Modélisation de la résistance aux chocs de salinité des postlarves de Penaeus vannamei ArchiMer
Aquacop, Aquacop; Le Moullac, Gilles; Damez, D.
The notion of penaeid shrimp postlarvae quality, which implies a survival potential, is still a subjective parameter. The zootechnical criteria and the visual observations are not sufficient to evaluate the physiological condition of the hatchery reared postlarvae. The resistance of postlarvae to salinity shocks is a representative criteria of their condition. The goal of this study is to present a non-linear regression model at 2 variables (size, salinity) for the P. vannamei postlarvae resistance to salinity shocks. Between the second and the twentieth day after metamorphosis; 5 salinity shocks (20, 15, 10, 5 and 20/00) were tested daily, each one with 50 postlarvae. Survival rates were recorded after 2 hrs. Concurrently, the postlarvae growth in the...

Adaptation of digestive enzymes to dietary protein, carbohydrate and fibre levels and influence of protein and carbohydrate quality in Penaeus vannamei larvae (Crustacea, Decapoda) ArchiMer
Le Moullac, Gilles; Van Wormhoudt, A; Aquacop, Aquacop.
Activity of digestive enzymes (trypsin, chymotrypsin and amylase) was studied in relation with food in Penaeus vannamei larvae first stages. Microparticles containing casein involved the decrease of soluble protein content and enzyme activities. Specific trypsin activity but not chymotrypsin was correlated (p<1%) to casein level between 10 and 60% in microparticles. Cellulose fibres in food seemed to have little effect on digestive enzymes. Starch, between 1 and 20% in microparticles, had no influence on specific amylase activity. The effect of different feeding conditions were also tested on growth. No clear relationship between growth and enzyme is established since only trypsin is concerned in the case of a casein dose effect in the food. The protein...

Improving simultaneously the quality and safety of cooked and peeled shrimp using a cocktail of bioprotective lactic acid bacteria ArchiMer
Saraoui, Taous; Cornet, Josiane; Guillouet, Emilie; Pilet, Marie France; Chevalier, Frederique; Joffraud, Jean-jacques; Leroi, Francoise.
Tropical shrimp is of considerable economic importance in the word but is highly perishable due to microbial and chemical degradation. Biopreservation is a food preservation technology based on the addition of “positive” bacteria able to kill or prevent the growth of undesirable microorganisms. Two strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have previously been selected for a biopreservation strategy: Lactococcus piscium CNCM I-4031, for its ability to prevent the sensory deterioration of seafood and Carnobacterium divergens V41, which inhibits growth of Listeria monocytogenes. The objective was to test the association of the two strains to improve both the quality and safety of shrimp. In a first trial, the two LAB were inoculated alone or in a cocktail in...

Improved production of postlarval white shrimp through supplementation of L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate in their diet OMA
Kontara, E.K.M.; Merchie, G.; Lavens, P.; Robles, R.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (ApP) was used as a vitamin C source to study the ascorbic acid (AA) requirements for the early postlarval stages of white shrimp (<i>Penaeus vannamei</i>). First the stability of ApP in the diets was determined: ApP losses after pelletizing and 10 min immersion in seawater were 25-35% and 30%, respectively. Semipurified diets with five levels of ApP (0, 20, 40, 100 and 200 mg kg-1 expressed as active AA were fed <i>ad libitum</i> to <i>P. vannamei</i> (PL-14 stage, mean dry weight 0.73 mg) for 26 days. Each treatment was run in five replicates. No significant differences in growth were observed among treatments after 26 days of feeding. As of day 19 of feeding, increased...

Comparison of phosphatidylcholine purified from soybean and marine fish roe in the diet of postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> Boone OMA
Coutteau, P.; Kontara, E.K.M.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effects of adding two different types of phosphatidylcholine (PC) (purified from soybean lecithin, SPC, or marine fish roe, MPC) on growth, survival and osmotic stress resistance as well as lipid and fatty acid composition of postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> was determined. PC was added at a level of 1.5% in a semi-purified diet containing similar levels of essential fatty acids (EFA). A PC-free diet served as the control treatment. The supplementation of 1.5% SPC significantly improved growth and reduced sensitivity to osmotic stress. <i>P. vannamei</i>-fed MPC showed inferior growth compared to those fed SPC, but yielded better growth and survival than the PC-deprived shrimp. The addition of any of the PC types resulted in a...

Maturation performance of <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> co-fed <i>Artemia</i> biomass preparations OMA
Naessens, E.; Lavens, P.; Gomez, L.; Browdy, C.L.; McGovern-Hopkins, K.; Spencer, A.W.; Kawahigashi, D.; Sorgeloos, P..
Few shrimp hatcheries successfully propagate captive broodstock on a commercial scale. Diets for acceptable maturation performance of <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> have typically relied on the inclusion of marine polychaetes (bloodworm) from Panama or Maine, USA, which are expensive and are of unpredictable supply. Studies were therefore undertaken at experimental and commercial scale to replace or supplement the polychaetes by frozen ongrown <i>Artemia</i> which were either non-enriched or bioencapsulated with specific boosters. In experiment 1 the control diet consisted of frozen squid only and was evaluated against broodstock diets where 60% of the squid was substituted by bloodworm or enriched <i>Artemia</i> biomass....

The effect of different levels and sources of dietary phosphatidylcholine on the growth, survival, stress resistance, and fatty acid composition of postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> OMA
Coutteau, P.; Camara, M.R.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effect of dietary purified phosphatidylcholine (PC) was evaluated on growth, survival, resistance to osmotic shock, and fatty acid composition of early postlarval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> (0.3 mg initial dry weight) fed semi-purified diets. PC sources used were purified soybean PC (SPC, 95% purity), chicken-egg PC (ECP, 94% purity), and de-oiled soybean lecithin (DSL, 23% PC). The growth response of shrimp fed 1.5% of SPC or 6.5% of DSL was significantly greater than that of shrimp fed a PC-deficient diet, whereas no effect was observed either on survival or stress resistance. Further increasing the dietary level of soybean PC from 1.5% to 3.3% resulted in a significant decrease of the shrimp weight gain. Shrimp receiving 1.5% of PC,...

Effect of dietary phosphatidylcholine on growth and lipid composition of post-larval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> (Boone) OMA
Camara, M.R.; Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Dietary phospholipids and particularly phosphatidylcholine have been found to enhance growth and survival in penaeid shrimp, an effect which has been attributed to their limited ability to synthesize phospholipids de novo. However, most of the studies made so far have used low purity phospholipids and therefore, precise requirements for dietary phosphatidylcholine among several species of shrimp have been difficult to establish. As part of a broad study which aims to study lipid nutrition in penaeid shrimp, the dietary effect of purified phosphatidylcholine (PC) on growth, survival, stress resistance and body lipid composition of post-larval <i>Penaeus vannamei</i> fed semi-purified microbound diets was evaluated. Changes on the body lipid...
