We examine the hypothesis that the chlorophyll a fluorescence technique can be an efficient tool to support the selection of species adapted to high irradiance and therefore, suitable for use in initial rehabilitation projects of degraded areas. The experiment was conducted at the Pedro de Moura Operational Base, Amazonas, Brazil. The fluorescence transients were obtained using a portable fluorometer for leaves of Bombacopsis macrocalyx (Bm), Eugenia cumini (Ec), Iryanthera macrophyla (Im) and Senna reticulata (Sr), which were subjected to high irradiance between 12:00 am and 1:00 p.m. Using the OJIP test, the following were calculated: performance index (PI ABS), density of reaction centres per cross section (RC/CS), maximum efficiency of photosystem II... |

With Japonica rice BRS Firmeza and indica rice BRS Pelota (low and high grain yield, respectively) as materials, Chl content and Chl a fluorescence parameters in flag leaves from the heading to mature grain stage were investigated. The Chl content and the Chl a fluorescence were measured using a portable chlorophyll meter CL-01 and portables fluorometer Handy-PEA and FMS-2 (Hansatech, Kings Lynn, UK), respectively. All measurements were taken on middle part of the flag leaves (n = 10). The results showed that the Chl content and Chl a fluorescence parameters declined after full expansion of flag leaves in both rice cultivars. However, these biochemical and photochemical parameters did not show similar changing pattern and the behavior of flag leaves... |

A combination of experimental cells consisting of some agro-technical methods aimed at accelerating the biodegradation of petroleum contaminated soils were evaluated in order to ascertain the relevance of these methods and the relative attention due necessary soil environmental parameters. The methods of treatment involved the variation of tilling, watering and nutrient application, plus biopile and phytoremediation treatments. In the experiments described, petroleum contamination of soils was simulated under field conditions, the remedial treatments were then utilized for clean up. Analysis of soil parameters after a six-week study period showed an increase in total heterotrophic bacteria (THB) counts across all the treatments, with THB counts increasing... |

ABSTRACT One of the parameters involved in the design of pressurized hydraulic systems is the pressure drop in the pipes. The verification of the pressure drop can be performed through the Darcy-Weisbach formulation, which considers a coefficient of head loss (f) that can be estimated by the implicit Colebrook-White equation. However, for this determination, it is necessary to use numerical methods or the Moody diagram. Because of this, numerous explicit approaches have been proposed to overcome such limitation. In this sense, the objective of this study was to analyze the explicit approximations of the f for pressurized conduits in comparison to the Colebrook-White formulation, determining the most precise ones so that they can be used as an alternative... |
