsol formed from the degradation of bauxite on a slope in the Caparaó region, in southeastern Brazil. We found a decrease in the number and size of bauxite fragments toward the top of the profiles, bauxite fragments that were more degraded at the top of the profiles, transformation of gibbsite into kaolinite, and absolute enrichment in silicon in the mass balance. These indicators suggest that resilication could be the major process responsible for formation of the soil; detailed studies are needed to verify the origin of the silica. The reintroduction of silica into the system occurs by...

Rare earth elements in gneiss regoliths in southern Minas Gerais, Brazil Scientia Agricola
Ferreira,Edilene Pereira; Guerra,Adriano Ribeiro; Azevedo,Antonio Carlos de.
ABSTRACT: Regolith characterization in its entirety is particularly difficult in gneissic regoliths due to the heterogeneity of their rock structure. Rare earth elements (REE) are a useful tool in helping understand the evolution of regoliths. This study relates the mineralogy and weathering indexes of three gneisses regoliths (P1-leucocratic, P2-mesocratic and P3-melanocratic gneisses) to the distribution of REE at depth. In soil, clay activity, iron and manganese oxides, CaO, SiO2, P2O5, TiO2, Fe2O3, and MgO showed high positive correlation with REE. The absolute content of REE was enriched in mafic minerals. At the interface between the soil and saprolite, the sum of absolute REE content was greater in soil than in saprolite in P1, while the opposite...

Mineralogical and chemical attributes of soils from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest domain Scientia Agricola
Cunha,Alexson de Mello; Fontes,Maurício Paulo Ferreira; Lani,João Luiz.
ABSTRACT: The Atlantic Forest is one of the most important and yet the most devastated Brazilian biome, occupying in the past the majority of the East Atlantic Coast. Therefore, a detailed knowledge of the soils near the coastal line influenced by this biome is essential for land use and management of these environments. The aim of this study was to acquire a deeper knowledge of the chemistry, mineralogy and genesis of soils in two micro-watersheds of the Atlantic Forest Biome. Eight soil profiles were sampled and described along one transect. Both young and more developed soils exhibit low fertility and low Fe2O3 content. The Oxic Dystrudepts are less dystrophic than the other soils studied and exhibit greater availability of K+, due to the mixing of...
