Classification of agricultural systems based on pesticide use intensity and safety AgEcon

An analysis of socio-economic driving forces in crop protection is proposed to improve the implementation of sustainable strategies. The analysis includes: (1) a classification of agricultural systems based on pesticide use intensity and safety, (2) an evaluation of the profitability of farming systems and identification of socio-economic factors that influence pesticide use and (3) formulation of policy recommendations. We find that for cereals and for fruit trees alike, crop yields are much higher for agricultural systems with high doses of pesticides. Impact Assessment of Bt Corn Adoption in the Philippines AgEcon

This article examines the impact of Bt corn adoption in the Philippines using an econometric approach that addresses simultaneity, selection, and censoring problems. Although previous literature emphasizes the importance of simultaneity and selection problems, this is the first study that addresses the issue of censoring in estimating the effects of Bt corn adoption at the farm in a developing country context. We show that Bt corn adoption provides modest but statistically significant increases in farm yields and profits. Furthermore, our results provide some evidence of inference errors that can potentially arise when censoring in the pesticide application variable is ignored in the estimation procedures.

Environmental Benefits from Reduced Pesticide Use and Returns to Research: An Application to the U.S. Cotton Industry AgEcon

Cotton production is one of the main pesticide use industries in the U.S. This intensive use has resulted in the disruption of naturally occurring biological control factors that regulate other insect pest populations and “the pesticide treadmill”. The result is resistance to insecticides, high control costs and unacceptable levels of chemical insecticides in the environment. Concerns about the environmental and human health effects from pesticide use thus need to be modeled in evaluation studies.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF ADOPTING IPM TECHNIQUES: THE CASE OF PEACH PRODUCERS AgEcon

The impact of adopting integrated pest management (IPM) techniques is examined for peach producers in eight states accounting for most of the U.S. production. The method accounts for self-selectivity, simultaneity, and the pesticide demand equations are theoretically consistent with a restricted-profit function. Biological pest management techniques tend to reduce pesticide use and pesticide toxicity substantially, while pesticide-efficiency techniques (using scouting and economic thresholds) have an increasing effect on pesticide use and toxicity, and cultural techniques have an insignificant effect on pesticide use and toxicity.

Farm Level Impacts of Bt Corn Adoption in a Developing Country: Evidence from the Philippines AgEcon

This article examines the ex post farm-level impacts of Bt corn adoption in the Philippines. Using an econometric approach that addresses simultaneity, selection, and censoring problems, we show that Bt corn adoption provides modest but statistically significant increases in farm-level yields and profits. Furthermore, our results suggest that farm-level yield and profit impacts of Bt corn adoption are underestimated when censoring in the pesticide application variable is not considered in the estimation procedures. Previous literature have emphasized the importance of simultaneity and selection problems but this is the first study that have raised the issue of censoring problems in estimating the farm-level effects of Bt corn adoption.

An economic analysis of the possibility of reducing pesticides in French field crops AgEcon

The paper aims to study the effects of reducing pesticide use by farmers in the arable sector in France and the feasibility of a policy target of reducing pesticide use by half. The originality of the approach is to combine statistical data and expert knowledge to describe low-input alternative techniques at the national level. These data are used in a mathematical programming model to simulate the effect on land use, production and farmers’ income of achieving different levels of pesticide reduction. The results show that reducing pesticide use by 30% could be possible without reducing farmers’ income. Bt and Ht Corn versus Conventional Pesticide and Herbicide Use. Do Environmental Impacts Differ? AgEcon

In this paper we empirically assess and compare the environmental impact of pesticide programs for Bt, Ht (glufosinate) and conventional corn in Europe, employing the Environmental Impact Quotient. We use field trial data from Narbons, France 2004 as well as secondary data. Our results show that management of Bt corn has a lower environmental impact than conventional corn programs. Herbicide treatment of the Ht variety also has a much lower environmental impact than that of the two conventional programs. Our empirical findings support the argument of lower environmental and health impacts with respect to pesticide use when growing Bt and Ht corn. The outcomes are relevant for environmental benefit-cost analysis of Bt and Ht corn.
