The colonization process and successional patterns of a periphytic algal community were evaluated in a Amazonian Viveiro Lake (Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil). Sampling was performed over a period of 35 days; at four-day intervals for 20 days, and then at five-day intervals. Water sampling for physical, chemical and biological analyses was done during the dry and rainy season. Glass slides were used as artificial substrates for periphyton colonization. The structural community was evaluated through population density, algae class, diversity indices and descriptive species. Species richness, diversity and evenness increased as succession progressed. Much remains to be learned about biological diversity, which constitutes a valuable natural resource. Due to the pressure that human activity has put on natural resources, biodiversity has been reduced, often unbeknownst to those responsible for that activity. Therefore, we aimed to perform a quantitative and qualitative analysis of periphytic algae in the Itupararanga reservoir, correlating the results with the physical and chemical characteristics of the water, as well as with climatic conditions. In order to analyze the structure and dynamics of the periphytic community in Iraí reservoir, an eutrophic environment, samples were taken in two seasons: summer (April) and winter (September) of 2002, in littoral areas from three regions of the reservoir (upper, intermediary and lower). Rooted aquatic vegetation were used as sampling substrates, because they were found in all sampling sites. A total of 297 species was recorded (225 in April, 73 exclusive taxa; and 224 in September, with 72 exclusive taxa). Abstract We conducted a taxonomical study of epiphytic diatoms on the macrophytes Polygonum hydropiperoides, Ludwigia peruviana and Alternanthera philoxeroides collected in the mesotrophic reservoir Piraquara II flooded in 2009, located in the state of Paraná. A total of 135 infrageneric taxa were identified, among them five at generic level and other five are first records to the state. We provided illustration, valve metrics, meristics limits and taxonomic reference for each taxon. Also, life forms and species frequency are given. This study evaluated the periphyton production on artificial substrates considering it as a source of low cost live food for fish. Blades of artificial substrates such as wood, black plastic, acrylic, fiberglass, ceramics and glass (all with 144cm2 blades, 24 for each substrate) were submerged 20.0cm below the water column for 35 days in the winter and 42 days in the summer. The blades were randomly installed in 200m3 pond and evaluated for the biomass production at different phases during the summer and winter. Впервые получены данные об органическом веществе в перифитоне системы гидробиологической очистки морской воды. Установлено, что количество белка находилось в пределах 0.5 – 2.5 мг/100 мг, аминокислот 0.01 – 0.9 мг/100 мг, углеводов 2.0 – 7.0 мг/100 мг, липидов 1.6 – 7.1 мг/100 мг, нуклеиновых соединений (свободные нуклеотиды, РНК, ДНК) 0.7 – 2.3 мг/100 мг, углеводородов 2.8 – 4.2 мг/100 мг. As macrófitas aquáticas são muito abundantes em áreas alagadas como as do Pantanal, e fornecem um vasto substrato para a microbiota, em particular para a comunidade perifítica. Foi avaliado o efeito da deposição de sedimento sobre a comunidade perifítica ao longo de 40km do trecho final do rio Taquari, em 12 estações de amostragem, em setembro de 1998. Foram coletados pecíolos de Eichhornia azurea, raspados e filtrados para análise da biomassa perifítica (clorofila a e peso seco). Foram tomadas amostras de raízes, caules e folhas da macrófita para análise do sedimento aderido. E as características da água também foram estudadas. In order to estimate energetic relationship, microphytic and benthic bivalve levels of a shallow (1.5 m), sandy ecosystem near Marseille (Gulf of Fos, Southern France) were sampled monthly during 1.5 year, in two sites differing by their wave exposure. In the sheltered area, the bivalve Ruditapes decussatus was the dominant species, while another bivalve, Donax trunculus , was found in the open, wave exposed site. Chlorophyll a and primary production of the phytoplankton and the microphytobenthos, as well as population dynamic, growth and biochemical composition of bivalves (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) were monitored. |

The main objectives of this investigation were to test the effects of (i) the presence of periphyton substrates, (ii) rearing density and (iii) supplemental feeding with dry feed on the growth and production of golden mullet (Liza aurata) juveniles. Twenty-six 1 m(2)-cages were installed in a French marine pond from April till June 2008. Mullets were stocked in cages with or without substrate at a density of 0, 20,40 or 60 individuals per cage.
