Antibiotic prophylaxis in orthopedic surgeries: the results of an implemented protocol BJID
Queiroz,Raquel; Grinbaum,Renato S.; Galvão,Luciana L.; Tavares,Fernando G.; Bergsten-Mendes,Gun.
Though the basic principles of antibiotic prophylaxis have been well established, there is still considerable incorrect usage, including how much is prescribed and especially in the duration of treatment, which is generally superior to what is indicated. The adequate use of these drugs contributes towards decreasing the time of internment of the patient, prevents surgical site infection (SSI), decreasing the development of resistant microorganisms, and towards reduced costs for the hospital pharmacy. A protocol for the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Service of the Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual de São Paulo was developed. The objectives of the study were to promote rational antibiotic surgical prophylaxis, through...

Nakamura,Carina Akemi; Soares,Luciano; Farias,Mareni Rocha; Leite,Silvana Nair.
The objective of this study was to investigate the scientific output on health promotion within the pharmaceutical field and its relation with the development of pharmaceutical services within health systems. A comprehensive review of published scientific articles from the Medline and Lilacs databases was carried out. The review comprised articles published until December 2011, and used combinations of the terms 'health promotion' or 'health education' and 'pharmacy', 'pharmacist' or 'pharmaceutical'. The articles were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 170 full texts and 87 indexed abstracts were analyzed, evidencing that most described actions of health promotion in community pharmacies and other services. Following the...

Pharmaceutical consultation as a tool to improve health outcomes for patients with type 2 diabetes BJPS
Zubioli,Arnaldo; Silva,Maria Angélica Rafaini Covas Pereira da; Tasca,Raquel Soares; Curi,Rui; Bazotte,Roberto Barbosa.
This study develops and evaluates a pharmaceutical consultation program (PCP) to improve treatment for Type 2 diabetes patients (T2DP) and reduce risk factors for diabetic complications with possible application in other chronic diseases. We recruited T2DP receiving conventional medical treatment but with fasting glycemia >140mg/dl and/or glycated hemoglobin >7%. The PCP includes strategies obtained from Dader's method, the PWDT (Pharmacist's Workup of Drug Therapy method) model of pharmaceutical care, the SOAP (Subjective data, Objective data, Assessment, and Plan of care) method, and concepts based on a nursing care model. The PCP evaluated lifestyle, pharmacotherapy and monitoring it using laboratory tests, vital signs, and anthropometry....

Do Brazilian hospital pharmacists record, document, archive and disseminate their clinical practice? BJPS
Néri,Eugenie Desirèe Rabelo; Vasconcelos,Hemerson Bruno da Silva; Romeu,Geysa Aguiar; Fonteles,Marta Maria de França.
An exploratory study was conducted to present the approach of Brazilian hospital pharmacists to registering, documenting, archiving and disseminating clinical practice. The data were collected using an electronic questionnaire (n=348). In fact, 97.41% of pharmacists record their clinical practice, out of which 64.01% (n=217) do in electronic form, mainly in private hospitals (p<0.000), in the central, southern and southeastern regions (p=0.040), and by professionals with 1-5 years of experience (p=0.001). The main software used is non-specific to clinical practice: an electronic spreadsheet (47.93%; n=104) and text editor (13.37%; n=29). The archiving of records is performed by 87.61% (n=297) of professionals, where 80.13% (n=238) do so in physical...

THE CONTRIBUTION OF NORTH DAKOTA'S COMMUNITY PHARMACIES TO THE STATE'S ECONOMY AgEcon
Hodur, Nancy M.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
A pharmacist shortage, mail and internet competition, thinning margins, and third-party payer issues are some of the issues challenging community pharmacies. Those challenges have raised concerns about the long-term viability of independent community pharmacies, especially those in rural areas. In addition to a pharmacy's role in the delivery of prescription drugs, community pharmacies also play an important role in the state and local economies, again, especially in rural communities. Community pharmacies consistently have been classified as a business that provides essential services. Because of the issues and challenges facing community pharmacies and their role as an essential service, this study was undertaken to quantify the economic contribution...
