The effect of enzymatic hydrolysis on phenolic antioxidant extraction was studied in raspberry solid wastes. This by-product possesses high content of crude fiber (60%) and low values of protein, oil and ash. Raspberry fiber composition suggests that biocatalysts with cellulase, hemicellulase and pectinase activities would be useful for carrying out an enzymatically assisted antioxidant extraction. Hydro-alcoholic extraction was done using different commercial enzymes. Total phenol content and antioxidant activity of enzyme-hydrolyzed residue extracts were measured and compared with those obtained without enzyme application. All biocatalysts evaluated increased soluble solids in comparison to the non-enzymatic control. Among them, Grindamyl and Maxoliva... |

Deschampsia antarctica (DA), the only species in the Gramineae family endemic to the Antarctic territory, is characterized by a combination of high levels of free endogenous phenylpropanoid compounds under normal in situ and in vitro growth conditions. In this article, we describe the design and use of a specific temporary immersion photobioreactor to produce both increased DA biomass and secondary metabolite accumulation by UV-B elicitation during cultivation. Three min-long immersions in an induction medium applied every 4 hrs at 14ºC ± 1 and 20/4 hrs light/darkness photoperiod increased DA biomass production over previous in vitro reports. Biomass duplication was obtained at day 10.7 of culturing, and maximum total phenolics and antioxidant activity... |

Background: Increased popularity of vegetarianism, lactose intolerance, and the high cholesterol content in dairy products, are all factors that have recently increased the demand for nondairy probiotic products. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of refrigeration on the viability of probiotics and asses some of the chemical and sensory characteristics in cornelian cherry juice. Results: The Iranian native probiotic strain (L. casei T4) showed greater viability compared to industrial types (viable count of 8.67 log cfu/mL versus <6.0 log cfu/mL at d 28). However, this most tolerant Iranian strain, could not withstand the conditions of 'Natural juice' at pH 2.6 for more than 7 d. Following a pH adjusted treatment (to pH ~3.5), the... |

ABSTRACT Experiments were carried out to study patterns of artificial defoliation in radish in combination with sulphur (S) fertilization, to evaluate the contribution of younger and older leaves on plant growth and phenolics accumulation in storage roots. Biomass accumulation and partitioning were related to leaf age, magnitude and timing of the clipping treatments. Older leaves increased biomass production and translocation into the storage organ; besides, they induced higher accumulation of phenolic compounds compared to the younger leaves. The highest S fertilization rate (120 kg ha-1) significantly enhanced the polyphenols accumulation, as well as the antiradical activity. The modulation of S inputs in combination with slightly induced stress from... |

Cultivation of salt-tolerant crops help to face to irreversible global salinization of freshwater and soils. In New-Caledonia, three halophytes are candidates for saline crops, Salsola australis R.Br., Suaeda maritima (L.) Dumort and Enchylaena tomentosa R.Br. Their success and quality depend yet on availabilities of salinity and essential nutrients in agrosystems. So, we investigated effects of three salinities, i.e., control moderate and high, and five nitrogen ratios, i.e., 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 or 0:100 NO3−-N:NH4+-N ratio on their growth and functional value for fatty acids and antioxidants. Results show that the leaf fatty acid and antioxidant profiles of species, emphasize their good potential to become functional crop products, based on... |

Within the framework of the multi-disciplinary program Seine Aval, phenolic compounds obtained by CuO oxidation have been studied since 1995. Quantitative analyses have shown a terrestrial contribution in flood, characterized by compounds of the group P (polyols + phenol), S (syringic) and H (hydroxybenzoic). During the low water period, phenolic compounds allow a clear distinction between fluvial and estuarine suspended material. Fluvial run-off contained Syringic, Hydroxybenzoic and Vanillic phenols. In contrast, upstream penetrating marine and estuarine waters are characterized by cinnamic phenols originating from estuarine herbus. In the turbidity maximum zone, aerobic degradation of lignin material increases the (vanillic acid/vanillin) ratio. |

Sargassum muticum, an invasive brown macroalga presently distributed along European Atlantic coasts from southern Portugal to the south coast of Norway, was studied on a large geographical scale for its production of phenolic compounds with potential industrial applications and their chemical and biological activities. S. muticum can produce high biomass in Europe, which could be exploited to supply such compounds. S. muticum was collected in Portugal, Spain, France, Ireland and Norway (three sites/country) to examine the effect of the latitudinal cline and related environmental factors. Assays focused particularly on polyphenols and their activities. Crude acetone–water extracts were purified using solid phase extraction (SPE) and antioxidant and... |

Marine macroalgae represent a valuable natural resource for bioactive phytochemicals with promising applications in therapeutics, although they remain largely under-exploited. In this work, the potential of two marine green macroalgae (Cladophora rupestris and Codium fragile) as a source of bioactive phenolic compounds was explored, and antioxidant, mineralogenic, and osteogenic activities were evaluated. For each species, a crude hydroalcoholic extract (CE) was prepared by solid/liquid extraction and fractionated by liquid/liquid purification into an ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) enriched in phenolic compounds and an aqueous fraction (AF). Antioxidant activity, assessed through radical scavenging activity and reducing power assay, was increased in EAF... |

This study evaluated the effects of five smoking processes on the contents of 10 major phenolic compounds in fillets of herring (Cuplea harengus), namely two traditional processes, involving smoke production by smouldering or friction, one process using liquid smoke atomisation, and two electrostatic smoking processes, also involving smouldering or friction. The effects of several parameters, such as smoking time, smokehouse temperature, electrode voltage, and fish fillet temperature before smoking were assessed for each process. The results indicate that the content of phenolic compounds are strongly affected by the process applied. The percentages of phenolic compounds in fish flesh remained constant and discriminant for a given process, regardless of... |

The relationship between smoking parameters and odour characteristics, evaluated by a trained sensory panel.. were studied on smoked herring. In addition, a possible correlation between the content of 10 phenolic compounds and sensory perceptions was investigated. Five smoking techniques were applied, combining smoke production conditions, performed by pyrolysis of beech wood sawdust or by friction of beech wood log, with smoke deposition, either in a controlled kiln (traditional smoking) or by an electrostatic process. In the fifth smoking technique, a purified condensate of beech smokes was vaporised on fish fillets in the smokehouse. The time of smoking was 3 It for traditional smoking and the liquid smoke atomisation process and 12 min for the... |
