A work of gathering historical fishing (catch, fishing effort, CPUE, characteristics and operation of purseiner fleet) and satellite (NOAA, SeaStar and SeaWind) database of northern Chile, and fishing and oceanographic in situ sampling for validation purpose is made. With this information and the use of geographical information system (GIS) the distribution of pelagic resources and the associated environmental conditions (sea surface temperature, thermal gradients, chlorophyll concentration and wind fields) are analysed in order to develop a probable fishing ground (PFG) index prediction model. A PFG model of anchovy (Engraulins ringens) is operative for the northern Chile. The impact of the use of PFG charts was evaluated analyzing the operational... |

This summary tackles the development of fisheries in the Caribbean using fads. It highlights the principal causes which explain why, in spite of more than thirty years of experimenting, fishing on fads has not developed as much as had been hoped. Whereas the deep-sea production of pelagic fish by the continental countries of the region has considerably increased since the early eighties, that of the Lesser Antilles has grown more slowly. Anchored fads have given the boats of the small-scale fisheries from three islands (Guadeloupe, Martinique and Curacao) access to these pelagic resources. The various modes of development and management of the fads observed in each island are described. The first available data are used to provide some indications of the... |

In the West Indies, artisanal vessels target pelagic fish off the coast using several fishing gears in the same trip, which complicates their codification based on ICCAT references. This paper describes the fishing techniques used in Martinique in exploiting offshore pelagic species. A distinction is made between two métiers, fishing for large pelagic species on free schools or around driftwood and fishing close to anchored fish aggregating devices. These two métiers can be used in the same trip. Fishers can also suspend their use to catch small offshore pelagic species such as flying fish. Each gear enables a species group to be targeted. However, data collection carried out at landing sites does not allow assignment of catches to each of the gears used... |

The authors deal with the coastal fisheries in the Reunion Island. In a first chapter they describe the geographical environment of this island (volcanism, climate, cyclones, hydrology, currents water masses) which has an influence on fisheries results. The second and third chapter describe the commercial species of the Reunion island (pelagic fishes: Scombridae as Thunnus albacares, Katsunonus pelamis, Euthynnus affinis, Thunnus obesus, Gymnosarda unicolor, Thunnus alalunga, other fishes as Xiphias gladius, Makaira mazara, Istiophorus platypterus. The fourth chapter deals with the fishing gears and the catching methods. The fifth chapter is devoted to fishery economics, financing |

Upwellings off the coasts of western Africa provide abundant but fluctuating marine resources. Sea surface temperature and wind stress, monitored by the ship-of-opportunity observation network, are compared to fishery statistics from 1964 onwards. In the Canary Current, off Sahara and Mauritania, upwellings are mostly wind driven. In the Guinea Current, off Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana, the link with local wind is very weak. In the southern Canary Current, two wind-intensification periods occurred in the early 1970s and from 1986 onwards. On each occasion, Sardina pilchardus landings were multiplied approximately threefold. During the first event, catches of species living at the periphery of the upwelling, Sardinella, Trachurus, Decapterus and Scomber,... |

The main objectives of the survey were the following: • To map the distribution and estimate the abundance of the most commercially important pelagic species in the Namibia-Angola transboundary area (15°50-19°00’), following the survey design utilized in Angolan waters (6 n.mi spacing between transect lines), with special emphasis on the two horse mackerel Cunene horse mackerel (Trachurus trecae) and Cape horse mackerel (Trachurus capensis), sardine “Pilchard” (Sardinops sagax) and other small pelagic species, including anchovy (Engraulis capensis) and round herring (Etrumeus whiteheadi). • To map the distributions and estimate the abundance of the same species in central Namibia south to Dune Point (20°15’ S), following the established survey design with... |

A research survey was carried out in the southeast of the San Cristóbal island of the Galápagos Province (Galápagos Islands, Ecuador), between the 6th and 23th of december 1994; a 9 637 km2 was covered, from ca., 100 m depth waters. The Simrad EK-500 (38 kHz) acoustic equipment was used on board the I/V Tohallí of the National Fisheries Institute. The catch was compounded of 98% of makarell (Scomber japonicus) and 2% of south sardine (Sadinops sagax). The estimated results for biological and acoustic parameters for S. sagax were: sex ratio (male and female): 36% y 64%; furcal length range: 21-32 cm; mean legth: 26,6 cm; mean weith: 0,254 kg; theoreticals target strength and weight target strength (TS, TSkg): -38,9 dB and -33,0 dB. Mictofid catches were not... |
