Volcanoes and climate: the triggering of preboreal Jökulhlaups in Iceland ArchiMer
Van Vliet-lanoë, Brigitte; Knudsen, Oskar; Guðmundsson, Agust; Guillou, Hervé; Chazot, Gilles; Langlade, Jessica; Liorzou, Celine; Nonnotte, Philippe.
The Early Holocene (12–8.2 cal ka) deglaciation and pulsed warming was associated in Iceland with two major generations of jökulhlaups around the Vatna ice-cap (Vatnajökull), at ca 11.4–11.2 cal ka and ca 10.4–9.9 cal ka, and major tephra emissions from the Grímsvötn and Bárðarbunga subglacial volcanoes. The earliest flood events were recorded inland during the Middle Younger Dryas and their deposits were overlain by the Early Preboreal Vedde Ash (11.8 cal ka). The first Holocene flood events (ca 11.4–11.2 cal ka) are issued from a glacial advance. The second, and major, set of floods was partly driven by the Erdalen cold events and advances (10.1–9.7 10Be ka) initially issued from the Bárðarbunga (10.4, 10.1–9.9 ka) and Grímsvötn volcanoes (Saksunarvatn...

Modeling on gas hydrate formation conditions in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau permafrost ArchiMer
Lu, Zhen Quan; Sultan, Nabil; Jin, Chun Shuang; Rao, Zhu; Luo, Xu Rong; Wu, Bi Hao; Zhu, You Hai.
Based on field investigated gas geochemistry and predecessors' data such as the permafrost ground temperature, thermal gradients within/below the frozen layer, the modeling on gas hydrate formation conditions is conducted in the Qinghai Tibet plateau permafrost. The modeled results show that the permafrost characteristics generally meet gas hydrate formation conditions in the study area. Gas composition, temperature-related permafrost parameters (e. g. permafrost thickness or its ground temperature and thermal gradients within / below the frozen layer) are the most important factors affecting gas hydrate occurrences, whose variance may cause the heterogeneity of gas hydrate occurrences in the study area. The most probable gas hydrate is the kind of hybrid...

Energy Balance Climate Models, Damage Reservoirs and the Time Profile of Climate Change Policy AgEcon
Brock, William A.; Engstrom, Gustav; Xepapadeas, Anastasios.
A simplified energy balance climate model is considered with the global mean temperature as the state variable, and an endogenous ice line. The movements of the ice line towards the Poles are associated with damage reservoirs where initial damages are high and then eventually vanish as the ice caps vanish and the damage reservoir is exhausted. We couple this climate model with a simple economic growth model and we show that the endogenous ice line induces a nonlinearity. This nonlinearity when combined with two sources of damages - the conventional damages due to temperature increase and the reservoir damages - generates multiple steady states and Skiba points. It is shown that the policy ramp implied by this model calls for high mitigation now. Simulation...
