| Exotoxins exert direct deleterious effects on flora and fauna: Some of them damage the cellular membrane, others have inhibiting effects on phytoplanktonic populations susceptible to coming into competition. In terms of pollution, exotoxins are especially a significant menace for aquaculture and although some are also bothersome for Man, we will not treat them here. Endotoxins accumulate in the food chain and reach humans via consumed sea products. They constitute a potential risk for human health and a scourge for the shellfish farming economy. |
